You've found your Gunflint location. John and Rose are fabulous hosts. Right on the lake and peaceful as you can imagine. They have canoes, kayaks, boats, plenty of wildlife to feed, etc. John fixes breakfast for guests and you simply can't beat it. Beautiful newly remodeled cabins with updated kitchens and baths. Make this place your destination as we had a great time.

Once more, we had an amazing stay. The renovations they've made to the lodge are outdone by the hospitality shown to each and every guest that shows up at their doorstep. They have a sign in front of the lodge that says, "Sorry, we're open". Believe me, you will only be sorry if they are closed. Beautiful hosts, beautiful views, great breakfasts and great fishing. What more could you ask for when vacationing. Oh, maybe a peanut butter filled pretzel if you're Jazmine the dog! We already have our reservations made for next year.

Another week at the CR Lodge with John & Rose. We've died and went to heaven... again!! The memories get better and better with each stay. I can't say enough about the way that John and "Dear Sweet Rose" run their business. Clean accommodations, excellent customer service, all at a great value. From the minute you arrive, to the painful time you have to say goodbye, you know you've made the right choice for a vacation. If you didn't bring it, and John or Rose can't get it, you don't need it. We always meet so many nice people during our stays, and it is really hard to leave. One thing to watch for is a wayward pickle with your breakfast. The chef can be somewhat creative with his culinary skills:-). Contrary to what some might say, there are a few fish in the lake, however fishing is always secondary to the atmosphere and the experience of being a guest at the Cross River Lodge.

My husband and I spent an unforgettable getaway, for the first time ever, on the Gunflint Trail at the Cross River Lodge. We had an incredible visit. The Lodge was clean and beautifully decorated and fairly priced. Our room above the lodge (Chippewa) was well stocked with cooking utensils (we did our own cooking in the kitchenette unit - except for breakfast) and featured a fantastic view of Gunflint Lake. John and Rose are the best hosts - ever!! They were super friendly and gracious! The breakfasts were something special and something we looked forward to every morning. The property is small compared to other resorts/lodges on the Trail but this really allows you the opportunity to get to know some of the other guests at the Lodge on a more personal level. They do no advertising because they don't have to...the recommendation of their guests is the best advertising money can buy!! We will definitely be back because we already booked our reservation for next year!
If you like resorts with water parks, spas, horseback riding, swimming pools and mini golf, this is not the place for you. If you like impromptu sunset pontoon boat rides, a personal guided boat ride and hike to a beautiful waterfall, personal recommendations about the best hikes to take and enjoy, and a place where you are treated like family, then I would HIGHLY recommend the Cross River Lodge.

Cross River Lodge is a breath of fresh air . If choosing a resort off the Gunflint Trail, I highly recommend this hidden gem. The Owners John and Rose are very personable and treat you like family. They are very accommodating and if there is anything that you may need they are always at your service.
Accommodations: We stayed in the Angler room above the lodge. They have 3 rooms you can choose from at the lodge; the other choices are cabins on the property. The rooms have all been updated and are very comfortable. The best feature of the room is that it opens up to a deck facing the beautiful Gunflint Lake. The Angler room includes a small love seat, Queen size bed, Microwave, Refrigerator, and a coffee maker. They have complimentary hot chocolate, popcorn and coffee packets in the room along with salt, pepper, sugar and creamer. They do have an alarm clock with radio as well. There is no TV in the rooms, however you can just walk downstairs to the lodge and watch anything you would like on the big screen TV. Internet is available, but is a bit slow and you’re unable to upload or download. It is perfect for checking emails or browsing the web on a rainy day. There is also no cell service. There are no plates in the Angler room, but they do have cups, coffee mugs and wine glasses. Dish towel, dish soap, paper towels and even a back scratcher also found in the kitchen (they think of everything  )! Another added bonus is that they have complimentary soap, shampoo, hair dryer, feminine hygiene products and air freshener.
Breakfast: Breakfast is included in your stay and it is wonderful. John will cook you up what you would like to eat whether it be an omelet, sausage, bacon or French Toast he can make it for you. Aside from John’s amazing cooking they provide cereal, fruit, oatmeal, cinnamon rolls, toast and whatever else you may desire. They have a small refrigerator that is stocked with milk, orange juice, V 8 juice, yogurt, chocolate milk, pudding and fruit cups. Throughout the day there is usually chocolate chip cookies for the taking as well!
Lodge: The lodge has a nice sitting area along with board games, novels and a limited selection of DVD’s if you want to watch on your computer. They also have local area books on trails, history, the flora and fauna of the area, maps that provide locations of hiking trails as well as information on canoe and kayaking. They have a list of brochures for things to do in the area and places to eat. There are limited areas to eat in the Gunflint area, but they do provide a list of places that provide meals. They do not sell any liquor or bait here so you will need to pick that up prior heading to the lodge. Prices are expensive on the Gunflint. A five dollar burger will cost you 10. The local ma and pa shops will charge you roughly 4 dollars for a bag of chips and $7.75 for 2 cups of packaged shredded cheese!!! So just be advised to get your food supplies before heading up from Grand Marais. They do sell Ice here for coolers, but John is very nice and will often provide it for free. They have both gas and charcoal grills. They have an outside fire pit and another fire pit that is screened in to keep the bugs out. Kayaks and canoes are complimentary. You can also rent boats for the lake. There is a bridge right down the road that is a excellent fishing spot. There is a bait shop about 15 miles up the road if you need to stock up on Minnows, leeches and such.
Tips: Mosquitoes, ticks and deer flies like humans! I recommend 100% deet. Whatever you decide make sure to bring some bug repellent and check your body often for ticks. I recommend those that are prone to seasonal allergies bring some Zyrtec, Claritin or whatever works for you. The pollen count is very high this year. You can even see it coated on your vehicles. Eye drops are also helpful . The best time to spot moose are early mornings around 5 am and at dusk. We spotted a moose about 5 miles down the road from the Trail center Restaurant heading towards Cross river Lodge on the left hand side in a swampy marsh right by junction 92. We saw it two different times and it was the same one secondary to specific markings on its body. Thinking it must live around there?? Don’t know for sure, but it was nice to get some pics.

My husband and I were so impressed with Cross River Lodge last summer, my siblings decided they wanted to go this year. Once again, FANTASTIC!! Some of us stayed in the Jack Pine cabin (4 bedrooms), plus other family members stayed in the Angler and Cross River Lodge rooms. All of the accommodations were great! John & Rose are very special people who know how to make everyone feel comfortable.

If you're on the fence about where to stay in the area, you won't go wrong if you choose Cross River Lodge!

Room Tip: If you're traveling as a couple, I would highly recommend the Cross River Lodge suite. They con...

If this place was booked for the week we wanted to take our next vacation, we would change our dates. There's no way we could possibly stay anywhere else. Many lodges call their customers "guests", but at this place, we really felt it. John and Rose love this place. I felt it in every detail. Our cabin AND the lodge were inviting in every way. There was no place, though, where the love was more evident than at breakfast. We had a wonderful week. We're already looking at the calendar for when we can return.
