We have been staying at the Edgewater for years and years. We have always had a wonderful stay. The view from the creek side is fantastic. You can see the town and the mountains in the background. The staff is always friendly and the rooms clean. It is an easy walk to town. We plan to stay again in the years to come.

Room tip: Ask for creek side

The Edgewater is one of the most conveniently located hotels in Gatlinburg, close to the aquarium, skylift, Space Needle, the Village shops, and restaurants. It's on River Road, which runs parallel to Parkway, the main strip. If you're lucky enough to have an odd-numbered room facing the town, you'll have one of the best possible views of Gatlinburg and the creek that runs in front of the hotel; if not, you'll be looking at the vertical mountainside within stone's throw, pool, and parking lot.

As a rule of thumb when staying in or around Gatlinburg, there is a trade off when selecting lodging. You can stay in town within walking distance of the main strip and not have to worry about parking, but the hotels on the whole have a 1970s-80s motor lodge feel to them and could use some renovation; or you can stay further from the main strip or Pigeon Forge in a somewhat more modern and cleaner hotel at the same price point. I think the Edgewater fairs better in this trade off than most hotels in Gatlinburg, and the 4 star rating is in comparison to other hotels in Gatlinburg; if compared to hotels in general, it would be 3 stars.

When you arrive, one of the first things you'll notice are the two, slow elevators serving the ~100 guest rooms... or rather, you'll notice their absence during your long wait for them. The elevators are not "smart"; that is, there doesn't appear to be a control circuit to help the elevators cooperate efficiently. You can stand in the lobby and watch both elevators go to the same floor when someone presses the call button. We stayed during the July 4th weekend when the hotel was at full capacity, and there was almost always a line for the elevators in the lobby. During checkin and checkout times, the masses of luggage and people reminded me of the security checkpoint at a busy airport. Use the fire escapes if you're able... it can be a long climb from the parking levels under the hotel to the 8th floor. Speaking of parking, don't drive there in your Excursion or Hummer if it's busy during your stay - even the "van only" parking spots on the lower level will be too small.

The bathrooms are clean. Room and hallway cleanliness is fair. Rooms include a flat screen TV, refrigerator, microwave, and small coffee maker. The mattresses and box springs are in waterproof mattress protectors; while this doesn't guarantee a bed bug-free room, it certainly helps. Our party was in two rooms, one facing the town on the 7th floor, one facing the mountain on the 8th. The rooms are non-smoking, but both retained a hint of the bygone smoking room era, especially the room on the 8th floor. The mountainside-facing room didn't get much daylight and felt dark. The town-facing room was brighter and had a gas fireplace.

The pool is nice for the area. It is an indoor-outdoor pool separated by a glass pane and partition that is open in summer so you can swim from one side to the other. The indoor pool has a rock and waterfall feature. There isn't much shallow water, so small children need floaters or know how to swim.

Complimentary breakfast is served until 10am. Scrambled eggs are available some days, not all. Consistent offerings include sausage patties, gravy, biscuits, cereal (corn flakes, frosted flakes), oatmeal, hard-boiled eggs, toast, donut balls, fruit cocktail from a can, bananas (I think), milk, orange and apple juice, and coffee.

If you prefer to stay inside Gatlinburg, the Edgewater is one of the better hotels at its price point. Definitely consider it, it's not a "dive," but be aware hotels in the core of the town have a tendency to feel dated, and the Edgewater is no exception to this.

2nd time we have stayed here. We will continue to stay here!!! Room 839 with river/town balcony view clean/decent. Staff extremely kind (front desk, room needs, etc). Parking deck under hotel (2levels). Older hotel with character. Never had problems with foul room odors. BUT if we ever felt offended by a room, I have no doubt in my mind Edgewater staff would be accommodating AND with a kind heart. We enjoy our stays.

Enjoyed staying here. Elevators were a little slow, but we were on vacation so no worries. Great location close to the center of the Gatlinburg strip. Parking garage was not that bad, especially compared to many in large cities. Breakfast was good each day, but only had eggs one of the three days. Had a jacuzzi room which was nice w/fireplace. Would go back.
