“At Home in Gustavus”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

My husband and I recently returned from a three week Alaskan vacation. We began our trip in southeastern Alaska, and it proved to be some of our favorite days of the trip. It was In large part due to our stay at the Blue Heron Inn. Deb greeted us at the ferry, eager to make us feel at home in Gustavus. After Deb gave us a tour of the community, we checked into the guesthouse. The room was very clean, comfortable, well furnished, and had windows on three sides of the room giving it a very open feeling. I'm sure the cabins are just as nice. Breakfast each morning was definitely a treat- different choices of delicious food each morning. We stayed in many B&Bs throughout Alaska, and this was definitely our best breakfast! Deb worked to set up dinner reservations, a glacier trip out of Glacier Bay National Park, and our whale-watching tour. I'm sure we had the best whale-watching boat! Deb had extras that made a difference in our stay-bikes to ride, warm coats for the boat trips, laundry facilities, and transportation to activities within community. During our stay at the Blue Heron, we slowed our travel pace and really enjoyed just being in Alaska. When time to leave, Deb was out with other guests; therefore, Pete drove us to "meet the jet" for our flight to Anchorage. When in line to board, we heard our names called. It was Deb, who had returned and rushed to the jet to say good-bye and wish us safe travels! Staying at the Blue Heron is truly "At Home in Gustavus"!

If you are planning a stay in Gustavus to explore the Glacier Bay region, look no further than Deb Woodruff's little haven of tranquility. From the initial phone encounter it was clear that she intended to make us feel at home and to share her enthusiasm for the region she cherishes. She spoke to us at length about all the possible activities available and how best to schedule them.
We stayed in the Fireweed cottage which is private and peaceful, complete with a full kitchen if you should desire to cook, which we didn't. She provides so much more than just "bed and breakfast"... the breakfasts were fabulous and so filling that you could easily skip lunch. But she also provided attentive concierge services for our activities, spending an enormous amount of time attempting to set up extra excursions after we arrived, all without any booking fees. She and her staff drove us to and from various activities and really saw to our every need.

Be sure to have her reserve a dinner reservation for you for at least one night at the fabulous Gustavus Inn, and arrive a half hour early for the fun socializing and appetizers. The Inn books up early with their own dinner guests, so plan ahead.

Whatever you do in Gustavus, Blue Heron provides a wonderful home base that truly feels like it's run by Mom.

Start with a stay at the Blue Heron and then plan your Alaskan holiday from here. Deb confirmed not only our room reservations...she checked on flight details, dinner reservations, boat trips, kayaks, bikes, anything that we wanted to do during our stay. She was a welcoming hostess with connections to everyone in the surrounding area. It was a real vacation for the whole family!

Look no further than this wonderful property owned and run by Deb Woodruff and start planning your trip well in advance. In all of my travels I have never been so well attended to. We stayed at the Blue Heron last summer and prior to making the decision where to stay, called and spoke to Deb several times. In the end and because of the vast amount of information she provided to us AND the fact that she would assist in bookings while we stayed there, we increased the amount of time there by a couple of days ... and that was one of the best travel decisions ever! Deb collected us at the airport, provided us with a tour on the way to the Guesthouse and very honestly look care of our every need. After spending five days at the Guesthouse we moved on to explore other areas but it was the time with Deb and in Gustavus that remains a "color memory". Talk to Deb about what type of experience you would like while in this incredible part of Alaska and she will make very appropriate recommendations for you. During your time at the Guesthouse (or in one of the Cabins), you will be treated to very comfortable accommodations and wonderful breakfasts (a common thread with all reviews of this property).

As you sit in the breakfast room, watch for the bear that may make his way through the Fireweed and poke his head up to take a look, sit in the large chairs outside and enjoy the view of the Fairweather range on a clear day. Look up in the pines to the right of the property to spy on the Eagle on her nest. Grab a bike and take a ride around "town". If you go on the tour into Glacier National Park (and I would suggest that you do!), Deb can even assist with a warmer jacket if you need one. Deb even booked a fishing trip for us. Be very specific with her regarding what you are looking for regarding fishing (salmon, halibut or both). There are lots of great Captains and boats in this lovely community (and one very snarly/unpleasant Captain). Tell her what you are looking for and she will match you up with the best Captain and boat. She just does not miss a thing when it comes to taking care of her guests! You will be in good hands with Deb Woodruff and your stay at the Blue Heron Bed and Breakfast and in Gustavus will provide you with wonderful memories!

Room Tip: Talk to Deb about the type of room and what you would like to see and do in the area. That will ass...

The Blue Heron Inn is in an absolutely beautiful location, convenient to anything you would want to do in Gustavus or in Glacier Bay National Park. Deb, the owner, could not have been more accommodating, picking us up from the airport, introducing us to the town and its customs (be sure to wave at passing vehicles!), suggesting and making any arrangements for everything from whale watching to a wildlife kayak trip. Each cabin has its own kitchen, with beautiful touches such as hand built tea pots from a local artist. The breakfasts are delicious and every bit of the service is filled with love and caring. I will go back again and highly recommend it to anyone traveling to that area.

The owner, Deb, was very helpful. She picked us up at the ferry, she organized all our activities, filling our time to the max so we could see and do the most possible in the 2 full days we spent there. We took the glacier cruise, did the whale watching cruise, and kayaking with whales and porpoises in the water. It was very exciting! She has bicycles you can use to ride around the area. Deb was friendly and made delicious breakfasts.

Staying at Deb's wonderful place with our extended family of three couples was very enjoyable. Quiet peacefulness with view of a nesting pair of eagles out of each of the cabins and rooms was a treat! Everyone there was so knowledgable about the history, flora and fauna of Glacier Bay National Park and Gustavus. We loved all the bikes and helmets available to cruise around. The breakfasts were over-the-top in homemade freshness and variety! We loved the fresh farm eggs!
Deb helped arrange everything, boat cruise with Park Service in Glacier Bay, car rental, whale-watching boat trip, even had extra warm coats for use on the boats!
We had an excellent stay here. Everything was clean, bright, and cheerful.

Room Tip: Get your reservation in early! The two separate cabins are efficient and adorable and have kitchene...
