“dirty dirty dirty”
Reviewed 22 July 2008

The rooms were just so dirty. I was scared to touch anything. But apart from that, it was a nice stay. The bathrooms in the rooms were nice and gardens also nice. I would recommend it if you didnt mind too much about hygiene.

This was the third time we have visited Bali (for July school hol's W.A) and the first time with our kids aged 16. 14 and 11. We have stayed all three times at the Padma. Our last visit was five years ago in 03, only six weeks after the Jakarta bombings.
This time around I did some research into staying at other locations but can't get past the Padma in legian for it's convenience, proximity to the beach and being able to walk out of your hotel and shop (ie not have to jump into a taxi to find somewhere to eat or to buy a t-shirt) we particularly wanted all this as the older kids would be able to have a bit of independence if they wanted to. My travel agent tried to talk me out of staying at the Padma for the reason that it's expensive when you can stay cheaper in the area or go more upmarket and stay out at Sanur or Nusa Dua. I'm glad to I ignored her!
Overall it's an exceptional hotel/resort and have enjoyed each three visits. It is looking better than ever. The gardens are absolutely magnificent. You would never have thought the hotel was full apart from at breakfast and around the pool.
We booked two family rooms in the block which were ground floor, No availability for chalets (which we have stayed in previously). We were comfortable and rooms were clean and well serviced. Bathroom not as nice as in the chalets. The hairdryers (wall style) are complete crap and the shower surged between hot and hotter which was nuisance. I forgot to ask the older boys if theirs did in the room they had but they didn't mention it! You were supplied with 4 bottles of complimentary water continually. The last night we had noisy people above us (group of young guys) which woke us up and had we been staying longer I think this would have pissed me off! That could happen anywhere though.
The pool area is good, very large but also busy. Yes people get up early and reserve their spot by the pool. if you are later than 8.00am you may not get one. Breakfasts are excellent and although the dining room seemed full after 8.00am ish there was never any shortage of food. The staff very attentive.
As I said the location of the hotel is brilliant, right on the ocean (cross over the 'road' , although only foot traffic here) and very close to eateries and shopping. We ate along most restaurants in Jalan Padma and did not have a bad meal anywhere averaging about $40.00 AU for the 5 of us. Shopping here is as good as anywhere in Kuta without all the traffic. We weren't interested in the department stores so didn't go to Centro. The padma has markets which set up around the pool a couple of evenings of the week also which is handy if you don't feel like going out. While there i also went and checked out the Kamala Pantai in Legian as a few people had said it was good and much cheaper. I wasn't overly impressed. The room I was shown was clean but looked grubby (walls and furniture) and concrete balcony not that attractive. From my very quick impression staff seemed non-attentive (10 min's to get service at front desk when I walked in). and lobby was ugly. Pool area OK although gardens not a patch on the padma. I saw a visitor wheeling his own luggage to room and this would never happen at Padma where the staff will not let you do anything.
Having thought long and hard about where to stay i am very glad we came back to the Padma and I wouldn't bother staying anywhere else if I went back.

First trip to Bali paid $1.50 a night for “Losman accommodation”; Since then have stayed in several cheap to moderate rated hotels in Legian area, all positive stays; this year upgraded to The Padma. Length of stay, 15th – 25th June in Deluxe Chalets (1 King, 1 Twin) with request for interconnecting rooms. Late arrival, 11.00pm at Hotel Reception, offered 2 X Twin Chalet rooms, 1 ground and 1 first floor above each other. Reception apologised and explained that Interconnecting rooms are subject to availability and check next day for available vacancy. With such a late check-in I was not surprised about vacancy issue and was happy to sort out next day. Checked with Reception 1.00pm and transferred to Interconnecting Chalets following day. Padma is a large hotel complex and it must be difficult to juggle so many “Guest Room Preferences”. With a smile and some patience, things do get sorted out.
Chalets are spacious, with tasteful décor; quiet air-conditioning that does cool, large clean bathroom (Tip: wet clothes dry faster in bathroom o’nite with door closed than out on balcony), and yes agree with previous review, one of the best hotel beds we have slept in. Cleaning staff maintained rooms in good order and are always happy to act on any special requests. Nice touch was having beds turned down each night. Had no hesitation leaving, “Thankyou Tip” at end of stay.
Complimentary breakfast is fabulous, huge selection, Bella Rosa and Tenkai are worth experiencing for that special dinner with some exceptional dishes offered, however with drinks can be an expensive night. Plenty of cheap eats in surrounding streets, Wali Warung, Legian Snacks, Posers and Wayan & Friends worth a try, plus plenty others.
Gardens are postcard perfect; a stroll at night is magical, new garden ponds mentioned in earlier review looking really good.
Swimming pool is magnificent, and we always managed to claim a lounge, although prime positions poolside do go early, preferred the hill overlooking beach, which can be accessed through rear entrance.
Car hire (with driver) easily arranged at reception, not as cheap as outside hotel but more convenient and we were able to negotiate fair price. Blue Bird Taxi always available, ask at desk. Even Hotel Exchange Rate compared to money changes outside is reasonable.
Thumbs Up!!!!!!! To Padma and Staff, who always greeted with a smile. We'll be back next year.

We stayed at the Padma in February this year for 2 weeks and loved it (refer earlier review), we booked to stay again in the last leg of our 19 night trip for 8 nights 5 – 13 June.

We arrived from Lembongan Island at the Padma @ 4pm to be advised our room was not yet ready (even though we booked and paid in full 6 weeks earlier). We spent the next 3 hours at the Club Lounge waiting for our room and receiving very little drink service in the lounge – we actually gave up trying to order a drink, and receiving no advice about our room until we chased them up about it. The poor drink service seemed to be due to too many guests for the singular bar staff to manage.

After finally being taken to our Garden Club Chalet the disappointment really set in. The bathroom was covered in black mould and the view from our veranda was of the construction site (new garden ponds). !Next morning I enquired about changing rooms to a Junior Suite – no problem, “will be ready soon”. Some 36 hours later, still having not unpacked, we finally moved to the Junior Suite which was roomier and cleaner and of course, more costly.

Down to the pool after breakfast, what a joke with the pool towels covering 95% of loungers and yet nobody on the loungers for hours.

Breakfast at Bella Rosa was good as usual, although I did note that most mornings there seemed to be what looked like tiny fruit flies all over the fruit display as well as the breads. Also at Bella Rosa I would order a cappuccino each morning to which I had to pay extra for.

We did not bother returning to the Club Lounge for the cocktail hours the rest of our stay.

Laundry costs seems to have doubled since February, and that was after requesting three times in one morning for a laundry bag and list.

Room cleaning (for which we always leave a daily tip on the pillows) was extremely poor for the duration.

We had breakfast in the main dining area one morning due to leaving early for a bike tour, and I ordered a cappuccino which never appeared, nor was offered any tea or cofffee.

I was pleased to leave the Padma and will not return. It was a very different experience to that of our stay in February 2008 (was there a change of ownership???) The Padma was very poor value and appeared cheap and dirty this visit.

We also stayed @ Laguna, Nusa Dua and Batu Karang, Lembongan Island on this trip and would readily return to both of these resorts.

Hotel Padma is amazing! The photos really do not do it justice. We arrived and were instantly blow away by how beautiful the lobby was. The staff was so friendly and always helpful. The included breakfast was amazing. The trip started with big plans to go out and be adventurous, but the hotel was so great that we ended up lounging around. There's a wide array of people staying there, from all over the world, families, couples, singles, etc. I will most definitely stay there again.
