“Fantastic end to a wonderful safari”
Reviewed 5 December 2013

I would not have missed this for the world! The camp is right on the edge of the park(but not near the entrance) and the experience of watching elephants graze right outside your tent is something no amount of unnecessary 5 star facilities could top.The tents are, as previous reviewers have said, sturdy, clean and comfortable and we had a lovely dinner with our safari companions, followed by drinks around the bush fire. The masai guards walked us back to our tents and we drifted off to sleep to the sounds of the bush. A perfect end to our 1st, but not last, safari.

This was our first experience with a tented camp and all I can say is "wow". If I thought I'd be roughing it, I was wrong. Our heavy canvas tent situated on a raised concrete base with a terrace out front felt more like a cottage than a tent and a nice cottage at that. Inside were two comfortable beds, both surrounded by mosquito nets, a shower, a sink and a flush toilet. The main dining area was equally impressive, with an elegant open air atmosphere and the food was very good. While we were in tent #1 and were thus not far from the dining area, during the evenings we needed to be accompanied by one of the masai security guards. This was not an issue though there must have been a miscommunication our first evening as we ended up waiting for the masai guard for over an hour. We also worried about the means to communicate with the staff should we require something (or should something go wrong) once we were back at the tent as there is no telephone and we were not allowed to wander the grounds unaccompanied. We've since learned that a whistle or a light is provided at most tent camps though we were not provided with one when we checked in - which was likely just an oversight. Kirurumu is situated in the buffer area outside of Tarangire National Park and therefore sees frequent "animal" visitors from the park. Elephants wandered into our camp both nights we stayed there. In fact, an elephant was munching on a tree just steps from our tent the first night. I was a bit unnerved given its proximity but exhilarated at the same time - after all, this is why I came to Africa. Overall, our stay at Kirurumu was very pleasant and I could easily imagine staying for several days. We used this however as our base to visit Tarangire National Park and we therefore had to drive close to 1 hour (there was construction) on a dusty road twice daily.

During a 2 week+ trip to Africa in August, we stayed at a variety of accommodations, so this review is written from the vantage point of being able to compare lodging options. The Kirurumu Tarangire fixed tented camp lodge was VERY comfortable and met all of our needs (warm water, clean ensuite toilet facilities, electrical outlets, etc.). The real treat was the proximity to wildlife from our patio in front of the lodge. While enjoying a glass of wine, we identified numerous birds flitting in the bush, watched zebra and wildebeest grazing by, and listened to the cracking of timber as a lone bull elephant tackled an acacia tree to get to the tender foliage. We were also treated to a dikdik that came right up to our patio -- presumably feeling safer being closer to people!

This was our 3rd place to stay and our 2nd tented lodge. We received a warm welcome at reception along with a key on a keychain and a whistle. We were to use the whistle if we felt unsafe as animals would be roaming around the properties. We were shown to our tent by the Masai. We were told that we should not walk alone in the dark and that we would always have a Masai to accompany us. We were laughing about the whole situation.

After a fantastic dinner (best vegetarian dinner so far) we were indeed escorted by two Masai with spears - and we were glad we were. There was a large male elephant in front of our tent (about 10m/30ft). We had to go back to the restaurant until the elephant moved. After 10 minutes the elephant decided to graze elsewhere and we were then escorted to our front door. During the night you hear all kinds of familiar and unfamiliar sounds. You could hear hyenas crying, there were zebras grazing and the next morning when we woke up we had a herd of elephant in front of our tent. We counted 10, there was a baby one practicing to use it trunk. Adorable! We had to wait a while before we could leave our tent. During breakfast, the elephants walked by in formation. Very cool!

From the camp we went to Tarangire Park. It was about a 45 minute drive through Masai country.

The next day we did the guided walking tour and were accompanied by 2 Masai. One with spear the other one with a sword. One of the 2 spoke English very well and explained the medicinal use for many of the plants.

We were very lucky to see so many elephants at the camp. We understood that the elephants roam around in the dry season as there is a watering hole close by. During the rainy season they move elsewhere.

We stayed two nights at the camp and the accommodations, food and facilities were just average, The best part was a walk around the camp area with a Masai guide. He was very knowledgeable and enhanced our experience. Wish the camp staff had told us what to expect on the walk. If we had known the depth that was involved on the walk we would have gone out earlier to spend more time.

This lodge was lovely and had everything you needed. The tents have a toilet, sink and shower with constant hot water. We had one tent with twin beds and one with a double. The beds were very comfortable and had mosquito nets. The rooms also had mains electricity where you could charge your electronics.
The food was excellent and had a vegetarian option when asked- with soup to start and a dessert.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and you were escorted from the tent to the restaurant and back by the Masai. The rooms were clean and tidy and had everything you could need. You could hear the animals outside, which was very cool- but still felt very safe!
Would highly recommend.
