“Rip off”
Reviewed 20 January 2012

I hope this is the correct Purity. The Purity I am writing this review on is part of the 'Malabar Escapes' properties based in Kerala.
We stayed herefor 4 nights as part of our New Years vacation. We had no hot water in our room so were moved to a big suite as part of an apology gesture but unfortunately we took the same problem with us, still no hot water.
This property is tired and neglected. The owners are clearly laughing all the way to the bank we felt.
At 250euros a night we felt absolutely ripped off.
We have travelled to many to India many times and visited some of the Malabar Escape properties last year and returned on the basis that they were a decent company.
But our experience at Purity has totally put us off.
The towels they gave us to use for the pool were a disgrace for a residence of this standard and price. The pool looked dirty. The staff's clothes were grubby. The air conditioning didn't work properly. The tap water was yellow. The property was often lacking the presence of staff and many times we had to go looking for someone. After staying here we were very glad to leave and won't be returning.

We stayed 2 nights at this hotel and loved every minute. It ispse tend, beautifully furnished and the food was excellent. The most important aspect for us is service - which is about the best we have experienced in our wide travels. Nothing is too much trouble for the delightful staff and manager and their attentive service made the stay even more memorable. You can really relax at this place and wind down - perfect if you have been to Cochin beforehand. We borrowed the bicycles and pottered around but you don't need to go far to see the real life of Kerala, which the lake supports with mussel and fisherman. It is right outside your door and you can see a Chinese fishing net in action less than 100M away - ask Sabu to take you in his canoe and give you a demonstration. There are one or two things that could be tidied up - new cushions for the sun loungers for example, but these do not detract from what must be one if the most idyllic settings and places to stay on the lake. Small, intimate and like having your own private house. We didnt use the Spa but it offers serious Ayurvedic treatments. I would love to return one day.

We too stayed at Purity over New Year, 4 nights in all. Like the previous reviewer, we loved it. This is, however, a place which won't appeal to those looking for absolute pristine luxury. There were just a few slightly unpolished edges when you compare it to, say, some of Sri Lanka's über stylish 'boutique hotels'. Still, if you appreciate character, very friendly staff, stunning views and very good food then you'll love it. We had the other suite (known as the cottage, I think) which was very spacious and private but lacked the big views which I imagine the other suite have.

We stayed here over the New Year period and had a wonderful time. The building and environs are stunning. The Venamabad suite is incredible. The staff could not be more helpful - they were really lovely people and nothing was too much trouble. The food is amazing. Everything about this place is special. The staff laid on some fascinating dance and musical entertainment for New Year's Eve. The Ayurvedic massages are surprisingly invigorating and yet make you feel so relaxed afterwards. Recommend the one in which hot oil is dripped on your head! We took a lovely canoe ride on the lake with Sabu, which was much more fun and personal than a trip on one of the barges. Try to get a suite if you can - the Venamabad suite gives a little more privacy and has to be seen to be believed.

Room Tip: The suites are best - very large and private.

We stayed at this property in the last official week of monsoon, so the property was not very full. We had the Vembanad suite and one of the regular deluxe rooms, and both were beautiful. This property is much less generic than the bigger resorts nearby, and offers a variety of Ayurvedic spa treatments and boat tour options. I would recommend this for adults only, as it is not really big enough to have children around. My one small complaint is that internet access was only available in the lobby area, rather than in the rooms, but this isn't unusual for hotels in Kerala.

Room Tip: The Vembanad suite (shown in the picture) is really beautiful.

We started our honeymoon at Purity and they really set the bar high! Beautiful location right on the lake shore, with a lovely swimming pool under the palm trees. Stayed in the Vembanad suite which is spectacular. The service was great, staff very attentive without being over bearing. Can't wait to go back!
