“Beautiful setting, but not a fan of dogs in the kitchen and dining area”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 October 2013

My husband is extremely allergic to dog and cat hair, so when booking our room, I made sure to book a room in the main lodge where, according to the Lodge Policies on their website, dogs are not allowed. Imagine our surprise when we were greeted at the main lodge by a barking Standard Poodle coming out of the dining area. Poodles are known for being allergy friendly, so after advising the owner of the issue, we continued on to our room. The Emery Room was lovely, with a small balcony perfect for two. That afternoon we hiked some of the lodge trails and truly enjoyed the grounds and scenery. The main lodge building looks very comfortable, but we didn't want to take any risks with an allergy attack, so after a dinner in town, spent the remainder of the evening relaxing in our room. At breakfast the next morning, we were shocked to see a small Yorkie type of dog wandering in and out of the kitchen and around the tables as we were served breakfast. I'm thinking Public Health Code issues here... I like dogs, and raised Champion German Shepherds, but dogs have a place, and it is not in the kitchen or dining room of an inn, lodge, or restaurant, unless they are service animals. Thumbs up for the building, grounds, and breakfast; thumbs down on management.

What a great surprise. We only stayed here because our planned hotel closed and this lodge on the outskirts of Silver City is a real gem. Standing alone in huge unspolit grounds the rooms are large and comfortable (a bit dated maybe) and the breakfasts included in the room rate are truely home made.

This lodge was one of the most beautiful, relaxing and clean places I have ever stayed. The room was quiet, spotless and comfortable. The grounds were peaceful and the hosts were gracious and friendly. Being tucked away, where it is located, at night you can see more stars that I have ever seen in my life. I wish I could have spent more time on our road trip but would go back in a minute!

We absolutely loved the Bear Mountain Lodge and wished we could have stayed longer than 2 nights. The O’Keefe room was spacious, clean and comfortable with lovely views across the wooded mountains. From the little balcony you could look down the sweeping drive or observe many birds on the feeders below. The relaxed feel of the place helped us to slow down after a couple of long driving days; it was very tranquil and we immediately felt at ease. The lounge was full of artwork to admire and there was an interesting small library and board games available.

The delicious breakfast was freshly prepared by a lovely young lady and served in the attractive breakfast room (which had hummingbird feeders close by - always a bonus!) There was plenty of food on offer including a different hot course every day.

The grounds of the lodge were beautiful and we would definitely recommend the walking trails. Instead of yet another morning in the car we decided to walk the Old Windmill Trail which included a short side trip to the Lookout Bench and the Bear’s Hump Labyrinth. Although finding the start of the loop beyond the lake, was a little tricky (some extra signage would have helped) we spent a thoroughly enjoyable couple of hours strolling along and found the trail easily navigable.

Even though it was a few miles drive back into town this did not bother us at all, in fact it was lovely to be out in the countryside at night so that we could observe the magnificent stars.

Finally, a special thank you to the super friendly receptionist who helped my husband register our Tracphone when the operator could not understand his English accent!

We would not hesitate to stay here again if we were ever in Silver City again.

We stayed at the lodge for two nights while visiting the Gila Cliff Dwellings and were totally pleased with our stay. We were greeted by Jeff who gave us a complete our of the premises. Jeff also gave us a list of restaurant suggestions that we ultimately used with complete satisfaction.
Our first breakfast consisted of pecan waffles, topped with chunks of poached pears. We also has a dish of fresh fruit and granola with yogurt. Delicious!
The second breakfast also had fresh fruit and granola w/yogurt. The main entree was a delicious quiche.
The room was spacious, very clean with a very large bathroom that included a jacuzzi.
Definitely a return spot and recommendation to others.

Bear Mountain Lodge, an intimate historic inn three miles outside of Silver City, New Mexico, is a gem located on 400 pristine acres. The surrounding area includes several hiking trails that may be pursued on foot or horseback. (Note: no pool or fitness center.) The six large rooms in the main lodge all have private balconies and feature Southwest décor, including art by local artists. Comfortable chairs and couches surround two separate fireplaces in the large public area on the ground floor. The staff is attentive, the atmosphere is relaxed, and free WiFi is available to guests. The rural location in the desert and foothills of nearby mountains means that after dark there's virtually no light pollution, making for wonderful starry views. Getting close to nature in other ways, we could hear coyotes howling at night and observed deer very near the lodge entrance. A highlight of our stay was the hearty, imaginative breakfasts (included in the room rate), which may be enjoyed either in the attractive indoor breakfast area or outdoors on the east-facing patio, where you can observe hummingbirds feeding while you eat. The set breakfast menu changes daily and (during our stay) included blueberry-stuffed French toast and Mexican tortilla--a cross between quiche and omelette--along with bacon, fruit, and trail-mix granola. Though we didn’t dine at the lodge in the evening, meals are also available then and the menu, though a bit pricey, looks appealing.. Reservations must be made a day in advance.

Room Tip: All rooms have balconies. We preferred the greater privacy of one of the four rooms on the second fl...

We stayed one night at this B&B, and we honestly wished we could have stayed longer. This was our 6th night on our week long road trip, and we booked this at the last minute not knowing where we were going. It was my husband, myself and my stepson... and we all enjoyed it immensely! There were other guests. If I hadnt seen them myself, I wouldnt have believed it. Its nice and quiet! The Lodge is set way back, so if you think you've passed it.. you havent. Every room in the house has a great view. The dining area is super nice. We only had one meal there.. stuffed French Toast which was to die for!! You can sit inside or on the outside patio.. which made for a nice meal! The Lobby has a very warm decor, like you've walked into someone's home. The neat thing about this place is there is unique art everywhere!! Not my style.. but super cool. OH, and one of the best parts was the great customer service by the owners. He always would stop and help or talk with us about anything!! We're from Texas, and cant wait to get back. Too bad its a 14 hour drive for us. BUT we'll plan to get back one of these days!!

p.s. if you go into town for dinner. you have got to try Dianes Restaurant! Great decor! Great Food! Great service! cant wait to get back here also!

Room Tip: We stayed in the Leopold Room because it had a pull out sofa for the kiddo! Very Comfy!!
