You don't get to the lodge by accident - it is way up there near the border with Canada but worth the trip. Rooms a little small but appear to be recently renovated, and very clean. open the windows and hear the surf of Lake Superior. The dining room is a showpiece - like a miniature version of the ballroom in the movie The Shining. Food a little expensive, creative, not perfectly executed but enjoyable anyway. Tip - order at least one of the cinnamon buns for your table in addition to your normal fare at breakfast. It is the size of a hubcap and really good. The beach is wonderful - wander and listen and smell, then find your special agate - there are thousands of them so at least a few are sure to please. Tip - go to the right a few hundred yards and see the Brule river flow into Lake Superior. At night, see the beautiful stars over the dark lake. don't miss sunrise over the lake and shore. We went in fall and will always treasure our time at the lodge.

Room Tip: rooms toward the end of the building have a better view of the shore but all rooms seem to have a go...

I have probably stayed at Naniboujou at least 5 times in the past 15 years - even though I live far from Minnesota. There is an ambience to this Lodge that keeps drawing me back - even though the rooms are just barely adequate - small, a bit stark, and lacking any sense of luxury - think bare bones accommodation.

However, the public rooms are quite another thing. The dining room walls and ceiling are painted with Cree designs in the most brilliant warm colors, with the spirit Naniboujou presiding over all. It is simply breathtaking. There is also an inviting sunroom, magnificent views of Lake Superior, and some very good food served in that awesome dining room. Unfortunately - for those of us who like a glass of wine with dinner, the dining room is alcohol free, although you may imbibe privately in your room. The Sunday brunch is particularly appealing - wild rice sausages, bacon, bread pudding, eggs, sweeet smoked salmon, malted waffles w/ orange sauce, and the list goes on. Really wonderful.

From here, it is just a short walk across the road to access the Lake Superior Hiking Trail - including Devil's Kettle which is a magnificent waterfall associated with the spirit Naniboujou.

After a beautiful drive up the coast of Minnesota, we stayed at Naniboujou Lodge. We loved this place. It is very quiet and relaxing - no phones or tvs. The rooms are very clean and decorated very nice. The rooms are on the small side, again this lodge was built in the 1920's, but we are fine with a small room. The front desk staff is very friendly and helpful. The grounds are very nice and the view of Lake Superior is very beautiful. We ate dinner in the lodge dining room. The dining room is very very beautiful. The food is a bit pricey, but very good. We would not hesitate to return to Naniboujou Lodge.

A group of us women [around 20+] from our walking/kayaking(spring)/snowshoeing{winter} group made reservations for a short outing to Lake Superior and a couple of overnights at Naniboujou Lodge. The dining area is beautiful and the breakfasts were good. We gathered in the sitting area after supper & enjoyed each others company after dark. We had a bond fire one night pre-arranged by the lodge & we kept warm by the fire although the weather didn't quite cooperate. It was windy & cool - we just needed to face the right direction. No liquor license, so therefore no wine etc with dinner, but we didn't miss it.
The rooms were varied according to how many people wanted roomieThs. A few had their own fireplace & some had Murphy beds. Each room was quite adequate for our needs. There is a deck between two sets of rooms on the second floor so we were able to gather outside one early afternoon or evening if we wanted to be outside & not be on the beach.

Room Tip: Corner suites have the fireplaces. Cozy & quieter. Plus they appeared to have more room. Of cour...

My husband and I spent one night here and wished it could have been more! Built in 1929, the lodge is filled with character inside and out! Diane was wonderful and informative as she checked us in. Our room was small but comfortable with a lovely wood burning fireplace ready to be lit! Its just steps to the shore of Lake Superior. They had a firepit on the beach all set for the evening along with s'more packages available at the front desk. The restaurant and its colorfully painted Cree Indian wall designs is amazing to look at and enjoy! The food in the restaurant was excellent as we ate both dinner and breakfast in the dining room! Simple, relaxing and very enjoyable! Can't wait to go back!!

Room Tip: We were on the back side of the lodge with a view of the lawn. Very quiet location!!

Some twenty minutes north of Grand Marais you will come across Naniboujou Lodge. It has been there for at least eighty years. Built to be a private club it was linked with Al Capone and Babe Ruth. The highlight is the colorfully painted and decorated dining hall and its oversized stone fireplace. We spent two nights at the lodge and enjoyed the food, the Superior shoreline, and closeness to state parks and other nature adventures.

I like expresso and lattes, but found the French press coffee at the lodge to be a very good substitute.

Natashas is a store that sells souvenirs and the like and is nearby. We found a nice rug for $9
and were informed about what was good to visit in the area including the fort at Grand Portage.

We would stay there again as the room rates were reasonable and we found plenty of things to do in the area.

Room Tip: Rooms have no phones of televisions. You are going back in time. Consider enjoying doing other thi...

The special place is not to be missed if you are looking for a quiet place to unwind. The lodge was built in 1929 and has lots of atmosphere. It is steps from Lake Superior and the chairs at the beach welcome you to relax. No phones, tv, or wi-fi, but you don't need them. The restaurant serves the highest quality meals with excellent service. The rooms are smaller than the newer hotels, but you are not in your room except to sleep. We will be back soon.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a lake view.
