Owner description: President Harry S Truman took America from its traditional isolationism into the age of international involvement. Despite his power, he never forgot where he came from. Today, visitors can experience the surroundings Truman knew as a young man of modest ambition through his political career and final years as a former president.

We took the tour given by the Park Service. Excellent tour that truly shows how the president lived out his days here. He had to have been one of the few presidents that was from common folk.

“Truman house”
Reviewed 30 June 2014 via mobile

Be sure and review the NPS www before arriving so that you follow ALL the rules -
specifically no weapons so leave your massive 1 inch pocket knife that Grandpa gave you in the car so you are not committing a felony.
Go to the NPS center downtown to get tickets to tour the Truman house - no tickets available at the house - tours limited to 8 people.
No photos allowed in the house
You must turn off your cell phone

You will enter through the back porch, then an original 1950s kitchen that was never updated, move to the dining room, then into a vestibule where you can see the music room, sitting room and alcove for the phone. Stay on the carpet and do not touch. Next you are ushered out the front door to the gate and street - about 12-15 minutes. You only see the first floor.

The Ranger guide is knowledgeable about the house and pleasant.

You do not tour the grounds and only see Harry Truman's car at a distance parked in the garage.

Overall all a nice visit if you are going to be close by but I would not drive a significant distance for the experience.

“A pleasure and surprise”
Reviewed 30 June 2014

We visited here kind of on a whim to fill time and were very pleasantly surprised! The house is not what one would picture a former president living in. The tour is for a small group, which was very nice, because it felt more personal. The tour guide was knowledgeable and personable. We would definitely go again if we are in the area.

Very nice visit back in time. Great to see the house as it was left by its residents. They were down to earth and their decor showed it. Nice jewel fir all to see.

“A visit back in time”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

This is a tour worth your time if you are at all interested in the Trumans, or in how we lived in the mid to late 20th Century. The house is really a preserved time capsule, willed to the people of the USA by Bess Truman, and cared for by the National Park Service. Tours are limited to 8 visitors, you can't touch things and must stay on specified areas. But our Ranger guide was expert and dedicated, and nothing is roped off. The house is almost exactly as it was at the time of President Truman's death in 1972. Truman was frugal, so the house wasn't improved with all the latest gadgets during his lifetime although it's a good old home. From the 1950's kitchen, to the book-jammed study, to the front rooms and hall, it's a visit back in time. For me, the most poignant item was Truman's light colored fedora hanging with his walking stick and coat in the front hall, looking for all the world as if he'd just come in and put them there. We could stand within inches of those things although of course we couldn't touch them. I'll probably tour this house again someday.
