“Clean and Pleasant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2013

We come to Grand Marais often and have our favourite hotel to say, but for this short overnighter, we decided to stay here. We often come to the restaurant: The Pie place which we love for their great breakfasts. The hotel is built in the old style with individual street entry on the ground floor where our room was. Room 12 was nice and recently updated. I love the blue bathroom wall tile. The room was clean and had all we needed with a mini fridge, powder room area and separate bathroom with tub/shower. The TV was a nice newer flat screen wall mounted with lots of channels. There was a router right in our room, so the free internet had a strong signal. Heat is radiated and the room was comfortably warm during this damp chilly night.
Included in your stay is a half price breakfast at the Pie Place. Try the blueberry pancakes, they are excellent!
Autumn time of year is fairly quiet on the street. We could hear people talking outside on the sidewalk if they were a bit loud. This might be a problem during busier times, so if that bothers anyone, they should get an upper floor room. There are nice individual mini patios outside each unit with a table and chairs for enjoying summer evenings. They also have a ceiling fan which I prefer over a/c during warm weather. The staff here is also friendly and helpful. Overall a good stay.

When I started trying to find a place to stay in Grand Marais I was discouraged by all of the high prices and almost gave up. Then I found the Harbor Inn. The price was very reasonable for the area and I must admit I was a little skeptical, but it turned out to be everything we could have wanted - and we are experienced travelers.

The first thing I noticed when we arrived were the lovely flowers they had planted. It's an excellent location across from the lake with a nice little balcony area. Our room was not large, but was very clean and cute with a blue and white nautical theme. The bed was comfortable and there was a sofa and wicker chair seating area. From the second floor, the views from the window and glass door made it seem even larger.

The reception desk is in the restaurant and the host was always friendly and helpful. Breakfast was downstairs and it was buy one get one free for guests. The food was very good and we ate almost every meal there.

We stayed for two nights and it's really a cute little town. It's definitely a tourist place, but it had interesting and fun shops to explore. The hotel was conveniently located for just walking around the town. We really enjoyed our stay and would recommend both the town, the hotel and the restaurant.

Room Tip: The view from upstairs on the lake side is very nice.

We stayed Oct 1 & 2. Rate $125. The room was not clean. The air was stale. The sheets and pillows smelled. Mold around the rim of the bathtub. Drapes didn't close. Outdoor carpeting on the balcony ripped and torn. We needed to leave after one night due to a family situation. Jeremy the manager was not in and would have to call me, after we checked out, to determine if he would refund. With no refund guarantee we stayed. We were told that unless the room could be rented it would be doubtful our money would be refunded. The view from the balcony was awesome but it wasn't worth feeling nasty when you slept in the bed. We spent as little time as possible in the room. Don't stay here!

We checked in (cost about $170 for a weekday) and immediately realized this place wasn`t as great as their webpage indicated. When we arrived we had to wait for the cook in the kitchen to check us in. On the way to our room we had to pass through a dark concrete rear passage which was dungeon like. We immediately went back down to the check-in desk to tell the cook that we didn`t desire to stay there. The cook said there was nothing he could do as we were stuck with our reservation. I asked to talk to the manager and he indicated that he was not available. I asked if he could contact his manager via cell phone and he said no. The first thing we noticed was that the room smelled funny. The heat registers located at the base of the wall were missing the protective guards exposing sharp metal, which was of great concern since we have a toddler. One of the lamp shades was broken and there was a weird hole in the shower wall which was covered by a small piece of plywood. When I asked where the ice machine was, I was pointed in the direction of a dorm size fridge where the ice was supposed to be....it was empty! Oh, and this place in not located on the shore as their webpage indicates. It's located on a busy street and the street is located next to the shore. The web photos make it look like it`s on the water. What was most precious about our stay was when my son and I were in the parking lot behind the motel and the cook (I think the one that checked us in) locked some of his co-workers in the exterior walk in freezer. I guess between cooking and checking guests in he has time to goof off.... maybe he should have made some ice!

We stayed at the Harbor Inn the end of July. The view from our front door was amazing! You could not get any closer to the harbor. The room was showing a little age, but it was clean and comfortable. I would stay there again, just for the location and view.

We pulled into Grand Marais looking for something sweet to eat. Had planned on just ordering Pie. We all realized we were a bit hungry after a long drive from the cities. Still had another 32 miles to go to get to the cabin. But all ordered dinner, and took the Pie to go. The Walleye was wonderful. The service was great, and best of all was The Banana Cream PIe.

When we checked in, we were happy with the location, although parking can be a challenge. Our room wasn't clean, and we had to ask them to clean out the fridge. Little things, like BOTH lights in the room had bulbs in them, but neither turned on. No outlets! Had to move a dresser to charge the phones. The hallways are cement and prison like. BUT - put this all aside, and enjoy the Harbor Views, and walk to almost everything. The food in the restaurant was good, and half price while staying. If you don't mind the outdoor music playing a block away, you will love this place.

Room Tip: I might insist on a Harbor View room (as opposed to the Town View).
