“Remote location, lethargic staff, too much trash”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2014

We stayed for only one night in the Abalone Resort and were disappointed after having read predominantly postitive ratings on TripAdvisor before.

Here is why:

- The location is in the middle of nowhere - this is by no means the fault of hotel management, however: Other hotels on Bali have successfully taken advantage of their remote location to create a virginity-like, paradisiac atmosphere - not so much here.
- In most areas, the resort seems uncared for - withered plants, ants everywhere (esp. by the pool), trash lying around, childrens toys being stored in the (dirty) toilet by the pool bar.
- Staff was not unfriendly but somewhat lethargic. For example, lights were switched off in the restaurant while we had not even finished drinks - this was around 8.30 pm...even before it seemed like they were drooling for the last guests to finally leave so they can go home
- Room was ok, but bathroom was not well-maintained - and I actually don´t like cheap shampoo bottles from the supermarket in hotel rooms - at least refill it to a neutral container...
- The small beach right in front of the hotel is very rocky (not the hotel´s fault) and there´s trash lying around everywhere (this could actually be taken care of by some of the staff that is, for the most time, sitting around by the bar, without having anything to do).

Food in the restaurant was good but not better than in any other average Warung on Bali.

Overall, we would not stay there again. For both those seeking for recreation far off from civilization or a nice hotel as basis for daytrips/adventures on Bali, there are numerous better maintained options in nicer locations at similar prices.

I stayed here with my family in july 2013. The resort is located a bit away from all the other resorts in the area, which makes is a very nice place to stay. Is is right next to the beach with high waves to surf and a pool area for smaller children. The rooms are nice and very clean and not to hot at nighttime and from the terrace you can see the sunset and sundown. The staff is very familiar and nice and the food especially the drinks and vegefood is good.

Room Tip: Amazing location, many activities, high waves to surf, double rooms with terrace are nice

A paradise hidden in the jungle you could call it. Beautiful, big nice waves to swim in, very nice staff especially. The hotel can arrange a snorkling trip for you wich is really beautiful and the food and their drinks are so delicious especially the greak salad, their chips and their daiquiri

We stayed at Abalone Resort in the rainy season and were given a wonderful cottage with ocean view. Our bedroom upstairs was so cozy, we never wanted to leave. In our 2 weeks of Bali, during which we stayed in more than 8 hotels, this was the one with the most beautiful room.
The location is secluded and quiet, with a beautiful stretch of rocky, volcanic black beach right upfront.
Food is delicious and served in large portions, and the host is wonderful and will make you feel at home right away.

We stayed here for a couple of tranquil and generally blissful days. Marion wasn't there but the service was still excellent. Good food, clean, airy rooms, lovely garden, nice pool and several canopied beds to loaf about on. There had been a lot of rain before our arrival so the beach had debris on it - but I think this is a common problem in Bali. Only a short boat trip away from good snorkeling.

Abalone Resort was a great find for my husband and me when an ATM ate our bank card. As we waited for the ATM crew to make their next call to Candidasa, we relaxed under Marion's expert care. She helped us in many ways to retrieve the errant card but actually made our stay with her a highlight of our holiday in Bali. We would go back again tomorrow! The villa was lovely, the food delicious, the pool and garden delightful. Marion and her staff were wonderful and we would recommend Abalone Resort to anyone who is going to Bali to meet the people and see how they live rather than to rub shoulders with other tourists.

Room Tip: There is a "modern" style villa if you prefer it. We liked the traditional style of room...

In Mangiss, very close to Candidasa and the White Sand Beach, Abalone is the perfect hide-out for singles, couples, small family groups. With four sea-side bungalows, pool, ocean-front bar/restaurant and a private stretch of black sand beach, Abalone is far from the maddening crowds of Kuta. Marion, from Germany, is a warm, lovely "hostess" certain to make your stay enjoyable. Off the beaten path, a bit difficult to locate from main road, Abalone is a very intimate, private setting, perfect for R&R, a small wedding, honeymoon or a solo (like mine) stay.

Room Tip: With only four bungalows, you can't go wrong @ Abalone. All but one have ocean views. All have t...
