Its a Wonderful place and must visit destination...Best time to visit is just at the fag end of Rainy season to njoy the wonderful water droplets on the trees and the view of all this from the room is breathtaking.

The main machan is just a wonderful place to stay...the locatiion of the rooms within is wonderful and the service of the staff is very homely...

6 of us stayed at this place from 25th - 27th Feb 2011 occupying the 'Machan'. Our experience was extremely poor given the issues we faced with respect to service & food. Given the amount that this place charges (Rs20k per couple for 2 nights), it severely lacks a service to match this.
The food ranges from below average to average & is extremely basic; would personally recco to avoid chicken as it is of local quality & does not taste good at all. With high room charges i am amazed as why would they not invest behind good quality meat (Godrej/Venky's) & a more than good Chef; clearly it is made by a local house cook. The menu is quite basic: no fruits on offer, extremely basic breakfast on offer..
The staff is under trained; the used welcome drink glasses & wet towels were not cleared from the reception area for more than 12 hours whereas the evening tea, snacks & dinner utensils were kept uncleaned in the kitchen adjoining the 'machan' all night leaving a bad stink & clogged sink :(
The place does have basic lighting in the premises; the pathways have no lights & hence quite task to venture out in the dark.
Getting hot water in the loo's was quite a challenge..the water would oscillate between hot & cold & mysteriously after a couple of showers would get normal. A bath tub has been provided in the bigger loo but does not have a stopper & hence cannot be used. When contacted, the staff said 1st its a water conservation method(!!), we said then why is there a bath tub in the 1st place & showers and only buckets should be provided, post which we were informed that the previous guest 'stole' the bath tub stopper & they need time to replace. the shower in the same loo spills water outside the bath tub wetting the entire loo (talk about water conservation..).
This place needs to be educated on 'corkage' concept (to be charged if you provide alcohol but since people get their own either cos they want something premium or cos the hotel cost is prohibitive). 1st they have no literature saying that they provide alcohol etc etc but they charge corkage, 2ndly they dont believe in asking guests on how many bottles were used; we took 6 assorted bottles of alcohol out of which we stuck to only 2 types throughout our stay but the bill showed corkage for 6; on enquiring how they figured out we used all 6 they said our staff saw that various different drinks were being served!!! (after being in the room getting ice!! what observation?!). I am sure with the type of people coming they can inquire about the same rather than relying on their under trained staff...
All in all a very average experience; extremely over priced with not good staff/ food & experience to back it up. With the kind of money they charge i am sure i can find a much more enjoyable & +ve memorable experience somewhere else.

Dear Prabh,

Let me start off by apologizing for the absolutely unusual experience you had at our location. That being said, we are disappointed that you didn't take a moment to pen down your thoughts in our guestbook and in general just walked away stating everything was great with regards to your stay. I have looked into the various issues that you pointed out personally and would like to clarify certain points that you have stated in the review above:
- Our chicken is sourced directly from Venky's, just thought you'd be keen to know that
- With regards to food preparation we tell all our guests that we primarily focus on Freshly made Home Style Indian fair which is low on spices. We don't expect a star rating on our Homely food but, as you can see from others comments, more often than not is is particularly praised.
- Unfortunately, I was not able to independently verify whether the welcome drink and dishes were cleared on time. Hence, I apologize if there was a delay in the clearance. This is unacceptable and we shall ensure this is not repeated in the future for any reason.
- As you know we run 100% on renewable energy hence, conservation is key. That being said our accent lightening along paths is intentionally kept low key and all guests are provided with torches for this reason.
- Corkage is a service charge that is used primary by us for recycling and waste disposal. This is clearly stated on signs in every unit and explained to you upon Check-in. We were shocked that after you admittedly used 6 bottle over your two night stay you caused a rather embarrassing scene at Check-out where we gladly made the 4 bottles you suddenly denied using complementary. The trivial sum at hand really was inconsequential and we regret that it caused you to mar your stay and our personal experience of having the pleasure of serving you.

