“Awesome view, but turn off the wifi”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 May 2014

This lodge makes a great deal of it's 'awesome view', and quite rightly so. It is in a great location, near the northern end of the park overlooking the river. It is quite large and the accomodation units are close to each other but that did not really cause a problem. Food is generally good, we had dinner served to us on our first night as they were so quiet but the second night more people had arrived so a buffet was provided. As with most Tanzanian lodges the staff were the highlight, so friendly, polite and keen to help.

The one thing that lets it down is the provision of wifi in the bar/lounge area. We wanted to enjoy a drink after dinner but it was full of people having loud Skype or Facetime conversations, completely ruining the ambience. If you must call home, call from your tent - yes it will cost but the fact that you are on safari means you are probably not short of a quid or two. We come on safari to enjoy wild Africa but I'm afraid this was more like sitting in the bar at a Holiday Inn.

Hello Rids64,

Thank you for your review.

Your comment is appreciated re. skyping / facetime in the lounge.
I agree with you 100% that it is annoying and ruins the ambience.

Since your review I have already been
asking guests not to. Shall put up a polite notice.

Many thanks indeed,

A. Simonson

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 May 2014

I stayed at Tarangire Safari Lodge for 2 nights in early May 2014 with my mom. We stayed in a tent with twin beds almost at the end with a river view. We loved our time at the lodge although we didn't spend much time there as we were mostly out on safari. There were only 2 other guests during our entire stay so the staff were all very eager to help us and make us feel special which we appreciated it. John was our Server for all meals and he was always very friendly and cheerful and we enjoyed the time we spent talking with him.

Feedback:
-LOVED the view and it is 100% the best you will see in Tarangire, we saw several elephants, waterbuck, birds, giraffes, etc all hanging around the water below.
-Great food, I am a vegetarian and they always cooked great options for me and because there were so few guests John would ask me what I wanted for dinner and the cook would make it each time. The portions are very large though so make sure you tell them you will either share with your travel companion(s) or ask for a smaller portion to be sure food is not wasted.
-Beautiful grounds, especially during rainy season because all the trees have leaves and are lush
-We saw dik diks and impalas right outside our tent and around the grounds

Negatives(if you can really call them that):
-Wifi only in main lodge(although we didn't mind for some people this matters)
-Credit card machine was not working when we checked out, luckily we had cash no big deal
-Gift shop if very expensive(but who cares there is vendors all over the place when you leave the park that offer good deals)
-No bug nets around the beds, the entire tents are screened in but there were still a few stray bugs in the tent at night
-Pool was closed
-Beds need more pillows

Suggestions:
-Make sure you plan to spend at least 1/2 a day at the lodge itself during your trip to explore the grounds of the lodge. We saw more animals from the bench at the end past the last tent looking over the river and park below then we did during a 4 hour game drive in the park. I could have sat on that bench for hours looking at the elephant herds migrate around below, beautiful.
-Bring binoculars

Our favorite accommodations during our 10 day safari.

Room Tip: choose a tent facing the river

Thank you Mallorylloyd for sharing your descriptive review. Thank you too for the 5 STARS! = )
Happy you enjoyed our locations / grounds, view & catering / service And that you would come again. A hearty welcome!
We did have to empty the pool last month - just for general cleaning & maintenance purposes! It was promptly filled again and is nice & clear. Pity it was empty when you were visiting. Sorry about that. And re. the prices in our gift shop - indeed they are more because we have to add taxes (VAT) on all items we sell. We try to sell items that are found no where else on the safari circuit. Sorry the credit card was not functioning! That hiccup is something beyond our control. But your advise for having cash on hand is good advise for anyone traveling where there are no handy ATMS. Extra pillows are also available should anyone prefer.

Thank you again and welcome again!

A fabulously comfortable lodge with incredible food and the most friendly staff in all of Tanzania. The views from the restaurant area are stunning. Elephants right below you, the river running through so a variety of animals all day.

Room Tip: The rooms furthest from the restaurant get the most animal noises at night, which we loved!

Going on a mission trip to Tanzania, the group also experienced safari opportunities. We spent two nights at Tarangire Safari Lodge and was surprised to find that we loved staying in a "tent". It's not your usual tent, as there were separate areas for the toilet, shower, and bathroom. While it had electric lights, there were no plug ins. But, there were lots of opportunities to charge whatever needed charging in the bar area (everyone just leaves their phones, iPads, etc. there for whatever time it takes to get them charged). No worries about theft as an employee is always around. We were well taken care of and while the food was good (especially the meat loaf and homemade rolls accompanying the soup), we it was the total package that made the experience so enjoyable.

We've just returned from a wonderful stay at the lodge. We took our 2 year old daughter and stayed in one of the bungalows overlooking the park. The view was just outstanding, both from our own accommodation and from the airy lounge area. The bungalow itself was spacious and had a huge, luxurious bathroom with a fantastic shower. We loved the fact that there was wildlife everywhere you looked and our daughter loved watching the Dik-Diks and birds.
The staff at the lodge were fantastic and really went out of their way to hep and accommodate us. We asked for early dinners, which was no problem and also asked for very last minute packed lunches for our last day. Nothing was too much to ask and the staff made us feel very welcome. We would most definitely recommend this lodge to anyone heading to Tarangire.

Room Tip: All of the tents and bungalows had an amazing view

We stayed at TSL for 2 nights in April. What can i say - it was wow! it was magical ! the views from the terrace and the lounge area are unreal ! They look over the tarangire river and park below and I could just sit there for hours watching the elephants, watching the sunset and the shadows the clouds cast on the park below. We spent the evenings sitting there with our beers sometimes even after dinner watching the stars. I could go stay there in any season for just the views even if i didn't go out for any game drives.
The food was great - there was alot of choices. the staff was so friendly. There are 35 tents in all. 1-22 in one row to one side of the main dining area and 22-35 on the other side. Tents are in close proximity but it didn't bother us. While at the lodge We spent most of our time in the lounge or out on the terrace. The tents were not large but were very comfortable and clean. The zippers worked fine and kept the bugs out. The beds were comfortable the linen was clean. There was a cool breeze at night so it wasn't warm or uncomfortable at all. The only slight let down was the shower - the water was hot but the flow was a trickle. But like i said the views did it for me! I say this is a must on any itinerary anytime of the year ! Asante Sana TSL for a most memorable stay!

Room Tip: tents with a clear unobstructed view of the river are 2, 5 (amazing view), 6, 7, 10, 17 (amazing vie...

Was pleasantly surprised here. Stunning location and the design takes great advantage of the natural assets with a nice pool and terrace overlooking a vast savanna below.
Excellent game viewing close by, saw a lion just outside the grounds and there is much much more other game too. Highly enjoyed the night drive with the owners son - recommend it, the perspective at night is so different and we saw many animals that you do not see in daylight including a very hard to find aardwolf.
The dining area is large and airy, the food very good, the lounge also large and airy with free nibbles at happy hour. Wifi too.
Our room was a tent, the semi permanent type with complete bathroom. It was simple but neat and clean, new and very comfortable, little seating area at front.
Great ambience here too, the owner was always around helpful and friendly, the staff too.
Wish we had more time !
