We stayed five nights this past week and the location is reasonable to the West entrance to the park. For about the same price, you can get very sub-par accommodations in Glacier Park, so stay at The Great Bear Inn. Yes, it is additional driving, but worth the time. Superb in cleanliness, attention to detail, decorating, engaging and friendly staff. Only suggestion would be to have dinner earlier - 7 PM. Cuisine was excellent.

We recently stayed here for five nights. Had a wonderful time and were made to feel like family. If you stay here, get the dinner package as the son of the owner and his friend are gourmet chefs and we had great meals every night. Breakfast was continental with lots of cereal, bread, and juice choices, plus very good coffee that was always ready early for those of us who wanted a cup of coffee in the early morning.

We would stay here again if we are in the area.

I will echo all the great comments others have made; it's hard to find anything negative about the Great Bear Inn. Susan and her son, Ryan (the cook) are marvelous hosts . . . enthusiastic about people and the services they provide for us. Their rustic, peaceful, lovely lodge is small (8 rooms; 2 cabins) and homey. Dinner was fine dining quality and would easily cost over $100 in any good restaurant. This was a bargain, Ryan. We enjoyed your friendly banter; it put all the guests on a friendly note with each other. Best surprise: 2 large washers and dryers on 2nd floor near our room; even providing detergent and softener for us. Use Susan's directions, not your GPS. We learned this the hard way

Room Tip: We had a nice room overlooking the front of the property, 2nd floor. Didn't see other rooms

We booked a trip to Glacier National Park late in the year. We wanted to stay inside the park, but it was to late to get a room everything was booked up. I came across The Great Bear Inn on Trip Advisor and I am so happy that they had some rooms left for us. I cannot begin to tell you what a beautiful place this is. The location is beautiful, only minutes from the west side of Glacier National Park. Susan the owner and her sister are wonderful . The Inn is beautifully decorated. The beds are so comfortable. The rooms are beautiful. Ryan , the chef made some incredible meals for everyone. Chris and Hobbit were great. Friendly staff, made us all feel at home. We did get to check out some of the lodges within the park while we were in Glacier hiking. I was not impressed at all, I felt like I was in Disney World instead of a lodge in a national park. Way to crowded, lunches we ate were okay, nothing great. Like my husband said while we were in one of the park lodges, "park food is park food no matter how you want to look at it." He was so right ! I would spend the extra money to go The Great Bear Inn any day, then spend it in one of the lodges inside the park. My husband and I have stayed in quite a few bed and breakfast places and lodges, and The Great bear Inn is my favorite . I would recommend staying at The Great bear Inn to all my family and friends and anyone who wants to have a truly wonderful time. We were treated like family. We met some great guests at the Inn and will never forget all the stories and good times we had. Spend the extra money and stay at The Inn. You will not be sorry. The people who run the Inn are amazing , wonderful, gracious, caring and loving people. We will miss all of them ! Gina L

We were torn between staying here or at the McDonald Lake Lodge. The Lake Lodge is in the park and just at the bottom of the Going to the Sun Road. The Lake Lodge has the substantial advantage of being a lot closer to the park's good hiking trails. But when we drove past the Lake Lodge, we were reminded of Disneyland on a busy day. If you like that, fine. We prefer the quiet of the Great Bear Inn. There are 8 rooms and two cabins (we took both cabins for 4 nights). That's it. You're off the main roads -- it's a dirt and gravel road in. The property is gorgeous and (except for the train whistles which are frequent, even during the night) is quiet. Light sleepers note: bring earplugs so the whistles didn't wake you during the night.

After long days of hiking it was a pleasure to have fine meals served to you right there (for the cabins, it's not part of the deal -- you tell them in the morning if you're going to be there for dinner at night). Dinner isn't until 7:30 ish (read 8:00pm), so you don't have to rush back.

The extra cost was well worth it for roughing it during the day and luxury at night.

Room Tip: Both cabins are great. You can't go wrong with either. Only the big cabin has washer dryer.

First off, when Susan tells you to use the directions from MapQuest...she means it. Our GPS was incorrect and once we went back to the directions I'd printed from their site...it took us right there. Very easy to find when you follow those directions. We arrived a little early since we were just not sure how long it would take us to find it. They let us drop off our luggage, we met three of the dogs that day, but never saw them again during our three day stay. I think they stay close to Susan and she was under the weather while we were there, but Ryan, Chris and "the hobbit" took excellent care of everyone there. The room was wonderful, we had our own deck, the shower was really nice, excellent water pressure and hot water never runs out. Our room was on the main floor and it was very convenient. The meals were excellent and if you didn't fancy something they were making, they always replaced it with another excellent choice. The one bad thing is you spend so much time out and about seeing other things you can forget to spend time there, just enjoying the peace and quiet. There are trains near by, but we have trains near our home and they don't bother us. The price is comparable and probably better than some other places since you get the wonderful evening meal. There is a stocked breakfast area...come anytime and enjoy. They also keep a stocked frig with sodas (pop we call if where I'm from) some bottled water and other non alcoholic beverages. Bring your own wine, liquor or whatever if you want other things. And for pete sakes...don't walk on Ryan's tile in the kitchen...the state health department really frowns on that:) We are not B & B people but we did enjoy our time here and recommend it to anyone traveling in this area.

We stayed in one of the private cabins and loved it! The cabin was clean and well furnished and seemed almost brand new. Our kids loved going over to the "big house" to play with the dogs or to play games in the game room. The property is beautiful and very private. We never heard a train or any other noise for that matter. We traveled for 2 weeks in Montana/Wyoming/Denver and this was definately the nicest accomodations of our entire trip.