In essence we did our very best to serve you: a special dinner on the first evening followed by a lovely fireplace dinner for everyone in your group on the second evening. Our staff on site were told by those in your party that they enjoyed their stay and in particular the mother and child that were with you. Sorry to hear you didn't feel the same. In the future, please do let management know right away if things disappoint you and we can do our best to alleviate any concerns on site rather than let them brew.

Regards,
Management

I've been to Lonavala quite a few times and stayed in a wide range of properties there, ranging from private residences to resorts to star hotels, but nothing really 'gets' Lonavala like this place does.

The setting is magical, the decor tasteful, the beds comfortable and unlike most other places, secluded and serene. A tree house with views of a vast and beautiful green canopy, a complete rarity so close to the city. No televisions, no phones, eco friendly construction and design, an easy way to deal with stress for urban professionals.

It's fairly expensive but it includes breakfast, dinner and accommodation for 6, with semi-privacy for two of the three double beds. The food is good and almost like a home cooked meal, although they should increase the quantity a fair bit. A BBQ would be a welcome addition as well. It's close enough to Lonavala Market to allow you to get supplies, but do so in the evening, not much open late night there.

A word of caution for those with small children (1-5 yrs), they will require constant supervision, specially if they're anything like mine and don't sit still for a minute. But if you're a hands on parent, you couldn't ask for a better spot to increase their eco quotient.

Almost all of Mumbai's residents visit Lonavala, most more than once, what I can say to them is... you haven't been to Lonavala till you've stayed in The Machan.

Fell in love all over again! And the Machan had a lot to do with it.
After a long holiday tripto South Africa and back needed to breath India to settle down and rewind back to our routine in mumbai. So The Machan suited us well with our Anniversary on cards and just 6months old baby a place we could laze around watching her li'l laughter and naughty luks:)
The mail with direction map and do's and donts itself won my heart the way it was drafted lyk guiding a relative home it showed they care. The drive was smooth and held all the suspense till we got there as there were no sign boards or large hoardings displaying The Machan (which I lyked , was like hunting for Wonderlands). the white painted rocks which leads to the private road to Machan was rustic and kept the suspense going and the moment we reached we were welcomed with smile by the Machan team Wasim, Anant ,Sarla & the helpers, their warmth just spread and assured me we are in safe hands .
Our Camp was so accommodating and the view atop the canopy breathtaking! One thing you'll notice and is outright on your face is the place is set up piece by piece by Mr.Ahuja the owner. Every furniture evry wall hanging and photograph, even the trees and the plants around has a story on their existence there. Its lovely ....Sophie the french guide for us every tree and plant in the wild had a name and character , the star gazing at night she new each of them they are her friends and its the first time I felt the trees Live and not just grow! Thanks to Sophie I take back a new hobby home and soon will have a book on stars and a telescope for Star Gazing and thanks Sophie Betelgeuse ( Beetlejuice) is not just Tim Burton directed movie but is the second most brightest star:)

What more could I ask for the night to celebrate my Anniversary ......Opened up a Champagne and raised a toast & cheers to my wildest and Magical weekend Anniversary Hideout at The Machan - Camp Canopy.
Will look forward to being there again.........I guess that says it all. Thanks to everyone at The Machan for making it special & Thank God especially for no network on my hubby's cell ;P.

Highly recommended!

Few things surprise you in this busy life . . .

The Machan has been an experience that we will cherish for life.

The hospitality and experience has completely surprised us as we came in with no expectations.

The owner has been kind enough to create such a wonderful place which is nothing less than paradise.

Our Canopy tent, the food, the nature trail, fudge surprise and most amazing 18 hours spent at The Machan will stay with us forever.

We wish the team and contributors to the Machan all the very best for a natural & fabulous future!

If we were to describe our experience in one word it would be “SUPER”!!!

It’s definitely a perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of city life. Loads of fresh air and nature all around .A must do is the long early morning walks and the treks. Its amazing how the guide can identify every sound of the insects and birds.

What was also really nice was the cosy evenings and the fabulous hospitality of the owners - I think that’s what makes the Machan so wonderful and we hope to definitely come back in a group!”
