Owner description: President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

If you love Harry Truman and want to include this in your trip to the Truman Library, it's worth seeing, but it won't take you longer than an hour to view it. It's interesting to add to a day of activities. The best time to see it is holiday time when the decorations are interesting.

“Harry Slept Here.... A LOT”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

The house has endured several upgrades and been fixed a lot over the years. It is awesome to come and visit this place... whether you particularly like President Truman, or not! The house is almost ALL original, and the tour is wonderful, insightful and funny. Very cool to see such an intimate side of the President and 1st Lady - and this is a presidency before Dealy plaza; before Vietnam and Watergate. I rank Truman about 12th of the 44; but this historical site is a "must see" in Independence. It is linked with the local jail (1854) where several notorious prisoners were kept and events happened... as well as the NPS site which shows a movie and often has displays from the Truman Presidency in the lobby. As they say in the Midwest: GOOD BEANS!!

“Excellent”
Reviewed 11 November 2013 via mobile

The visit starts with a short video about the Trumans which was very well done! Visitors are then directed to the house a few blocks away. Note that there is no dedicated parking lot;you can park on the street. Our tour started on time which is always a plus. The guide was knowledgeable and interesting. Wish that we could see the second floor of the house but understand that would be difficult; also wish the other three houses hadn't been closed due to budget cuts! but are impressed with the job the Park Service is continuing to do here.

“The amazing Truman Library”
Reviewed 31 October 2013

Each presidential library has a good lineage of the events and decisions that were made in their presidency. One can not be over whelmed (regardless of party affiliation) to see the majors decision he made from the dropping of the Atomic Bomb to the Korean War. Though I have visited 6 presidential libraries I have yet to see the breadth and magnitude his discussions have had on our history

“History is very interesting.”

Very interesting to see the house where Harry S Truman and his family lived before, while he was president and after. Amazing that he lived so simple and frugal.
