Take your time and walk around the square, take in the history, the old buildings. Picture yourself walking the square in early America.

Born and raised in Independence I was always proud of my hometown, known as the Queen City of the Trails West. Left in 1954, returned in 2004 to a virtual TRUMANVILLE.
The town should have retained its focus on its historic value, not a passing president.

Some of my favorite buildings were gone. The beautiful stone facade of Bundschu's Dept. Store, the majestic stone architecture of that corner bank, Chrisman-Sawyer's, and of course, the big brick hotel on the northeastern corner of Maple and Liberty.

Beautiful old buildings should not be replaced with sleek modern ones on a historic court square! That's incongruous. What were they thinking? Now where Bundschu's was there's an ugly boarded front that's inexcusable. In place of the old hotel and small shops on Maple, there is (God forbid) a PARKING LOT. On the townsquare a parking lot??? Couldnt believe my eyes. And next to it, in place of the little shops--or was it Kresge's?--an unattraactive theater! At least the theater could have been designed in retro style to complement the historic value of the square!

I returned in 2009 and was at least relieved to see that the concrete low wall around the courthouse had been removed. It had been an eyesore and an unnecessary one. Lastly, why on earth would the town fathers allow mini-skyscrapers to be erected on the square? When I saw what had replaced the First National Bank and Chrisman-Sawyer at Lexington and Liberty I was agape. Where were the people who should have stood up for the preservation of some antiquity in our town? Independence is as important historically as Philadelphia or Jamestown and many others in our U.S.

I kept apologizing to my son for the letdown after I had been building up my hometown so many years. It used to be so beautiful and Norman Rockwellesque. We did scour Iowa and Missouri in our travels to view as many townsquares as we could and bless his heart, he did say our Independence courthouse is the most stately and attractive one he saw. I wholeheartedly agree.
