The view from the veranda and main deck of Glacier Bay Lodge looked out over Bartlett Cove where on both nights that we stayed there were Humpback whales swimming lazily about three hundred yards from shore. The second night we were there, the bright sun of the summer sky was shining on the still water, and we could hear them blowing in the distance, showing us their flukes, and occasionally it seemed they were waving with a flipper. The sight takes your breath away. The food at the lodge was good and we enjoyed the meals there that we had, and they provided our introduction to the idea that Alaska likes to outdo Texas. The rooms themselves though leave a lot to be desired. We had two double beds, which were in turn not very firm. Made for some uncomfortable sleeping among all the people we talked with. Again, our room was advertised and sold as a “room with a view.” However, there were so many tree and bushes in the way that there was not that much of a view. The lodge was very good about sending someone to help bring our luggage back to the level where the shuttle picked us up. I should have asked them for help in the first place getting our three heavy pieces to our room. Altogether, I would only suggest “room with a view” is not worth the extra money.
