Our family enjoys tent camping, but there are few options near Gatlinburg outside of the National Forest. Most everything in the vicinity is much too commercial for our tastes. The Smoky Bear Campground offers the perfect happy medium between the primitive National Forest sites and the flashing neon RV villages. We love to stay in site 8, since it is big enough for our two large tents. It is bordered by a forest and field, so it feels a bit more secluded than the rest. There are only about 50 possible sites, so there are fewer people at Smoky Bear at any given time than at most other local campgrounds. Whenever we've stayed, the guests (and their yappy dogs) have all been quiet and respectful. The grounds are kept clean, with quaint landscaping. As other reviewers have mentioned, the bathrooms are indeed immaculate. I've never found as much as a stray hair anywhere inside. The owners are super friendly and offer good tips about local restaurants, attractions, and hikes.
