Description: Bali Asli is located in Gelumpang village, near the town of Amlapura, the capital of Karangasem regency, in the North East of Bali. About 2 hours drive from the airport, and 30 minutes from Candidasa village, and 30 minutes from Amed village. Nestled in the foot hills of Mount Agung, Bali's most sacred mountain, surrounded by rice fields, there is not a building to be seen. Bali Asli promotes Balinese cuisine and culture without exploiting it or it's people. We embrace our community, supporting those who fish, farm and forage in the near by fields, ocean and jungle. Our menu offers authentic Balinese food using a traditional Balinese style kitchen, cooking on wood-fired, mud brick stoves, allowing the real flavours of Bali to shine. Most of our ingredients are either grown in our garden, in our neighbour's garden or purchased from the local market The cooking school runs unique classes themed on "a day in the life of..." every class includes an adventure into local areas off the beaten track. Weather it is learning how to plant rice or plough with a cow, fishing in a jukung canoe and cooking on an open fire or making cocktails from cashew nut wine, our students always leave with fond memories and new skills to experiment with when they get home.

OK, I'm about to go into adjective overload. This place is soooooo worth the trek (we came over from Legian),

The views take your breath away and the food is sublime. The chef is inspired by whatever is fresh that day from the markets, from the sea of from someone's garden and the result is a meal where spices blend perfectly to create a taste of Bali that is quite unlike anything you may have had before.

We came the long way via Semarapura and Sideman. Take the time to stop and see some of Bali's history along the way- and be blinded by more green than you can ever imagine.

Oh, and at Bali Asli? You have to use the toilets...that's all I'm gonna say :)

We really enjoyed our cooking class at Bali Asli. Thank you Penny for being so welcoming and insightful. The food was incredible and the produce deliciously fresh. I think we were very lucky to have done a class so soon after you opened as I have no doubt soon enough the classes will be packed!

Bali Asli is run by Australian Chef Penny Williams whose passion for Bali's people, culture and cooking truly shines through everything from start to finish. The walk through the Amlapura market was 1 of many highlights, the benefit of having a english indonesion speaking chef take us through the market was fantastic giving advice of what you can take home & what you can't, and also explaining the medicinal benefits of all the herbs & spices is something I have wanted to learn for a long time and something that you cannot put a dollar value on. Everything about Bali Asli is high class - the staff, cooking lessons, the view (especially the bathroom) is second to none. This out of the way (but worth the scenic drive) 5 star cultural culinary experience is a MUST for any die hard foodie & also the one who wants to learn more about the Balinese culture.
Thank you for your knowledge and inspiration Penny, our friends will be truly amazed when we get home to create a Balinese feast for them utilizing the skills you have provided us with.

My sister and I did the 'Day in the life of a Balinese Lady' experience and LOVED it! Penny was so welcoming and had a wealth of knowledge to share through the market tour - not just about all the food (tastes, touch and smells) but of Balinese traditions, and it was great to hear it from someone who has experienced the ups and downs of assimilating into village life. We did not see another tourist at the market so felt we got a real 'taste' of Bali.

The view from Bali Asil can not be captured in a photo - it simply takes your breath away. In agreeing with other reviews - the toilets are very special!
The staff are friendly and a feeling of tranquility makes it a hard place to leave.

The cooking class was so much fun and I learnt a lot - and the food tasted incredible!

Thanks so much Penny for sharing your special place with us, as well as all your knowledge and experience.

We will definitely return to Bali Asli and recommend anyone heading to Bali not to miss it!
