“Lots of character!”
Reviewed 15 August 2009

There are a few rooms in a beautiful, over a century-old house and a 200-year old cottage. The place is not luxurious but has loads of character and a spectacular setting. The owner family is amazingly friendly and really make you feel like home. The food has interesting Keralan flavours - not something they serve at Indian restaurants (at least in Finland) - and there is always more than you are able to eat. The location is convenient and it its easy to make a trip to Alleppey town by bus or ferry, walk around the vicinity, or take a relaxing housboat cruise.

We stayed at Poopallys in January 2009 for 3 nights and had a wonderful time. Our driver from Varkala had a bit of trouble finding the place which is a few kilometers from Alleppey itself and we were starting to wonder what we had let ourselves in for as we headed further away from town. On arrival you can see that the house is beautiful but when you step outside the view is simply stunning. You're right on the backwaters with houseboats slowly passing by every few minutes. Our room had a river view and was really nice with AC but it did have the biggest spiders I have ever seen - we actually heard one run across the floor - so if you really have a fear of spiders this would be a problem.

Joseph and Cecily his wife are wonderful hosts. Joseph showed around his garden, pointing out all the interesting plants and their uses. He also arranged for a motor launch for us for a couple of hours at sunset which was really magical as it can get into the small canals where the house boats can't. We liked it so much that we went again the next morning at sunset. One tip that another couple gave us was to have a shorter trip and cut out the section across the lake as you spend a long time on a crossing a wide expanse of water which isn't so nearly as interesting as the small canals. Joseph also arranged an auto rickshaw to take us into Alleppey for a couple of hours.

Although we were on a 9 week trip around India - we're not too keen on Indian food so we were a bit concerned about the food knowing it was a homestay and would probably be South Indian Food. Fortunately we could manage most of it which was just as well as there isn;t any choice or consultation about the meals provided and its too far out of town to eat elsewhere.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would recommend it provided you're happy with South Indian food and you don't have a fear of (pretty big) spiders!

This was probably one of the best stays of our trip. The property is over 100 years old and situated on a beautiful stretch of the river. The room was good, though there were electricity problems. I loved the cooking, though my companion thought it could have been spicier. Both Joseph and Cicily seemed to be working non stop to make our stay comfortable. Their grandchildren were staying, full of enthusiasm to talk to the guests, which we did not always want, so were pleased that there were others staying as well.

Unlike another reviewer, we were pleased with the price of our prebooked houseboat trip (booked via Joseph's son, Paul). It was considerably less than all those advertised, though we might have got a better price if we had walked round all the boats themselves. However, it was about 37 degrees midday, and not how we wanted to spend our time. We walked by the river, sat outside the room overlooking the river, went on a motor boat and local ferry, and ate too much. A lovely interlude in a packed trip. Yes, it was comparitively expensive, but worth it.

Stayed here for 5 nights in January 2008 after a month long trip around Inida. It was a wonderful stay, and somewhere i could totally chill.
It is a fair way from the main town, so you have no choice but to relax! Spent a lot of time walking along the river bank, and borrowed Josephs canoe for a trek to the church firther down the river. Exhausting but great! You will also see HUGE bats (bigger than seagulls) if you walk out at dusk...very scary!
If you are the type of traveller that likes to go out and sample food in restaurants, dont stay here. It is too far from the town, and they are few places to eat in the town anyway.
The food Cicily serves up is lovely, but to a particular taste. Jospeh says they tone it down for the tourists, but i almost wished they spiced it up! Whilst the food was lovely, it was quite restricting having your menu decided for you, and the being forced to eat until you pop! That said the service is second to non and you do feel looked after.
Joseph and Cicily are the most wonderful people, they truly are. But please dont get suckered in by Joseph telling you that everybody else will "rip you off". The old fella does this himiself! We booked a house boast trip at half the price Joseph quoted us, and the same can be said for massages too.
The one theme that followed us through India is that they want your money! And if you give it, boy do they take it :)
If you dont like spiders, dont stay here. I was a nerbvous wreck for the whole stay as the room was teaming with the biggest dudes i had ever seen in my life!
The rooms are comfy though if you can cope with the above! But the rooms are very pricey, the most expensive in our trip to India - even more so than Mumbai.
But if you go to Inida, Kerela is a must!
x

I have been travelling for two months in India, for the most part in Homestays, and Poopally`s Homestay was the best of them all. The location right at a backwaters river arm is postcard-perfect, a great place to unwind and relax. From the riverside, you can watch birds and tropical butterflies buzzing around. The rooms were spotlessly clean and cozy, especially the Honeymoon Bungalow. The homecooked food was a special treat, and what made the place really perfect was the outstanding warmth and hospitality of Joseph, our host, and his lovely family. We had great conversations with him, he gave us very interesting tour through his Ayurvedic Garden, and Joseph was most helpful in giving suggestions on what to do in the Backwaters area, and also organized ayurvedic massages, daytrips, boat rides and a houseboat stay for us. In retrospect I would say Poopally´s was one of the 5 top accomodations I have ever stayed in. Poopally´s Homestay made our stay in Kerala special.

We stayed at Pooppallys for 2 nights in January 2009 after arriving on the train from Kochi. It's located about 30 mins autorickshaw ride from the train station.
On arrival we received a very warm welcome from Joseph who showed us around the property including his garden which is full of fruit trees, spices and plants used for medicinal purposes - which we found fascinating.
Our room was very spacious, clean and the bed comfortable.
During our time at Pooppallys, we enjoyed walks along the river bank meeting the locals, being 'mobbed' by the local school children who were just delightful, the story behind why the children put their finger up and ask for 1 pen..... Joseph delights in telling this storey and the backwater boat cruise Joseph organised - in time for the sunset.
As part of the accommodation package at Pooppallys, were our meals. I cannot speak highly enough of the wonderful meals that Cicily - Josephs wife cooked. We can honestly say they were THE BEST meals we had during our month in India - even the smoothies Cicily made for morning or afternoon tea as refresher drink.
We thoroughly enjoyed are relaxing stay at Pooppallys and, if ever we were visiting India again - which I hope we do - we will certainly visit Joseph and Cicily again as they were two of the most beautiful people we had the pleasure of meeting during our time in India.

Joseph and his family made our stay absolutely delightful. While there we met several fellow travellers with whom we have stayed in contact. Our stay at Pooppallys was a highlight of our trip to Kerala!
