“A surreal, breathtaking get-away in the middle of nowhere.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 August 2014

I've stayed in a number of outstanding boutique properties around the world, but few come close to matching the surreal beauty of Purity at Lake Vembanad.

It's a bit of a hike to get there- a solid two hours by car from Kochi International Airport (the last 10 minutes of which are through a tiny village that will have you questioning the accuracy of Google Maps) but once you get there you'll realize that it was worth every minute.

The main entrance is relatively simple and unassuming, but leads in to a well appointed reception area, dripping with what I can best describe as Kerala-chic. Once you check-in, you'll be taken through a central courtyard, after which your jaw will drop and your breath will be taken away.

Purity is basically built ON Lake Vembanad. It's called a lake, but for all intents and purposes it's a very large, very calm sea. For some reason it reminded me of the movie Life of Pi.

Coming back to the hotel- the property is beautiful and quirky, offering bright, vivid colors and traditional Kerala art. We had a great room, offering a direct view of the lake and a bathroom larger than most Mumbai apartments.

The beds were comfortable and inviting and the complimentary toiletries were world class.

One thing to watch out for though- being as close to the lake as we were, the property is teeming with dragon flies, wasps, mosquitoes and other assorted insects. So you'll need to keep your doors and windows shut at all times to keep them out. This took us all of 5 minutes to realize and once you do, you're all set.

Given how isolated this property is, you'll probably end up having most of your meals in-house, which is not necessarily a bad thing. Most of the food is really good, though a tad heavy- especially when it comes to the Indian dishes.

The service was outstanding. When we arrived at the hotel, we discovered that our book actually hadn't come through (thanks a lot, Hotels.com!) but the helpful staff took all of 5 minutes to sort this out and showed us to our room in under 5 minutes. They were also more than happy to arrange excursions to the backwaters of Kumarakom and to the bustling streets of Alleppey.

Of special note was the fact that when we checked out, the ENTIRE STAFF of the hotel lined up outside to wave us goodbye. It was a really nice touch and it sent us off with smiles on our faces.

All in all, I'd be back in a heartbeat. Strongly recommended.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the first floor, overlooking the lake.

We went as a group to celebrate a friends 40th and we had the most awesome time. This place is indeed magical. The decor uses Kerala architecture mixed with modern influences and sensibilities. The design ethic is beautiful and the attention to detail delightful. The rooms are spacious and wonderful - the whole space has such a good aura that it is incedible. The service was great and the people there made us feel very welcome. I would recommend this serene, boutique property very highly.

Room Tip: All suites are lovely

Was there in March. Absolutely magical. A small stunning hotel. Will never forget the first morning walking into the beautiful garden and being stopped by the shear beauty of the lake the colours of the water and peace. Just birds.

This apparently was out of season and we were the only ones in the hotel. It however had been very busy. Its a great time to go. Weather was perfect.

The hotels decor is amazing . A mixture of genuine Indian antiques and a modern Indian colour scheme. It worked beautifully to create a lovely atmosphere. Our room was beautiful and huge . I paced it out at 27 paces end to end. And the staff could not do enough . This is true of the whole area of Kerala were the people are just beautiful.

One tiny criticism. I love genuine Indian food. Food that the locals would eat at home . Like most hotels restaurants this is "watered down " to suit the European pallet. It is the same across Asia and it takes some time before it is realised you do like "spicy". If you like "spicy" stress the point.

Visited other hotels in the same small chain. Transfers were effortless. Would thoroughly recommend them.

We stayed here, as a couple last year and wanted to bring our friends with whom we were staying nearby this year. And again, the food, service and overall experience was excellent. An absolute must if you're staying in the area.

We travelled to India via Dubai and arrived early morning quite tired. What a wonderful welcome we received and how quickly we relaxed in this lovely place. The rooms were first class as was the food. We only were able to stay for one day because we had arranged to be collected by a houseboat at the hotel the following midday. An absolute delight....wish we could have stayed longer.

We stayed here for 2 nights in the 1st floor suite which was extremely spacious with a bathroom bigger than a lot of rooms we have stayed in in other hotels. The location is perfect overlooking the lake and with a Chinese fishing net just along from the hotel we were able to see the nets working. Although we had stayed in Cochin by the nets we had not managed to see them in action so it was great to be able to do so here. Also it was good to sit with a drink and watch the local fishermen at work.
We tried the spa here and found it excellent and we can really recommend the full massage with warm oil poured onto your forehead.
We were asked each day what we would like for our evening meal and when we wanted to eat it. You then go down to your table set by the river frontage and the food is very good.
The swimming pool was very attractive and not crowded. Definitely recommended.

Lovely, lovely place on Lake Vembanad on the Kerala backwaters. If it is available stay in the Vembanad suite, the whole 1st (top) floor of the charming original building, which is spacious and elegant with lovely antique furniture and lots of quirky spaces. Gardens run down to the lake and are an idyllic place to laze away the day or dine beside the water in the evening. Staff are wonderful, charming and attentive, food is superb and always inventive, nothing seems too much trouble. Cycling around the villages and countryside (on purity's rather rattly bikes) or taking the local ferries across the lake are both great ways of seeing the area without having to get in another car. The complimentary canoe trip around the fishing areas is not to be missed and the bird life is simply stunning.
Our only reservation is about the number of new rooms that have been constructed, if staying again I'd want to be very sure how many were occupied as I can't help feeling that the experience would be very different if it was full.

Room Tip: Vembanad suite is quiet and private with great views
