As the title suggests, the Melasti is in a prime location on the doorstep of Legian Beach. It sits amongst the large legian resorts such as the padma, jayakarta etc.
Considering the rates of the hotels surrounding the Melasti, you simply cannot get better value for the location.
The rooms were extremely large and comfortable. Well appointed, but not plush. Some people might consider that the rooms are old and need a bit of a revamp, which seems to be code for "I didn't like the traditional balinese style of the rooms". I however found the rooms fine, clean and comfortable while quite basic.
I stayed in the oldest style standard rooms available at the Melasti and I also had the opportunity to look into one of the newer rooms up on the wing overlooking the lap pool near the reception. The newer rooms were a lot smaller but not plusher at all. The newer rooms (obviously) had newer tiles and felt a little more "light" although this could have been due to the fact simply that they got more light because of their location.
The bathroom was very large and clean. The only thing which I could point out was the fact that the shower curtain was very long and dragged along the floor of the shower so there might be an issue with mould etc, but there was not any on mine.
The main pool served its purpose and had a really good swim up bar with cheap cocktails and food. The other lap-style pool also had a swim up bar and was a lot quieter than the main pool. However, the sun disappeared quite early in the afternoon and it became quite cold - so the main pool was the busiest in the afternoon. For those looking for the party atmosphere around the pool, this is not your hotel. The pool was always more family orientated. Also, you had to be careful with the side ledges in the pool - they were not of a uniform width and the edges were quite jagged - potentially a safety issue. Overall, the pool atmosphere was more family orientated than anything - a wading pool was incorporated into the main pool at one end, so families could all enjoy the pool at once!
The staff are lovely - the gentleman that would clean our room each morning was very pleasant and would always have a chat. The reception staff were always friendly and accommodating. You can leave your room key there during the day while you are out so you dont have to carry it around with you. There is also a money changing facility at the hotel - always reliable and good rates - we always changed our money here - no point wasting your time trying to find another reliable money changer.
The spa was excellent - very reasonable prices. Approximately $12 AUD for a 30 min massage or foot massage. Also have hairdressing services which I didnt use, but saw other people using and it seemed very good.
The buffet breakfast in the morning was good. I had heard lots of people saying that the breakfast was less than average, but I found it great (and I am a fussy eater). There is a great variety - cereals, fruits, pancakes, omlettes made to order, sausages, nuggets (interesting breakfast item!), hashbrowns, bacon, eggs made to order, toast, pastries, jam, butter etc, juice (including guava and orange), tea coffee etc.
We never had dinner at the melasti, but they were advertising their buffet dinners quite heavily. I walked past a few times and it was a very traditional balinese style buffet.
A quick 5 minute walk up the beach and you are in the heart of all the beachside legian restaurants. I ate at seaside three times and the food was fantastic and very very well priced. Quite a large selection of gourmet style western foods, contempory indonesian and basic western foods for those with a sensitive tummy. Give the pumpkin ravioli and the greek pizza a go!
There are three computers available for use by guests. You have to purchase access to the internet in 30 minute blocks. From memory it was quite reasonable, but probably cheaper in an internet cafe. If you need it just to check your email etc, its fine. There were some issues with the computers during my stay - one wasnt working and the others were quite slow. Not sure if they have been replaced. Being a family hotel, sometimes had to wait for the little kiddies to finish up on facebook, myspace etc before you could even get to a computer. But honestly, you are in bali! get off the computer and enjoy it!
Overall, a great value for money hotel - good choice for budget conscious families who want to be assured of a clean, basic hotel without skimping on facilities and in a fantastic location.
