“Worth a look”
Review of Big Ditch Park

Big Ditch Park
Ranked #4 of 20 things to do in Silver City
Attraction details

It's worth 15-20 minutes of your time to check out Big Ditch Park. Firstly to admire the innovation of the town's population - this area could so easily have been left as a dumping ground - and secondly to appreciate the town's history. The ditch is where Main Street stood until it was washed away by a massive flood (you can see photos in the nearby Yankie coffee shop).

The park has a nice shady walk along a 2-3 block stretch and two bridges to Hudson St (Route 90). We found a couple of locals having a chat along the way - and a man asleep on a bench. We did not find the park to be dangerous at all - and saw no evidence of illegal activity. But, like any park, I wouldn't hang out there at night.

A very novel idea to transform massive stream erosion into a park, where one can peacefully spend a pleasant afternoon.

Recent clean up has made "The Ditch" even nicer. Many visitors miss a pleasant stroll along this cool park like feature. The story alone is worth taking a look at this ditch carved by nature after a major flood in the early 20th century. Only one house still stands and faces "The Ditch" which used to be Main St of Silver City. One can even follow the river bed and hike all the way to the golf coarse. As for the homeless, Silver City has a fair share of homeless but I have never seen any in the ditch in the daytime, nor have I been bothered by this population

This thing ripped out Main Street. Now it is a pleasant controlled walkway. If you can manage a flash flood, I would drive a hundred miles.

Homeless live south of town in the ditch area. I would stay away and would not go there. It really is not really safe nor clean. I don't suggest it. There is a new bridge and it is nice to see, but you have to deal with the possibility of undesirables.
