Owner description: President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

I must've learned about Truman in school but this site opened my eyes to a man of humble beginnings who held on to his core values while dealing with two major wars and a fast-paced world. An amazing achievement. The house is set up as if Truman just walked out the door. The stories of the harried secret service agents will make you smile. Truman's life story in his cousins house across the street is also well worth the visit.

“Truman Home”
Reviewed 6 September 2012

One of the best tours available in the Kansas City area (Independence). Everything on the exterior and within the home has been preserved so that anyone touring feels as if they are going back in time. Very interesting and well worth your time. Be sure to call ahead for information. Geared for mature teens and adults.

“A good look at a great president”
Reviewed 2 September 2012

The visitor center is downtown, while the Truman Home is a few blocks away. The Home is really interesting, but limited as to the access of the entire house. The Noland Home across the street has just recently been renovated and is a great exhibit. The Truman Farm is almost 20 miles away, in Grandview, so not too convenient. It helps to know something about Truman before visiting, but it is not necessary.

“Truman's Modest Pre & Post Presidency Home is something to see!”
Reviewed 20 December 2011

No matter what your political position, the Truman Home in the heart of Old Independence should be added to your tour of the area. Most will be amazed how modest this little house is compared to the extravagance of today's presidents! There are scheduled tours of the home, which can be purchased at the Visitor's center, adjacent to the Old Marshall's Home and Jail on the town square.

You will walk a few short blocks from the visitor's center to the actual home. (This is an easy walk, which most people should be able to do.) Make sure you're on time, the park ranger begins promptly at the scheduled time.

The tour, overall is quite short...approximately 15 minutes from start to finish, but can be extremely informative, depending on your guide. I've done the tour several times throughout the years (two times while in high school). An important note: you will not be allowed access to tour the second floor of the home - it is reserved for the family. Also, you cannot wander around the home on your own, this is a structured tour with a clear path you must stay on. Be sure to ask your guide plenty of questions...that's where the real info emerges. There are trinkets, gifts, etc. in each room you see and there's usually a story behind each item.

If you are looking for an opulent mansion, this tour is not for you. If you are looking for a charming bit of history, then you won't be disappointed!
