Melasti Legian Beach Resort & Spa
Ranked #63 of 87 Hotels in Legian
Reviewed 9 June 2009

As the title suggests, the Melasti is in a prime location on the doorstep of Legian Beach. It sits amongst the large legian resorts such as the padma, jayakarta etc.

Considering the rates of the hotels surrounding the Melasti, you simply cannot get better value for the location.

The rooms were extremely large and comfortable. Well appointed, but not plush. Some people might consider that the rooms are old and need a bit of a revamp, which seems to be code for "I didn't like the traditional balinese style of the rooms". I however found the rooms fine, clean and comfortable while quite basic.

I stayed in the oldest style standard rooms available at the Melasti and I also had the opportunity to look into one of the newer rooms up on the wing overlooking the lap pool near the reception. The newer rooms were a lot smaller but not plusher at all. The newer rooms (obviously) had newer tiles and felt a little more "light" although this could have been due to the fact simply that they got more light because of their location.

The bathroom was very large and clean. The only thing which I could point out was the fact that the shower curtain was very long and dragged along the floor of the shower so there might be an issue with mould etc, but there was not any on mine.

The main pool served its purpose and had a really good swim up bar with cheap cocktails and food. The other lap-style pool also had a swim up bar and was a lot quieter than the main pool. However, the sun disappeared quite early in the afternoon and it became quite cold - so the main pool was the busiest in the afternoon. For those looking for the party atmosphere around the pool, this is not your hotel. The pool was always more family orientated. Also, you had to be careful with the side ledges in the pool - they were not of a uniform width and the edges were quite jagged - potentially a safety issue. Overall, the pool atmosphere was more family orientated than anything - a wading pool was incorporated into the main pool at one end, so families could all enjoy the pool at once!

The staff are lovely - the gentleman that would clean our room each morning was very pleasant and would always have a chat. The reception staff were always friendly and accommodating. You can leave your room key there during the day while you are out so you dont have to carry it around with you. There is also a money changing facility at the hotel - always reliable and good rates - we always changed our money here - no point wasting your time trying to find another reliable money changer.

The spa was excellent - very reasonable prices. Approximately $12 AUD for a 30 min massage or foot massage. Also have hairdressing services which I didnt use, but saw other people using and it seemed very good.

The buffet breakfast in the morning was good. I had heard lots of people saying that the breakfast was less than average, but I found it great (and I am a fussy eater). There is a great variety - cereals, fruits, pancakes, omlettes made to order, sausages, nuggets (interesting breakfast item!), hashbrowns, bacon, eggs made to order, toast, pastries, jam, butter etc, juice (including guava and orange), tea coffee etc.

We never had dinner at the melasti, but they were advertising their buffet dinners quite heavily. I walked past a few times and it was a very traditional balinese style buffet.

A quick 5 minute walk up the beach and you are in the heart of all the beachside legian restaurants. I ate at seaside three times and the food was fantastic and very very well priced. Quite a large selection of gourmet style western foods, contempory indonesian and basic western foods for those with a sensitive tummy. Give the pumpkin ravioli and the greek pizza a go!

There are three computers available for use by guests. You have to purchase access to the internet in 30 minute blocks. From memory it was quite reasonable, but probably cheaper in an internet cafe. If you need it just to check your email etc, its fine. There were some issues with the computers during my stay - one wasnt working and the others were quite slow. Not sure if they have been replaced. Being a family hotel, sometimes had to wait for the little kiddies to finish up on facebook, myspace etc before you could even get to a computer. But honestly, you are in bali! get off the computer and enjoy it!

Overall, a great value for money hotel - good choice for budget conscious families who want to be assured of a clean, basic hotel without skimping on facilities and in a fantastic location.

