We stayed here with friends who were previous guests, and we were impressed with the wonderful view from the rooms and the pool area. However, that was the only real positive. The rooms, although generally clean, are in need of renovation, (apparently, new bed spreads were provided recently) and the bathrooms are very stained, and the build up of soap grime is appalling. They need major renovation. The stone tiles around the pool are very eroded and are dangerous, and the limited sun lounges are in poor condition
The restaurant food is generally quite good, but expensive compared to other local prices, and the cost of soft drink cans is ridiculous at $2.20. (local price is less than $1). Visa facilities are available, but cannot be relied upon as the connection is frequently down, and there is no manual backup available. As the closest ATM is over an hour away by expensive taxi, this can be very inconvenient and costly.
We did not see the owners at all during our stay, and other long term guests indicated that they live and work in Denpasar, and now only come out for a quick visit every few weeks. I think that the Bayu is suffering severely from lack of owner presence and interest, in both maintenance and staff attitude, and is slowly but surely in decline. It is overpriced in its current condition.

Thank you for your review.

True, this hotel is far from the newest in Amed. However, all that’s advertised and required to make a guest’s stay comfortable in both the hotel in general as in the guest’s rooms is well maintained and serviced. Rooms are cleaned / serviced on a daily basis, bed sheets and towels changed every other day, hot water works, air con works, TV and satellite signal works, Wi-Fi works, in-room safe deposit box works, etc., etc.

Instead of opting for a major renovation, the choice has been made to change / service or renew hotel facilities / amenities one by one and only if hotel occupancy allows so. The minor issue with the sun-loungers you’re referring to, has been dealt with. Also, some guest’s rooms have recently been refurbished and redecorated. The removal of built-up calcium deposit (not soap residu) on taps, showers and hoses is part of the bi-monthly cleaning programme.

A comparison of the prices of food and drinks at our formal and fully licensed restaurant with informal, unlicensed and family-operated small businesses in Amed, is one we will always loose. However, we hold our CSR high and prefer to be a responsible business that’s truly licensed, our workers are paid well and have workers insurances and other benefits, and pay taxes to the government instead of running an illegal business with underpaid workers.

Correction: the most expensive canned drink at our restaurant is a 330ml can of beer, Bir Bintang, and costs Rp. 18,500,- ( = US$ 1,65 / AU$ 1,72) + 10% mandatory government tax.

Correction: The nearest ATM is located not 1 hour away from our hotel, but just 15 minutes away in the village of Culik. Soon one will open in Amed village, only 10 minutes away.

Our wireless credit card payment option depends on signal from a GSM antenna. Sometimes, that signal disappears due to whatever reason, and affects both us as well as the clients.

The owners do live in Denpasar and usually visit the hotel / restaurant twice a week, and also spend the weekends and school holidays there if their other business / activities allows so. However, due to many of our guests doing outdoor activities during daytime the owners sometime don’t meet some guests at all, especially with the guests who stay 3 nights or less at the hotel.

We've been there twice: in 2011 and 2012. At first we were looking for a hotel at Amed that also provide PADI course, fortunately the owner of Bayu is a PADI instructure (a very good one!). When we told the owner that we will bring our 7 month baby with us, they offered us a baby crib for free, they even borrowed us a baby tub since they only have shower in the bathroom which was kinda difficult to use it for a 7 month baby. The room was large with straight view to the ocean and to the mountain on the left side. They also have tv cable. The food was delicious: ayam bakar is my favorite!

What impressed me the most is how friendly all the staffs are. On our second visit which was on a year later, they welcomed us as if we were just been there few days ago. They even still remembered my son so well. It felt like being welcomed by our own family. Lovely!

We stayed as a family of six at bayu for four nights in two rooms and a shared terrace which offered stunning views across the bay and behind into the mountains. The position was fantast ic with a minute walk on to the beach and stunning coral gardens teeming with fish. The staff were warm and helpful, food delicious especially their traditional chicken dish - a must for anyone. The pool is small but deep and offers a cooling dip. Amed was quiet with a chilled vibe - a lovely start to our holiday

Room Tip: Take one of the rooms on the top terrace for the best views

We spent 4 days at Bayu Cottages with mixed feelings. The place is certainly overpriced. These are not cottages but a small hotel with standard rooms. The pool is minuscule and the food expensive. Two major negative points:
1. The staff, during our stay, was really of no help at all and busy playing loud music to themselves from very early in the morning to late in the night. It was impossible to get any local trip / activity arranged beyond the taxi to our next location.
2. The hotel is not on the beach, so you will have rent your place and shade on the beach across the road.

The music played at our hotel in the restaurant and pool area is “easy listening” music, varying from evergreens to reggae music. The music is played from breakfast time till late in the evening, at a decent back-ground level. Most of our guests appreciate this, but some guests however find any music at all to be too loud.

True, our hotel is not on the beach but within just 25 meters walking distance, having to just cross a small road. Even when staying at a beachside hotel, one would have to rent loungers and parasols as these nowhere come for free in Amed.

We regret to hear your opinion on our standard rooms as being “overpriced”. This type of room with an area of at least 40 sq. meters, a terrace or balcony with sea view, a special queen size comfort bed, a private bath room with hot / cold water, air conditioning AND a ceiling fan, a flat screen satellite TV, safe deposit box, free Wi-Fi access, breakfast, etc., etc. is among the best in the area if the daily room rate is compared to all that’s included / available.

The view is spectacular and the pool area is very nice. Rooms are spacious and clean. Bathroom could be refreshed. Great balcony!!

When we arrived the staff was not so friendly and immediately tried to sell us boattickets for the gili islands (we didnd t buy them because we found much cheaper tickets on the beach).

The staff who served us in the evening was very friendly.

The food is not good (big menu : better to put only a few dishes that have great taste) and the kitchen doesn t look clean. This can improve.

I would recommend the hotel because price-quality is perfect and the view-pool is great.

I stayed 4 nights with my 2 boys aged 6 and 8.
Unfortunately we were plagued by extremely bad weather (rain storm, big waves which made snorkeling difficult, nothing dried.. and no fish to eat as the fishermen couldn't go out!).
Pluses:
-Lovely, helpful and friendly staff, always ready to help, and honest management (when I cancelled my last night, they gave me my money back)
- bright, calm and clean bungalows with AC and TV (yes, for once, this was useful to keep my kids occupied as they couldn' t go out during 2 solid afternoons in the pouring rain!)
- Anything that broke down was swiftly repaired, and with a smile
- Good views over the ocean (beware that the cottages are built on the hillside, and that you will have to cross the road to go to the beach, which wasn' t clear from the pictures I had seen)
- Good and healthy breakfast
- The pool area is really cute

Minuses:
- I think the restaurant is overpriced, especially the Indonesian fares (nasi goreng at 49900 Rp, almost 5 dollars!), and the minuscule chicken soups for almost 4 dollars would benefit from being upgraded to the size of the bakso soup -which is excellent-
- Bayu is quite far out of the village, so if you have kids, be sure you take a minimum of supplies like crackers and juices with you. as we were alone at Bayu for 3 days, the kids got a bit bored. Fortunately that the weather improved, that helped!

The beach: nothing special - some litter, as usual!- especially if you have been to Lombok or Flores. When the weather got better, I finally had a go at snorkeling (which was one of the reasons I booked at Bayu), and found the coral reef in good condition and quite lovely.

Room Tip: Cottage 4 is situated half way on the hill, not too steep and yet removed enough from the road and w...
