Thevercad was, without a doubt, one of the best places we stayed on our trip to India. The setting is idyllic and far away from the bustle of Alleppey. We enjoyed walking along the canals and near the rice paddies. The property itself is beautiful--the woodwork, the verandah, and especially the outdoor bathroom! George, Bindu and their children were very hospitable, giving us advice on what to see and how to get around (the sunset boat cruise and the government water taxi are both great options). Bindu was also an excellent cook!

Kuttanad with its geographical pecularities has so many exciting things for a traveller to experience. I dont think that one would find any other better place other than the Thevercad Home Stay to get the real feel of life around back waters. One could see that every other review here talks about how warm the whole family of George, Bindu and their children were. It is their effortless warmth and hospitality that really makes us feel at home. The house is old and traditional with well furnished rooms for guests which is located right on the banks of the river Pamba. My reveiw will be incomplete if I dont talk about the excellent and authentic Kerala cuisine prepared by Mrs.Bindu George. The most important thing which is worth a mention is how the home stay is run by the family without any domestic help giving the whole feeling of warmth and the original experience of living with such wonderful hosts. I was told that we were only the second group of Indians to stay there or else its mostly foreigners who get to know about this wonderful place through their friends who had travlled before. It is the best place to stay and experience the life in Kuttanad slowly unfold in front of you.

Our family of 5 stayed here in 2 beautiful rooms and really loved it. The rooms are gorgeous and the open air bathrooms like a 5 star Balinese resort. The hospitality and genuine warmth from all the family was delightful. Food exceptional and nothing was too much trouble. George and Bhindu are such lovely people. They organised a rice barge overnight boat trip for us, and the sight of this doing a U turn to dock right outside our door was a real thrill for the family. Highly recommended to combine a stay here with the rice barge experience, which was terrific as well.

This would have to be one of the best stays we have ever experienced.

The setting was sublime, the accommodation perfect - comfortable & authentic.

But what set this experience apart was the family, George & Bindu & their children. The genuine friendliness & hospitality was exceptional.

Then there were Bindu's meals, just fantastic South Indian cuisine. She went to so much trouble every meal, explaining the dishes in delightful detail. She also went to amazing lengths to prepare wheat free & vegitarian meals for my wife. Usually when we travel she struggles to find food she can enjoy, here she had choice without equal.

As you can see from our pics we were very lucky to be there for the rice harvest of George's fields. This was a great undertaking which the whole family helped us to experience (as observers). What impressed me about this was that throughout the harvest, which demanded much from George, he took time out to look after us, even coming to see us off in the middle of a labour dispute.

Words cannot express our gratitude to the whole family!

Stayed for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed our visit - 150 yr old farmhouse, 6th generation in family - lots of character in the 2 rooms converted from an old granary - all wood and new bathrooms. Nothing was too much trouble - the whole family went out of their way to serve us and make our stay comfortable. Food, as everyone else has mentioned, was excellent, some of the best we have had in nearly 3 weeks in Kerala. We went on a 4 hour boat trip, organised by George, and also took a tuktuk into Alleppey which was fun - again, George/Bindu made sure the driver knew where to take us and stayed on hand. Lots going on right in front of the sit-out - endless rice barges, ferries, canoes, salesmen etc as well as lots of people going about their everyday lives (plenty of smiling school children on their way to the two nearby schools). Out the back it was entirely different - a vibrant green landscape of paddy fields. Would certainly recommend - a very enjoyable experience.

We stayed here for 2 nights over new years eve and had a great time. This is wonderful, caring family who went out of their way to make our stay as enjoyable and comfortable as possible. The food was sensational (thank you Bindhu). Bindhu and George went out of their way at every meal to try and cater for our very fussy children (aged 3 and 6). Their sons were delightful and our children adored playing with them - cricket one afternoon, and then fishing in the river - we even caught a little fish! They put on fire works and sparklers on new years eve as a surprise which was amazing, and organised a boat trip for us. When our son became unwell again they were very attentive making sure we had the help we needed. The room was beautifully finished in dark wood and had a big comfortable bed, and we loved the outside bathroom.
We had a great stay here and would totally recommend it.
Thank you George, Bindhu and family.

Simply can't say enough good things about the two days we spent at this beautiful homestay with this lovely family! Loved the peace & quiet, the local walks, the tropical green landscape and beautiful rice fields, friendly villagers and school children, and the sunset boat cruise George arranged. George was away most of the time, at a funeral, and then picking his son Thomas up from the seminary in Alleppey where he is studying to be a priest, but Bindhu and Alex (George & Bindhu's 17 year old son) made us feel so welcome and at home, and we really enjoyed the time we spent talking and getting to know them. As other's have said Bindhu is a fabulous cook, and we enjoyed the delicious meals. The house was beautiful and our room and outdoor bathroom were very comfortable, with a very comfortable bed and excellent air conditioning, which we really needed because of the heat & humidity though the mornings were cool and comfortable. Have never slept so well! Enjoyed this so much more than a houseboat because we had the opportunity to walk along the paths through the rice fields and along the canals, and meet people along the way to experience the life in the backwaters. Some of the children spoke a bit of English and as we passed one of the houses along a canal a man who was outside in his garden invited us in to chat. He was a retired anesthesia technician who spoke good English. All in all, it was a perfect homestay and a wonderful respite from the noise and chaos of India. An absolute highlight of our 3 weeks in Southern India.
