Description: I am the owner of Gustavus Inn. Our restaurant was named "America's Classic 2010" by the James Beard Foundation. Although we are a hotel, I thought we should appear in the Gustavus, Alaska restaurant listings. We serve dinner nightly to our hotel guests and if we have room, a few extras. Our menus rotate during the week depending on guest preferences. There is only one entree, always seafood and garden bounty. Nightly we feature a foraged wild edible on the bar or table. Meat is served only to accommodate house guests by prior order. Since we prepare everything from scratch onsite, we can happily accommodate dietary restriction with advance notice. My suggestion for dining at the Gustavus Inn is to stay here for guaranteed reservations in the dining room.

There a good reason that this place won the James Beard Award a few years back.  This is not your conventional restaurant, but rather a dining experience.  A prix fixe dinner is served at 6:30 pm in the summertime, but arrive around 5:30 to have a beverage, and to share appetizers with other guests.  You will be seated at a communal table, and will share dishes and conversation with guests from afar.  Each night, a different fish or shellfish is the main course, with salad and vegetables harvested from the beautiful garden outside.  Considering the remote Alaska location, this restaurant is an incredible find, and should be experienced if you love food and conversation.

A delicious dinner, but the $50 price tag per person, not including beverages, seemed high for what was served.

From "happy hour" (complete with dried kelp chips and home-made salsa) to the fresh sablefish with ginger sauce, this was a really wonderful meal. Served family-style in assigned tables, we enjoyed the company as much as the food itself. All you can eat, great service. The Inn itself looks wonderful, but passing through for a meal was treat enough.

We were fortunate to be able to dine here while staying at the Blue Heron B&B nearby. The Inn only accepts outside dinner guests if their own rooms are not filled, and apparently it's possible to get bumped from your reservation if they should make a late booking of one of their rooms. But try to eat here if you can, it's divine! Arrive a half hour early for the fun socializing and appetizers, and then be seated family style and get a chance to interact with additional guests. The James Beard Award-nominated chef makes creative use of local ingredients in this multi-course meal. Family style serving ensures that you won't leave hungry. Fresh baked bread rolls and desserts complement the wonderful local seafood. Worth every penny, and pleasantly reasonably priced.

It's no wonder the dining room is practically always full. Dave is keeping the family legacy of fresh, wonderfully prepared food alive and thriving.
