“A 'period of adjustment' required before settling in...”
Reviewed 30 July 2010

As a solo traveller, this fairly budget accommodation was booked on the recommendation of various reviews read prior to travel. I paid $65US for a deluxe garden view room, including breakfast via the hotel direct. (Various websites offer the same room a little cheaper, but none were available at the time of my booking).

Wedged between the Melasti Beach Resort & the Puri Raja Hotel, the Sari Beach Hotel (formerly Sari Beach Inn) is well positioned on the Legian beachfront.

The hotel is small (maybe 20 rooms) with typical, well-manicured tropical gardens. A long, narrow laneway leads down to the hotel entrance from the road. A low wall & gateway run parallel to the beachfront at the back of the hotel.

The Deluxe Garden View room I stayed in was room 112 & situated next to the kitchen. As a result, kitchen noise could sometimes be heard in the bathroom of a morning. More affecting however, were the whining cats & kittens who nightly would invade the roof space of my room & wake me.

The room consisted of a large canopied king size bed, dressing table & stool, small table & 2 matching chairs, TV unit housing TV & DVD player. (The DVD had a whirring noise, which required the volume of the TV to be increased). From the main room, you enter a small dressing room with cupboard/shelves & room safe. This area opens to the bathroom. In it’s day, the bathroom was probably quite glamorous with a large spa bath (no longer working) with a wood surround. The wall has shelved lights, which look like candles. There is a shaving mirror attached to the wall beside the vanity.

The spa jets are in need of bleach since they have ‘greened’. The smell of mould is slight, whilst bathing. There is a hand-held shower nozzle only so bathing & holding the shower nozzle over you are the only options. The mirrors are tarnished, worn & chipped. A connecting door is located from the dressing room/bathroom to the room next door. Conversations & safes opening can be heard between the bathrooms.

On several occasions, the WC would not flush adequately, the hand basin’s waste outlet would close & not reopen without manual intervention. This required the opening of the cupboard beneath the handbasin – one handle missing on cupboards & the area was damp, dirty & with the smell of mould. There was no hot water on one occasion (this was remedied after some time).

There is no phone in the room however they are available at Reception.

A walled garden in front of the room provided privacy, with a small balcony with table, chairs & towel rack overlooking the garden.

The hotel pool is clean & adequate for the size of the hotel. Two massage ladies frequent a corner of the gardens & are available to provide massages on the sunbeds in the lawns of the hotel. Music/noise from the adjacent Puri Raja Hotel could be heard at the pool area of an afternoon. Music could be heard from the adjacent Melasti Beach Hotel of an evening in the pool/dining area.

Breakfast is served between 7-10am daily. Eggs anyway, toast, fruit, ham, cheese, coffee/tea. Basic but satisfactory. Other meals are available throughout the day from the small hotel dining area however I cannot comment on other meals provided.

A freestanding ‘sheltered hut” bar within the grounds of the hotel has ‘Happy Hour” each afternoon with drinks at half cost.

The staffs were friendly & attentive, soon knowing me by name. The main clientele noted were German. The menu & room instructions were written in both English & German.

With refurbishments, this hotel could be a real gem, considering it’s location & the boutique size establishment that it is. Unfortunately, it’s lack of maintenance & dated furnishings let it down.

I needed a ‘period of adjustment’ before truly settling into this hotel & to be honest spent several hours on the internet in my first days seeking alternative accommodation, which did not eventuate during the Peak Period.

I would recommend this hotel as basic, (nearly) comfortable accommodation only if restricted by budget. Personally, I would prefer to pay more & stay somewhere a little more upmarket.

We were a little worried after having booked this hotel, beacause of the less than favourable reviews on Trip Advisor, but were pleasantly surprised. The hotel is small (only about 20 rooms) & quiet - even though it is literally sandwiched between 2 bigger hotels.

We started in a 'superior' room, which was too small for 2 ladies (who are not a couple), but upgraded to a 'deluxe' room, which was larger & had a small table & 2 chairs inside the room which the 'superior' did not. We were upstairs & could hear the waves crashing on the beach at night & got the breeze when we sat outside. The smaller rooms had a private walled garden which would be nice if the weather wasn't so humid (no breeze).

We found the staff & other guests were all friendly, contrary to other reviews. We had many conversations with guests & staff. The hotel had mostly German guests, so much so that part of the restaurant menu was in German. Breakfast was ample - we did not need to eat lunch while we were there!

