“Amazing weekend at the Gunflint!”
Reviewed 14 February 2012

We booked a deal on Crowd Cut for our weekend at the Gunflint Lodge and we could not have been happier with our stay. We were in a Classic Cabin, which was fantastic! We were thrilled to arrive and discover that we had a beautiful wood-burning fireplace stocked with all the wood and fire starters we could possibly need. There was also a kitchenette complete with dishes, silverware, utensils, wine glasses, microwave, fridge, and corkscrew. The bathroom was an open style bathroom combined with our only bedroom and we loved this. The shower was amazing with a showerhead and 4 massaging shower jets. Everything was clean and well decorated. We also had an awesome view of the lake and the night sky. In the morning we would frequently wake up and there would be deer right outside our living room window. Of everything in our cabin, we definitely enjoyed the fireplace the most! I think the only time we didn't have a fire going in our cabin was when we were sleeping!

Daytime activities are plentiful at the Gunflint. Our first day we snowshoed up to the High Cliffs for a pretty amazing view (dress warm!) and we made dream catchers in the naturalist center. Our second day we spent a few hours nordic skiing- a wonderful experience and great workout.

While there is a charcoal grill outside of most cabins they are open style grills you see at your local city park, so don't plan on grilling much in the winter. It is just too cold and windy off of the lake, I imagine in the summer it's an excellent feature though. We ate at the Bistro a couple times and Justine's for dinner once and breakfast once (our last breakfast was included in our room rate). Justine's was delicious- there was a TON of food between salad, entree, and dessert. My husband and I decided to split our meal there and the wait staff was great about this. It enabled us to enjoy our meal and get full without being completely stuffed! As everyone says you must try the Walleye Chowder!

Overall our visit to the Gunflint Lodge was exactly what we had hoped it would be and more. We cannot wait to go back!!!

Room Tip: Classic cabins are more than adequate for a romantic weekend if you cannot afford to upgrade to a ro...

Haven't stayed at the lodge yet, but looking forward to. There are sauna's in the rooms that are for 4 plus guests. did have lunch in January 2012, and not one to have fried foods, I did indulge in the fried ( I use this term loosely ) polluck, the fish and chips plate. Lightly breaded, I think using panko (?) so, so delicious. The "chips" english for french fries, was as good, nothing greasy, just juicy deliciousness. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a wonderful, lunch. I wish I lived closer, I would definitely be a regular! The view was spectacular, Canada is on the other side of the lake, and deer, wild deer come right up to you for a handful of corn kernnels! Now that was worth the visit - having wild deer come up to the window so you can get a birds eye view of these lovely creatures.

If you want a couple of days or a week, this is the place to go. We have only been there in the winter months, once in March and the last one this December, but we have no doubt that it is great no matter what the weather. Secluded, comfortable, great scenery, wonderful skiing and hiking and even dog sled rides. Also, pet friendly! We had one of the romantic cabins and it was fantastic. Fed and watched the pine grosbeaks, chickadees, blue jays, gray jays, red squirrels and deer. The huge windows were great for bird watching. Didn't have enough snow to ski this last time we went, but were able to hike most trails and worked up quite an appetite. The lodge has great food...have only had lunch and appetizers so far, but heard the breakfasts were very hearty and good too. Very good naturalist program also. We went on an animal footprint hike through the woods and learned lots of interesting, historical facts about the area. The staff was very helpful and friendly and took care of all of our needs. It takes a little bit to get there, but well worth the trip. Can't wait to go back!

Room Tip: Romantic cabins have complete kitchens and a whirlpool tub, if you don't need the whirlpool tub...

They definitely take care of you here! Gunflint trail area is one of the most beautiful areas of the country, summer or winter. The lodge has a lot of amazing history to it. Stayed in the winter and classic skied most of their own trails during the day. They have plenty of trail so you can get a few unique rides in right out of your cabin - they even fixed us bag lunches. Plus they have shelters and the trails are well-marked. The lodge is a great spot to grab a beer and the food is all very good. Had a lot of fun with the bartender and staff. Saw and heard timber wolves a few times over the few days we were there too! And obviously there is plenty of deer around. The cabins are more than comfortable. Hot tub, sauna, comfy living room with fireplace, it was one of the best weeks of the year for us!

Another wonderful experience at Gunflint Lodge! The cabin was immaculate, huge and so comfortable! The dining experience as always was delicious and first rate. And, of course, the service is what sets this place apart! From the front desk to the dining room to housekeeping, everyone went out of their way to make sure we had a wonderful time! Thank you, Gunflint!

Cabins are great, food and service outstanding! We have been here several times in both summer and winter. Summer is a fantastic time to stay here . Hiking at Gunflint Lodge is great and the staff is ready to provide tips to other great trails on the Gunflint trail. Explore the BWCA with a canoe provided by the lodge and see waterfalls and lakes and an abundance of wildlife, Winter is wonderful at Gunflint lodge with the deer right outside your cabin window, step outside and feed them. Cross country skiing is awesome. Beautiful to walk out on the frozen lake to see the sky so full of stars ..maybe even the northern lights- with the snow twinkling in the starlight. The staff at the lodge is one of the best I've ever encountered, friendly, knowledgeable and very helpful. The food is beyond expectation, want to have a romantic dinner in the cabin? They deliver!! Planning my next stay soon, after all it's winter again. You'll be so glad you found Gunflint Lodge!

I would definitely recommend Gunflint. We had a great weekend enjoying the fresh air and quiet. Lots of activities to participate in although I would want to come back in the summer so we could canoe and enjoy the water more.

The on site restaurants are very good and had excellent service. In hindsight I would have brought more snack food for the cabin b/c aside from the restaurants there are no other dining options.

Overall it was well worth the trip up and would go again.
