“Avoid Pagoda Resort if you can”
Reviewed 30 April 2009

This hotel is a total disappointment, i stayed here for 2 nights and i am glad that i did not stay longer. I would not recomment this hotel except if you just need a place to spend the night.
I stayed in the independent cottage. Do not go by the pictures, the land scaping is nice but the rooms are suffocating with no proper ventilation. We had the breakfast and dinner included in our package. This hotel had the worst food i ever had in kerala. The ayurveda massage is overpriced and not worth the money. The towels and bedsheets are old and worn out. The bathroom is suffocating. One good thing about the cottage is that it does have privacy as the landscaping is designed such that it covers the verandah.
The staff lacks manners and courtesy. The good thinng was the house boat, the staff on the house boat was courtesous and gave us good service.

We booked this hotel at the last minute (having decided not to stay on a kettuvallom/houseboat due to bad weather forecasts). In spite of not having paid the requisite advance to secure our booking, the hotel car was at Cochin airport to meet us. The transfer took about 2.5hrs.

On arrival we were disappointed to find our "suite" was in a large, ugly, institutional block rather than in the attractive cottages shown on the website.

A quick look at the 2 available cottages (both close to an electricity substation) confirmed that we had in fact booked the better option, as the cottages were very small, dark and musty. Our suite was spacious, and once the initial probs (a/c not working/ no toilet paper/ dead gecko in the sink) had been resolved, it was perfectly adequate. We had a room on the 4th floor, and most of the time only 1 of the 2 lifts was operational and the 2nd lift was busy.

The staff were willing (if not always able), and seemed a little over-keen to arrange our houseboat trip. As for food, breakfasts were average but room-service meals were good. There is a "Beer & Wine Parlour" on the site, reasonable-sized pool (with very slippery granite surround - take care), and a small kiddies playground, as well as a resident monkey, and geese who will peck any small people that chase them!

The hotel is located close to the area where houseboats and motorlaunches are moored (it may be cheaper to take a tuktuk and negotiate with the boat men direct rather than book through the hotel and their agent (Coco Houseboats at the time of our visit) as there were plenty of boats along the riverside just waiting for tourists.
In the immediate vicinity of the hotel are quieter waterways, but we couldn't find any "tourist boats" here, only locals.

After 2 nights we had overcome our initial disappointment and become quite fond of the hotel and staff. Having said that, the main purpose of our visit to Alleppey was to take a trip in a kettuvallom; in the event we could have done this in spite of the weather, so we'd be unlikely to stay here again.

Ok, first the positives:
Pool was ok, clean enough that we got into it so I did not see the problems with pool as someone else described.
Room was spacious with a nice balcony (we didn't stay in the cottage) , better than most hotels in this category in Kerala. The kids enjoyed the swings and stuff. The bar staff (yes there's a bar right next to the swings, go figure but oh so practical when you are on your holidays) was extremely friendly. The food was better than most buffets (we stayed in 4 hotels while we were in the Kochi area) in the region.

Big huge Negative:
The housekeeping knocked on our door at 12am to deliver the rollaway bed after calling twice; we were just tired after a long drive from the mountains and just fell asleep. I declined because it would have meant rearranging everything (these rollaway beds actually required 5 minutes setup time). Sure enough they wanted to charge us for this upon checkout. I didn't view this to be a problem so I asked for the manager. They all kind of surrounded us telling us white lies about why they needed to charge us for this (extra person, not extra bed and so on). No one took responsibility for the fact that we were disturbed at 12am...I took the responsibility to find the owner who happened to be on the premises and the matter was resolved. You know what, it was $10 and we probably should have not let this upset us but the way they treated us was harsh at best. Turns out that the manager was the owner's brother in law who probably wasn't put there for his customer service skills.

A good deed gone bad considering the good time we had at the hotel. Struggling to see how we rate these guys but it upset me enough to come report on this. In general, when you are in India, always confirm your rate, what are extras and what are not (our agent had indicated an extra bed and not an extra person).

Another Australian couple we talked to complained about hot water issues, turns out they kind of run out after 10am so shower early kiddies.

We are 4 senior citizens who have travelled extensively in India and the far east. Stayed at Pagoda Resorts for 2 nights in two rooms in the main building as opposed to the cottages. Found the rooms to be as desired with adequate amentities. AC and fan worked fine. Rooms and bathrooms were clean. Location relative to town was fine, only a 15 minute walk. Cost was $45 per room per night including breakfast. Reception staff was not helpful when asked some basic questions but answers were readily available in town.

we were impressed by the hotel website and decided to go to allepey instead of kumarakom..frankly it was disapointing, the location of the hotel is away from the backwaters and situated in the heart of allepey town opposite a canal. The pool as in the previous review was very dirty and murky and seemed not to have been cleaned for long time, though the website promised of an upgrade to cottage if available ,we were not given the change even though the hotel was less than half full. our room though clean had a pungent overbearing smell, room service was good, but the restaurant is hardly used by anybody and had a run down empty look. in short Pagoda is good only for an overnight stay if u must stay in allepey. Go to the lake resorts of Kumarakom for a real feel of kerala backwaters

We stayed here for one night on our tour of Kerala as it had been recommended to us for being a nice hotel with excellent Aryvedic treatments. We had a wonderful stay. The rooms had air conditioning and were clean and spacious. The pool was clear and our daughters and the rest of the family had great fun in it for most of the afternoon. It was located in a quiet area which is good for going onwards to the houseboats. The staff were friendly and helpful. The food, as in most hotels we stayed at took a little while to come but when it did it was good, fresh and very tasty. Worth waiting for. The breakfast was a buffet and catered for both Indian and western tastes. The aryvedic treatments were wonderful and while some of our party were relaxing in there the other half were relaxing on a guided canoe trip of the backwater and Princes Lake. I have nothing bad to say about this resort. It is better than most 3 or 4 star hotels/resorts that we have stayed at. We would definitly recommend it and will be staying there again when we are in the area.

  • Liked — It was large, clean, had a comfortable kingsize bed and good shower. Staff were friendly.

The Pagoda Resorts is located slightly off the beaten track in Alappuzha. Booked a cottage in the resort from viewing their impressive looking website. I had thought this would be a nice little place to stay from the pictures. A resort it is not, one filthy pool which you could not even see the bottom was the first site which greeted us. The cottage/room appeared to be pleasant and clean at first but come nightfall an invasion of cockroaches and insects descended upon the room fro both the bathroom and from the one inch gap underneath the main door.

Had the misfortune of booking a 3 star house boat through the internal travel agents (before I realised of the other issues). Although I was charged full whack for the AC 3 star houseboat to go to near Kochi, the boat was completely substandard and had zero of the features described by the Pagoda travel agent Antony (avoid him like the plague, Pagoda also have offices beside the bus station).

A truly terrible hotel/resort, after staying in a hundred properties in over 40 countries over the past five years this has been the worst!
