“Best accommodation in Tanzania”
Reviewed 12 July 2013

What a wonderful time I had! The camp is indeed in the middle of nowhere, (a sign on the main road would be helpful) but that is a huge positive in my view as you will be feeling part of nature. The place is run by a village cooperative and you do have a feeling that by staying there you are actually helping these people to be better off. The nearby national park has no fences so the animals do visit the surrounding areas but again, that is a positive to me. Also, there are maasai guards on the premises who look after each guest so it is a safe bet to stay here. The staff in general is very kind and helpful, the quality of food is of a very high standard. Even though this is a camp and a generator provides electricity between 6 and 10 PM the tents are clean and comfortable and you quickly realize that you do not need 24 hr electricity and a spa and fitness center where you stay to feel good. My favorite is the "bush TV" : a set of chairs by the campfire to sit down and enjoy the sunset.

Room Tip: Any of the tents.

This tented camp is out of the way, but one with the environment. The tents are basic, but nice, with hot water bucket showers. There is a friendly welcoming vibe about the staff. It is associated with the local Maasai community, and you get a welcoming song and dance from the local maasai warriors. There are bush walks, night drives and village visits available. It is a great place to relax.

I have stayed at Whistling Thorn Camp twice. The second time was as part of an art safari, touring amazing locations in Northern Tanzania. In other words, of the many places we could have stayed, I made sure I brought people here. It has a quiet strength. It just feels so right, from the wonderfully warm welcome on arrival from quietly spoken Maasai, to the attentive service throughout. Lovely food, camp fire, comfortable bed, peace and quiet, perhaps a few hyena sounds in the distance at night, but the Maasai guards are there to ensure your safety. Shower water is brought to your tent, as is hot water for washing. It is simpler and a little closer to nature than other choices. (Here's some more down to earth information:Your accommodation is a large purpose built safari tent with protective thatched roof over, with large double bed, clothes rack and desk, with separate dressing and washing facilities and a ceramic wc on a smooth concrete base.) Hagai Kissila the proprietor is a lovely man, wise and knowledgeable and is running something special here.

We stayed a few nights in the camp and had the entire facility to ourselves. The staff was outstanding and very helpful. We were initially hesitant about staying in a tented camp, but the entire experience ended up being one of our favorite memories of our trip in Tanzania. The tents were clean and very comfortable; we had western style bathrooms and a very unique but effective showering system! We were provided with hot water whenever we wanted and our tent was guarded at night by members of the local Maasai tribe to fend off any curious animals from the neighboring Tarangire Park (a unique touch). There was a small fire at night before and after dinner and the food was always plentiful and delicious. Overall it was an extremely relaxing experience and definitely recommended over staying at one of the permanent hotels around.

This tented camp is off the beaten track (our seasoned guide even got lost trying to find it). It is a hidden gem and gives you the feeling of truly being in nature. The camp is how I picture 1950s Hollywood version of tented camps- old charm.

The staff were very attentive. Sometimes there was some minor confusions because of the staff's level of English, but they were all very well intentioned and sweet.

The rooms were comfortable. It is a bit overly luxurious having people have to boil water and carry it to have a shower, but it was really nice to have warm water. In the morning they also had two canvas basins filled with warm water to wash up.

The food was quite flavourful and hearty. The broccoli of all things was especially delicious.
In the evening, you can sit by the camp fire. In the morning, they served the best coffee we had on vacation with our breakfast of fresh fruits, omelets and other things.

A special little place if you want an authentic experience.

We stopped in this Camp after a Safari Day in Tarangire; altough we are not used to camps, the staff was able to make this stay one of the best in Tanzania.
The beer at the fireplace at sunset is a real medicine for the mind and the food is really surprising!
highly recommended

We stayed here one night on our feb safari and found it to be the best camp on our trip. Very clean and comfortable tents with plenty of space to move around. Hot bucket showers were great as were the flushing toilets. The staff were brilliant and food some of the best we ate on our trip! Everyone at this camp were very helpfull and friendly with a great sense of humour.. a wee game of football went down nicely too untill a huge thorn burst the ball and punctured my careless boyfriends foot... thats what he gets for running barefoot on the grass! Before dinner we were treated to an interesting Massai dance which i couldnt help but giggle the whole way through :) you dont get that in Scotland!! All in all we loved this place and I hope the young hard working boys that run it succeed in having a busy camp all year round! Excellent job!