What a disapointment, We had booked this Hotel for five nights for a family group of ten. After arriving at around one in the afternoon we were checked in and shown to our rooms all five couples meet at the restaurant within 20 minutes for lunch all had the same opinion get me out of here. Our room was leaking water from the ceiling and smelt moldy, my daughters room smelt of cigerette smoke, the other 3 rooms rangeing from aircon not working properly to leaking bathrooms. We ended up canceling the hotel on the spot and booking another hotel that afternoon. This hotel needs some serious money spent on it, this is an outdated tired rundown Hotel. Cheers Steve Western Australia

My husband and I along with 2 other couples spent 11 nights at the Melasti Beach Resort in Legian. We went back there because we had stayed there in June 08 and loved it. We took our friends there for my birthday and I can't rave enough about the service and effort that was offered to us by the managers and staff at the hotel. My husband and best friend organised a beach party out the front of the Melasti and the staff took all day designing and arranging a party that will never be forgotten. We arrived there at 5.30pm with a lot of other friends who also had come to celebrate. The Melasti Hotel photographer who was so professional and clever took over 100 photos of our group. He managed to take some really memorable shots, so we were wrapped. The entire holiday was so fantastic that we have already booked to go back to the same hotel with our daughter AGAIN.. in January 2010. Thanks to all of the staff who are like friends now at the Melasti. My girlfriends and I also spent a lot of quality time in the Melasti Day Spa attached to the hotel. It was so well organised and the service brilliant.

I read some of the reviews posted about the Melasti before we arrived in Bali and was so pleasanly surprised at how terrific the hotel was. We had a lovely clean BIG room, the staff were just beautiful and the service excellent. We had alot of fun around the pool bar as we were with our family members. The breakfast was fine, lots of food and plenty of fruit. There were some rowdy aussies the second week we were there but the hotel security made sure they quietened down. I think you would get them wherever you stay in Bali. Overall the Melasti was in a terrific location, the rooms were good, the air conditioning was great in our room and we would recommend this hotel to anyone who is not expecting a 5 star resort for a 3 star price.

We have just returned from another trip to Bali and once again went to the Melasti Beach Resort in Legian - but this time we stayed in the suite cottages. The Cottages are large especially for 2 of us but it was lovely to have the space. We had a room on the second floor just behind the restaurant which overlooked the playground. The music from the restaurant/bar finishes at 10pm and after this it was quiet and because of the the small lounge area at the front of the cottage which has a door between it and the bedroom, we never heard any noises even in the morning.

Have only a couple of gripes 1st - not enough pool chairs - the chair wars became a daily occurance. We moved some towels once and waited to see what time the people would come back and they did not come back for 4 hours. I think everyone needs to be fairer when using the chairs around the pool. A lot of people used to put their towels and books, bags and sometimes shoes down at the chairs before going to breakfast, this is extremely selfish and you deserve to have your things removed.

2nd gripe is the amount of service charge and tax that you only pay at the restaurant bar. We ended up at the bar at the front of the hotel because the charges are getting stupid.

Apart from that, thanks to all the staff especially our mate Panji - C'monn!!! we had fun with you all, the rooms are kept lovely and any extras like towels or extra water are not a problem for the room boys. Would definately recommend the spa to anyone - the massages are great and if you stay 14 days at Melasti you get your massage as complimentary.

And thanks to the staff of Virgin for the lovely flights and extra legroom with the blue zone seating. You have made it even more affordable to go to Bali.
See you all again in about 6 months, am just planning my next holiday and cant wait to go back.

Very disappointing first impressions of Melasti Beach! After a long flight and arriving in the evening at Melasti we had to haul our luggage ourselves out of the taxi and carry them to our rooms. The standard room we were given was situated right above the bar and we immediately asked to be moved to another room... which, thankfully, wasn't a problem since it was low season. What also left us with a bad feeling was their hotel staff that brought us to our rooms began soliciting his services for tours before he departed. It became uncomfortable for the rest of our stay whenever we would see him in the lobby, where he would inquire where we were going and what we had been doing. The front desk staff were also not attentive when we had to drop off room keys when leaving the hotel property. We had to periodically wait for them to finish their conversation with each other before being dealt us. Breakfast was ok since there was a lot of fruit and they had a person preparing eggs to order. The other items available were either mediocre and/ or cold.
The beach was a huge disappointment. We understood it wasn't a swimming beach (more surfer friendly) but the litter and garbage that washed up was disgusting. It could of been the time of year we were there but the amount of plastic was astonishing. We didn't even want to walk along the beach let alone learn to surf in it... which was one of the things we wanted to do while in Bali.
I also wouldn't recommend this hotel if you want a quiet place to relax. We had a 11 year old travelling with us so the kids in the pool weren't an issue. It was the loud Australians that had set up camp around the pool bar that made it difficult to enjoy our stay. This was our least enjoyable hotel during our stay in Bali, we also stayed at Saren Indah (Ubud) and Nusa Dua Beach Resort (Nusa Dua).
