Bayu cottages is located on a small cliff, at a stones throw distance from lipah beach. The view from the rooms is excellent. Since it is a small Hotel, the service is personal and the staff is very friendly. The food quality is very good and the service is prompt. Lipah beach is just across the road and the snorkeling at Lipah is one of the best in the world. The water is calm and clear and we have not seen such wonderful coral anywhere else. There are locals on the beach who rent out snorkeling equipment, but it would be better to take your own as you wound probably will not like to use a mouth piece used by many. The owners of the Hotel were very helpful in planning our tour and always replied very promptly to all our queries. This is one of the best value for money hotels that I have visited, and I would recommend Bayu to anyone who wants to spend peaceful holiday at Amed, away from the crowds, along with a lot of local activities like cycling, diving, snorkeling and a sunrise ride on a fishing boat.

Room Tip: All rooms are bay facing with excellent views, but top floor rooms no 4, 5 and 6 have a better view

If you want 24/7 service, this is not your place. But if you want relax with peace and watching pool at the sea, this is your place. Our room was clean, but little bit worn. Room price at low season was about 30€. Breakfast is also ok, and you can choose by three different options. Hotel staff was also frendly and helpful.

Well, what can I say? Aside from the fantastic view of the sea and the mountains by the terrace, we enjoyed the overall ambiance of the place and the warmth of the staff. The owners have been very attentive to us and our needs... even serving a festive Ayam Batutu for dinner! Truly, the place made our stay in Amed a one-of-a-kind experience.

When we arrived from the airport, we could not check-in and we ended up waiting for an hour as the staff was asleep. When we entered our room the bathroom door couldn't be locked and the owner was sarcastic stating they couldn't do anything about it till the following morning. Never mind the fact that the room should have been checked for maintenance issues prior to our arrival. Although the owner promised to send the staff over to fix the door, till the day we checked out the bathroom door was yet to be fixed. Thus, through out our 4 day stay the bathroom door remained unfixed.

There was a rat in our room along with three lizards and a millipede. My mum and I shared the queen-sized bed and the following morning my lips were swollen and my mum's right eye was swollen. Something on the bed had bitten us. We informed the staff to clean our room but the rat remained in our room till the day we left the cottage. So you can imagine the restless nights we had.

None of these matters were fixed till we left the cottage. The so called safety deposit box in our room was not working either. The day of our checkout, the flush in the toilet ceased working. Overall it was a completely unsatisfactory stay. This was especially so given we had made full payment ahead of our check-in. You could easily find other places to stay in Amed which are more value for money. We were incredibly disappointed with the cottage and the fact the owners did not follow up and enquire whether the issues had been fixed.

We sorry to hear your stay was unsatisfactory.

We are aware that upon your arrival late at night, there was a problem with a lock on the bath room door. As the staff present at your arrival time is not trained to make general repairs, he offered you an identical room as alternative. This you refused, leaving our night staff without further options.

In the morning the bath room door was fixed by our day staff and 1 of the 2 locks on the bath room door were working OK during your stay.

We’re using a up-to-date rodent control system I hotel / around our but occasionally a live mouse is sighted. When so, our staff takes additional action.

A millipede is part of living in the tropics, esspecially during the rainy season. These little creatures come in from the trees in our garden or from the soil. They are easily removed by using a tissue to pick them up. This was done by our staff when the millepded was spotted.

There are no bed bugs at our hotel, We maintain a high level of hygiene and bed linen (and towerls) are changed bi-daily. Swollen eyes are usually an indicator that either the air conditioner has been set too cold or blowing too hard in the direction of a person.

The safety deposit box in your room was working fine after the batteries were changed. There a manual near the safety box for our guests to read and use the info accordinlgy.

Amazing place on the hill just across the road from the beach. Service is impeccable and food is also excellent and reasonable. Only four or five cabins in total. The pool is quite small but beautiful. They organised a masseur to come to our room and were very helpful in all ways.

We stayed here with friends who were previous guests, and we were impressed with the wonderful view from the rooms and the pool area. However, that was the only real positive. The rooms, although generally clean, are in need of renovation, (apparently, new bed spreads were provided recently) and the bathrooms are very stained, and the build up of soap grime is appalling. They need major renovation. The stone tiles around the pool are very eroded and are dangerous, and the limited sun lounges are in poor condition
The restaurant food is generally quite good, but expensive compared to other local prices, and the cost of soft drink cans is ridiculous at $2.20. (local price is less than $1). Visa facilities are available, but cannot be relied upon as the connection is frequently down, and there is no manual backup available. As the closest ATM is over an hour away by expensive taxi, this can be very inconvenient and costly.
We did not see the owners at all during our stay, and other long term guests indicated that they live and work in Denpasar, and now only come out for a quick visit every few weeks. I think that the Bayu is suffering severely from lack of owner presence and interest, in both maintenance and staff attitude, and is slowly but surely in decline. It is overpriced in its current condition.

Thank you for your review.

True, this hotel is far from the newest in Amed. However, all that’s advertised and required to make a guest’s stay comfortable in both the hotel in general as in the guest’s rooms is well maintained and serviced. Rooms are cleaned / serviced on a daily basis, bed sheets and towels changed every other day, hot water works, air con works, TV and satellite signal works, Wi-Fi works, in-room safe deposit box works, etc., etc.

Instead of opting for a major renovation, the choice has been made to change / service or renew hotel facilities / amenities one by one and only if hotel occupancy allows so. The minor issue with the sun-loungers you’re referring to, has been dealt with. Also, some guest’s rooms have recently been refurbished and redecorated. The removal of built-up calcium deposit (not soap residu) on taps, showers and hoses is part of the bi-monthly cleaning programme.

A comparison of the prices of food and drinks at our formal and fully licensed restaurant with informal, unlicensed and family-operated small businesses in Amed, is one we will always loose. However, we hold our CSR high and prefer to be a responsible business that’s truly licensed, our workers are paid well and have workers insurances and other benefits, and pay taxes to the government instead of running an illegal business with underpaid workers.

Correction: the most expensive canned drink at our restaurant is a 330ml can of beer, Bir Bintang, and costs Rp. 18,500,- ( = US$ 1,65 / AU$ 1,72) + 10% mandatory government tax.

Correction: The nearest ATM is located not 1 hour away from our hotel, but just 15 minutes away in the village of Culik. Soon one will open in Amed village, only 10 minutes away.

Our wireless credit card payment option depends on signal from a GSM antenna. Sometimes, that signal disappears due to whatever reason, and affects both us as well as the clients.

The owners do live in Denpasar and usually visit the hotel / restaurant twice a week, and also spend the weekends and school holidays there if their other business / activities allows so. However, due to many of our guests doing outdoor activities during daytime the owners sometime don’t meet some guests at all, especially with the guests who stay 3 nights or less at the hotel.

We've been there twice: in 2011 and 2012. At first we were looking for a hotel at Amed that also provide PADI course, fortunately the owner of Bayu is a PADI instructure (a very good one!). When we told the owner that we will bring our 7 month baby with us, they offered us a baby crib for free, they even borrowed us a baby tub since they only have shower in the bathroom which was kinda difficult to use it for a 7 month baby. The room was large with straight view to the ocean and to the mountain on the left side. They also have tv cable. The food was delicious: ayam bakar is my favorite!

What impressed me the most is how friendly all the staffs are. On our second visit which was on a year later, they welcomed us as if we were just been there few days ago. They even still remembered my son so well. It felt like being welcomed by our own family. Lovely!
