Mariah and her staff gave us a wonderful and delightful stay in her stauning B&B for 3 days. Beautiful surroundings and lovely, idyllic villa. Hospitality is very charming. We had wonderful times with other guests during breakfast and dinner. Mariah had organised some wonderful tours in this center part of Bali. Perfect inn-keeper, lovely lady. If you do have the intention to write a book, this is your spot! Mariah thanks for 3 great days.

All the positive comments I read before going there... I was wondering. But it is all true! The place is wonderful. In the middle of the jungle, on the edge of a deep slope stands the beautiful house. The rooms facing the slope are huge, luxurious and very clean.
Wastra is away from it all, but Mariah and Bob see to it that their guests are happy. They organize a driver for the sightseeing trips, give some tips for local walks (hanging bridge, rice-paddy's, local villages...) and serve excellent food in the morning and evening! Great variation and quality. We stayed for 8 days and every evening Mariah had a different range of plates on the "rijsttafel".
In Wastra we felt at home! Style, care, taste, beauty and intelligence... where else can you find this combination?

I think this is simply the nicest place I have ever stayed, and I have stayed in some gorgeous 5 star hotels. The rooms are extremely large, very elegant, and comfortable. the Villa itself is a beautiful, tasteful home (really more like a small palace) set amidst the lush greenery of northern Bali. There is a view of the mountains and a fresh breeze all day long. Our Indonesian hosts, Mariah and Bob, were incredibly generous and kind, as well as extremely interesting and knowledgeable. The food is home cooking from fresh local ingredients, absolutely delicious. We had a truly magical time.

Room Tip: All the rooms are beautiful, and each has its own huge veranda for outdoor living.

We spent 4 days in Villa Wastra and it was truly amazing! We had very high expectation for this place and it simply beats all of them! The wonderful owner Mariah & Bob were an excellent hosts and they made our stay as comfortable as possible. I would definitely say that this was one of the best home stay that we have stayed.
Wake up, open the bedroom curtains, you would be rewarded with excellent views of the nearby mountains misty forests with chirping birds and tons of butterflies. Nestled away from the crowd, this is an excellent location (yet nearby to major attractions) if you want to get away from the busy life and wind down totally. The entire place is well maintained & clean rooms, built in an excellent setting with lovely interiors & arts. Mariah & Bob with their love for Bali has built a truly amazing place. If we go to Bali, we will definitely stay here!

Morning breakfast was such as a delight to look forward. Us being Vegetarians, Mariah & their excellent cook took extra effort to make sure we were comfortable & fed well.

It could be bit difficult to locate this place, so ask Mariah for clear directions or have your driver talk to her.

This place is hard to find, so they offer an inclusive pickup (certainly if you stay 3 nights, anyway). This is usually from Denpasar airport, but they were happy to swap this for collection from our Candidasa hotel. In fact, it is located just a little north of Payangan, which is a few miles north of Ubud. Because of traffic, the journey to Ubud can take 40 minutes each way; although we never used a local taxi for a single journey, expect to pay $10 (which we negotiated). It is often better to just hire a car and driver for the day - Villa Wastra's (independent) preferred driver charges around $50 for an 8-hour day.
The place itself is essentially a private mansion. The owner is a lovely lady, who told us how she built the property with her husband in 2009 to encourage her children (who work overseas) to return to Bali for holidays. I believe that family still use rooms when they visit, and, in fact, email correspondence for booking is actually with the owner's son who lives in Canada.
The rooms are massive and luxurious, as are the ensuite shower rooms (no bath tub). Each room has a sitting area, kitchenette and balcony. The balcony overlooks the valley (the house is at about 1200m elevation, I believe). I think it is actually the other side of the same valley as Ubud Hanging Gardens (which is reasonably close, but not worth the trip for the bar - Ubud is much better, and only a little further in total travel time). The height means no A/C is present, but it isn't needed at all (certainly during July 2012 anyway).
While it is feasible to make food in the kitchen, there isn't a lot of utensils provided, so I wouldn't recommend doing that, unless staying for a long time. Maria's (owner) cooking is excellent, and she just needs about 12 hours notice for dinner at $10 per person. She also adjusts menus depending on preferences of her guests staying at the time, Nevertheless, I personally only had dinner there 1 night, going into Ubud for other 2, which I would recommend. Breakfasts are very nice - and plentiful.
I can't recommend this place enough. It's brilliant for couples and families alike. Just go.

Room Tip: I think they are probably all similarly amazing... But the Endek Honeymoon suite is perfectly suitab...

We recently stayed for 3 nights at Villa Wastra and had a really nice time. Maria and Bob are wonderful hosts and the room we had was fantastic. The food was also amazing. As other people have said the property is a little isolated but if you fancy a few days with a good book and fantastic views then you will not be disappointed.

We had high expectations of our stay at Villa Wastra as it had been recommended by friends. We were not disappointed. The location is stunning, and the villa and gardens beautiful. The rooms are exquisitly decorated and very spacious with hugh, comfortable beds. There was more than enough room for the 2 extra beds for our children (Geringsing suite). What makes Villa Wastra really special is the wonderful hospitality of the host and owner Mariah. The extra special touches such as the gift for Mum's birthday and the special Indonesian celebration meal made our stay truly memorable. The breakfast spread on the terrace overlooking the jungle is a sight to behold, and Mariah's fabulous local feasts at dinner mean that you don't need to venture our for local cuisine (kid friendly food also provided for less adventurous youngsters). Also the availability of car and driver as well as suggested tours ensured we got the most out of our trip to Bali. A trip to Kintamani and Mount Batur volcano and a swim in the hot springs is a must). If you are looking for somewhere very special, away from the busy south end of the island, we highly recommend Villa Wastra. Thank you so much Mariah, we will be back!

Room Tip: We had Endek and Geringsing suites and both provided superb views of the jungle and distant volcanoe...
