If you are looking for an off-the-beaten track, tranquil place with fabulous home cooking this would be a good choice. Just back from 3 weeks in Kerala and had 2 nights in an excellent heritage Homestay called Parnasaala, located in a village/town called Chatuthiakary which is near Allepy. The house is near one of the canals off the River Pumpa and not far from Nazareth Church. To get to the house you need to get one of the very regular 5 min canoe ferries across the river which in itself is an experience. The neighbourhood is laced with pretty canals and bordered by paddy fields. It is incredibly peaceful as there are no roads, therefore no cars. We did several home stays while in Kerala and loved them all - this was definitely the best. The historic teak house is over 200 years old and it is set in beautiful gardens. There is even an outdoor badminton court if you fancy some exercise! The owner is a a very interesting sculptor, artist and classical South Indian musician. We were treated to an amazing recital when we stayed there. The family are very welcoming. We enjoyed our conversations and walks around the neighbourhood with their two delightful sons (Man U fans!) and also did some walks ourselves....you can go for miles along the river bank and across the paddy fields. The traditional home cooked food was absolutely fabulous - we had a different breakfast on each of the 3 mornings were there. We were two vegetarians and a fish eater and we were provided with varied tasty lunches, afternoon snacks and hearty evening meals. Even though the family don't drink themselves, they were happy to provide us with ice cold beers on request - very welcome! They have two nicely simple, spotlesslessly clean rooms with fans. The best features of the rooms are the open air (but completely private I hasten to add) bathroom attached to the rooms - stylish and functional!
Highly recommended if you are looking for something a bit different for a few days. Their website is www.parnasaalahomestay.com
We arranged our own itinerary through India Footprints and can also recommend them. We had a driver and car for 2 weeks at a very reasonable cost and got pretty well exactly what we wanted.