The 'in-pool' bar was not operational & didn't look like it had been used in some time, but there is a bar very close to the pool which opens early & closes late.

The hotel is directly on the beach, great for an early morning or late afternoon swim, & within walking distance to shopping in Jl Legian & Melasti.

The majority of guests were middle aged or retired. Great if you want somewhere quiet to relax, but would not suit someone looking for nightlife at their hotel, but the Melasti next door could accommodate you with that. Occassionally at night we could hear singing from next door, but not enough to be a disturbance.

Overall, a great experience, there wasn't really anything we didn't like (except for the humidity & the hotel didn't have any control over that!)

Great position on the beachfront and the gardens are gorgeous and so nice to relax there to escape people trying to sell you stuff on the beach. Breakfast is fantastic, lots of fruit and pastries. Pool was spotlessly clean each time we went in as were the grounds. Staff were amazing and so friendly- I cannot understand what others are talking about when they say they were not friendly (possible just impolite tourists?). Yes the staff are very laid back but certainly catered for every need we had. Rooms- yes they are old but keep in mind you are paying $30.00 AUS per person for a night! I think people are kidding themselves if they expect a 5 star resoprt for that price. If you want to spend alot of time sitting in a hotel room dont go here. If you want to explore the beautiful country that is Bali and see the sights - ie only use the room for sleep then it was perfect for us we werent there alot. We had a blast and have booked in again for this year.

We stayed in room 114 garden view from 5th Noc-21st Nov. The room was spacious, airconditioning unit rattled . Bathroom cleanliness was 1 out of 10.
The pool area was nice ,couple of days there were not enough sunbeds for all the guests. Breakfast was fine but limited, you could order eggs & bacon, pancakes.
A good variety on menu for lunch & dinner.
The beach is right outside the front gate ,great for getting away from the sometimes crowded pool area.
The staff were wonderful, very friendly & security on premises 24 hours.

The Sari Beach Inn is a little resort at the beach of Legian. The rooms are in little cottages with garden view. Some rooms have a terrace, some have a garden. Our Deluxe room was on the upper floorand we had garden view from the terrace, and a little seaview. We had a huge 4 poster bed, marble floor and a marble bathroom. Everything was neat and clean, everyday fresh bedsheets and if you like new towels. The pool is tiny but pretty, there are sunchairs and pooltowels free of charge.
There is a little walkway between hotel and beach. You just step out of the hotel, walk 5 meters and you are directly at the long beach. There is no streetnoise as this hotel is at the end of a little alley away from the traffic. But you only have to walk about 2 minutes and you will find many shops and restaurants.
Service was nice but a bit slow, extra wishes where no problem. Breakfast is a bit frugal as you get toast, eggs, jam, coffee or tea, juice or fruits. Or you can order the indonesian breakfast, which is fried rice. However, the quality was very good. Balinese coffee is excellent, the fruits were sweet, the fresh pineapple jam was yummy. One morning I tried the fried rice and it was delicious. We never had any other meals there, as there are many beach vendors which are selling fruits or fried noodles etc. and there is a huge selection of restaurants in every price range.

The Sari Beach has not too many facilities and they do not provide the fastest service. But if you like small resorts with a nice garden and a good atmosphere – this is your place!

We go to Bali twice a year on average. We usually stay in Tuban, at the other end of town, but wanted to stay in Legian. We had seen photographs of the wonderful gardens on the net. The grounds are really beautiful! The location is great, right on the beach, and near to all the good restaurants.
BUT, & this is a big one, the staff are very unfriendly. We arrived at 11pm on Saturday night, and not one person had bothered to reply to our good mornings, until Thursday pm. In Indonesia this is unheard of!
When we asked what other choices were available for breakfast, the staff lied. This changed once the germans accepted us, all of a sudden other choices were available!
The staff were incredibly rude and surly. The one exception to this is the room boys, who did an excellent job.
The staff were excellent at watching the television, as this is what they did all day. They were generally too interested in the television to have a conversation with you.
The vast majority of other guests were german, who had no interest, and possibly no english, in conversing with us. After the first week, we met a nice german couple who took pity on us, and introduced us to all the other guests, so that eventually people and the staff did speak to us! WE WERE THERE FOR A WEEK before anyone would respond to our good mornings. We attempted to speak to the owner, who grunted at us.
I couldn't recommend this hotel to anyone. It was such a disappointment.
