“Remarkable museum”

The WNMU museum has a wonderful collection of Mimbres pottery which is absolutely stunning and unlike any pottery I have seen. There are many other exhibits of Southwestern topics as well.

“Desperately needs help”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 February 2014 via mobile

The pottery is simply breathtaking. I've looked at pottery in SW museums for decades and have rarely seen this level of quality.
The displays are amateurishly constructed and dirty with frequent misspellings. The prohibition against photography is completely assinine. When I asked why I couldn't take flash-free photographs I received an utterly nonsensical explanation.
I'd like to see this world-class pottery placed in the hands of more professional and enlightened curators.

Thank you for your review! Western New Mexico University Museum is preparing for a $3.3 million renovation of the building and exhibitions thanks to New Mexico voters and Western New Mexico University, our parent institution! The renovation, which begins July 2016, includes adding heating, ventilation, air conditioning, fire suppressions, and new security systems, and installing new, interactive, and engaging exhibitions. At the moment, staff are in the planning stages with our architects and exhibit designers, and writing grants for new innovative and interactive exhibitions. As it becomes available, information information about the renovation, including designs, the location of the temporary museum while Fleming Hall undergoes renovation, and much more will be posted to our website. Plans are to permit visitors to photograph exhibitions and objects for personal use only in the newly renovated Museum.

We will hold a Grand Reopening Celebration when the renovations are complete and we hope that you will join us!

Very nice museum if you like to see pottery which I do. Lots of mimbres pottery. The antiques area is weak, but the pottery is very strong. Wish they would learn to spell (whoever printed up the explanation boards didn't know how to proofread).

“Wonderful!”

This museum is a wonderful step back in time, and a great study of the mimbreno people that lived in the southwest a long time ago.
