“Our Fourth Visit!”
Reviewed 31 July 2012

An amazing fourth year here. We decided to stay in a two-story Lodge Unit this year, as we had a group of five of us. We were very pleased with the roominess of these units. The cabins are awesome, but we wanted to try something different in a two-floor arrangement this year with two teenagers and a pre-schooler. As always, immaculate upon our arrival. Beautiful modern kitchen, new appliances, shiny glasses and plenty of cookware. Three bedroom, two full bathrooms, upstairs deck and downstairs deck. There are four lodge units together, but we never were bothered by any noise from the other units, but this resort is a place many people come to because of the quiet and peacefulness of it all. The view was out of this world from our unit. The deck was perfect for having that glass of Gunflint Red Wine in the evenings after a day of playing in the kayaks and canoes in the water. There is a wooded path that guides you downhill to your own dock. A short stroll in the opposite direction brings you to a sandy beach for swimming and sandcastles.

The children enjoyed being in close proximity to the main lodge (down the hall) to quickly join in the daily naturalist activities. You can plan a full day here or a lazy day. A day on the water, or a day reading or participating in the relaxing daily activities for children and adults alike. You can make it what you want in this serene environment.

I think I said this in a previous review of this resort, but to me this location is a "feeling", it's emotional...I don't think it would ever matter which unit or cabin you stay in, you will always "feel" this special place in your heart. It's a "must stay".

Room Tip: We have stayed in Cabin 8, Great, close to beach, Cabin 6 is a short walk down a lovely level lake p...

Bearskin lodge is FANTASTIC! Our cabin was super super clean, decorated very nicely, beds were very comfortable, & even the shower was awesome. Our own full kitchen with dining had everything imaginable - even cookie sheets and the private dock was icing on the cake! My son and I went up there to try and see a moose and we got to watch a moose for over 45 minutes! Me the Mom of our family, with my son, I felt very safe with no worries at Bearskin lodge! We hiked many of the trails usually 3 times a day, right on the bearskin property and enjoyed seeing the wildlife. The Bearskin sauna & hot tub afterwards was a fun treat! If you want a nice clean updated cabin with everything you need and friendly staff - stay at the Bearskin Lodge!

Room Tip: We liked Cabin 8, it was super clean and nice to be close to the lodge/hot tub/sauna.

My boyfriend and I (23 and 25 yrs) stayed at Bearskin Lodge for 4 nights in February. In the 8 years we have dated, this was one of out favorite trips (and we have been a lot of places). Some of our best memories happened here - cross country skiing, seeing wildlife and a couple moose, feeding the birds, hot tubing, dog sledding, snowshoeing, cooking and hanging out in our little perfect cabin. There is a never ending list of things to do here and the best part is, your in the middle of the forest and nobody can bother you. The staff here are also excellent. There was a really bad blizzard heading our way the day we were suppose to leave. The staff was worried about us driving back in our Honda Civic, so they offered us a free night stay (unfortunately we had to both go back to work in the morning, so had to pass). When we got our car completely stuck, they were more than happy to pull us (they also probably enjoyed a good laugh afterward). Thank you so much for such a great time, we will without a doubt be back!!

We were worried when there was still no snow in Grand Marais, but just over the ridge on the Gunflint Trail, it was plentiful. We woke up the first morning to 0 degrees, bright sun, and 77 km of groomed cross country ski trails to explore. What a beautiful winter wonderland it was after this brown quasi-winter! We had a cozy cabin with everything needed for cooking our meals. I loved the antlers and moose art on the walls. Also loved having our own bird feeder to watch. We dined in the lodge on Valentine's night, and the food was very good. Thanks to the owners and staff there for a relaxing winter getaway. The best part was seeing two moose on the Gunflint Trail on our way out. Yippee! My first Minnesota moose!

My husband and I had such a great time at Bearskin Lodge over Thanksgiving week. It's a great place to get away and relax in the cabin or make the most of the beautiful woods around the area. The fresh bread on arrival was a delicious surprise and the pies they offer are fantastic!! There are lots of trails to hike/snowshoe to work off the pie. Every cabin overlooks the beautiful lake and has its own dock which would be great for a summer visit. We can't wait to visit again!

Room Tip: We were the only ones there for a few days so they let us check out the other cabins. All are nice b...

This was our 15th year of vacationing at Bearskin Lodge, and it seems to get better every year. We vacationed there for a week in February, and no matter how much or how little snow the rest of Minnesota receives, there is always plenty at Bearskin, partly because of the elevation. The trails are expertly groomed, with a wonderful variety ranging from easy to very challenging. For variety, there is a snowshoe trail, an ice rink for skating or broomball, and dogsled rides with a musher who lives in a tipi on the lake in the winter. Of special note this year were the two meals we had at the lodge. Both were terrific, and a very good value. Compliments to both of the chefs. We had enough leftovers from Pasta Night on Tuesday to have another meal later in the week. Over the years, we have stayed in the Lodge, and in a number of the cabins, and every unit is warm and comfortable, with a well-outfitted kitchen for meal prep. We love relaxing in front of the fireplace in our cabin in the evening, but have to say that one of our favorite parts of a trip to Bearskin Lodge is the daily trip to the Hot Tub Hus. Each cabin or lodge unit reserves their own private time, so you can relax those muscles after an energetic day of skiing. The owners Bob and Sue McCloughan and their staff are very friendly and welcoming. It's a perfect winter get-away.

I visited Bearskin Lodge in late January 2012, and in this seemingly snowless winter, there was great snow up the Gunflint Trail, and the Bearskin cross-country ski trails were the beautiful well-groomed wonderland I had experienced in the past. Our cabin was cozy, comfortable, and had everything we needed for our week-long visit. We looked out on a beautiful snow-covered landscape at the frozen lake. You have the feeling of a secluded area, though there was cut firewood right outside the door. I love the solitude and quiet of nature, skiing the trails, and watching birds outside the window coming to the feeder, but I much enjoy creature comforts of a great cabin, and Bearskin offers all of that. We love it there.

Room Tip: All of the locations are great, and there is a wide variety of options. You should pick your cabin...
