Very good option for those who seek tranquility and spectacular views as opposed to noisy discos and overwhelming numbers of cars and people in Bali. Mariah and Bob are excellent hosts who take care of their guests as if they were members of their family. The Villa feels like home the moment you step in. There are only few rooms avaialble, therefore it cannot be crowded. The food is excellent and abundant, we highly recommend to taste Mariah's multiple course dinners. The premium rooms are huge and beautifully set. The garden rooms are smaller but very nice. Everything is done like you'do it for yourself, not for renting to tourists.
The Villa is rather secluded, so in traffic jam transfer from the airport can take a couple of hours. If you're looking for lively nights out, discos, etc. - this is not your option. But if you need a getaway and spectacular landscape around - this is your place. Such places are hard to find in the age of hotel chains an all-inclusive offers. Villa Wastra is excatly the opposite. Note that getting around to Ubud or Batur volcano or any other location, you need to arrange for the transportation - and hosts can help with that.

I had not checked any of the booked accommodation from our travel agent and approaching Villa Wastra along the dirt and bumpy road through the jungle, I started wondering what we had got ourselves into. However all thoughts of uncertainty were quickly dismissed when we arrived to experience the sincerely warm reception of our Indonesian housekeepers, the palatial home and the spectacular views.
The home is truly palatial with its guest "rooms" being more like self contained apartments in size and with all marble floors, all stone walls and wooden or stone sculptures and paintings wherever one looked. We soon started referring to the home as "the palace".
And then we met our hosts: Bob and Mariah. They did everything possible to make our stay enjoyable and provided transport, meals, sightseeing tips but above all countless stories of the Bali and broader Indonesian experiences.
The meals were wonderful starting with freshly squeezed juices from the property (mango, coconut, papyia, sour sop) and then freshly baked croissant and other pastries, meusli, rice, fruit, omelettes, etc.. My favourite was the freshly roasted and brewed coffee from the property.
Our visit to Villa Wastra was the highlight of our Bali holiday and I can wholeheartedly recommend it if you are wishing to visit the cooler mountain regions of Bali. It is a world away from the heat and crush of Kuta.

I wanted to give my Parents a once in a lifetime experience, in their first tour of South east asia. They dont travel outside India much. Hotels are very impersonal and are more relevant to business travel, on a holiday, I wanted a place that would expose them to local cusine, great people to talk to and of course a brilliant view, some peace and world class living facilties. To say that Villa Wastra was all of this is an Understatement.
Mariah and Bob, were super friendly, very learned and good natured, we felt at home right away.

The views that the Gringsering room offered of the green Bali Jungle and the views of the mountains in the distance, took our breath away. Over all i would recommend Villa Wastra to all who are looking for a relaxed holiday in Bali.

We stayed at Villa Wastra for 10 days in August 2010. Its situated about 30mins north of Ubud in a totally lush setting, overlooking a deep valley all on its own. This place is a find. Recently built, so its new, tastefully decorated, the main rooms are more like mini apartments with kitchenette, and the views are amazing. There are very few places nowadays where you look around and cant see another building anywhere wherever you look, and this is one of them. Ubud felt like hustle & bustle after Villa Wastra! At night all you can hear are the sounds of the forest and the stream hidden way below. There is a suspension bridge which spans the valley, and I looked to see if I could spot the stream but couldn’t – its that lush.

Mariah took good care of us, every morning at breakfast we had something a little different, from pancakes, to the odd omelet or Balinese specialties like the Balinese type porridge which was yum. And the fried bananas ofcourse. In the evenings we usually had dinner in Ubud, but on occasion if we were too tired to sit at a restaurant we would call and some supper would be arranged for us back at the villa, usually some tasty Balinese dish. I enjoyed the fresh juices in the morning, the coffee was good (local – think its their own), what more could you want?

We had a private yoga session up on the main veranda which overlooks the valley, totally peaceful setting for it. You can arrange for a yoga instructor to visit, we found a few in Ubud who were willing to come up for a one on one if that’s your thing. You can walk around the area through villages that don’t see tourists much to the amusement of the locals, and generally the whole thing felt private, exclusive, quiet, I mean the feng shui of the place works.

As far as transport goes, we like to drive wherever we go, so after being put off by the guide books, we gave it a shot. It wasn’t actually that bad. You just expect the millions of mopeds to come at you after a while so you just go slow like everyone else. All the kids ride mopeds to school as well by the way, so beware when school ends, they all come out at the same time on their scooters! The marching school classes down the main street were also a problem but hey, be patient. If driving yourself is not your thing, you can arrange for a car/driver setup if you want to roam around. The villa itself is actually half way between Ubud and the Kintamani area where the volcano is. Ubud is quite a large area so even if you stay in hotel like the Alila you still have to rely on a shuttle to get to Ubud central. Even if you stay in a hotel like the Alila you still have to rely on a shuttle to get to Ubud central.

So if you want the hotel type room service go to a hotel. If you want something more private, personal, a hideaway or to chill out go to the villa. It has to be one of the best B&B’s I have come across.

Thanks for a great stay

Everything about this place is superb. In our opinion perfectly situated 30 mins drive north of Ubud on a hill with fabulous views across the valley to wake up to. The climate is cooler and more welcome than that lower down the valley, yet Ubud is easily accessible. Mariah, the owner was welcoming beyond all expectation and the hospitality here is unrivalled. As there was no one else staying we were upgraded to a huge suite, immaculate in every way. The whole villa has been beautifully architect designed and built on several levels, with attention to detail everywhere from the carved stone wall panels and wooden pillars to beautiful painted ceilings. Breakfast contained more than enough and we felt guilty that we couldn't possibly manage it all. We especially loved the deep fried bananas in crispy light rice batter. Here is a place ideal for total rest and relaxation. As you are quite isolated you have to be able to enjoy your own company, which suited us well, but a taxi can easily be arranged back from Ubud which is what we did one night after taking in a show, though eating at lunchtime is a much more manageable affair. Mariah told us of a ceremony in the next village where food was being blessed, so being quite keen walkers we went to experience it. It was a beautiful walk with many photo opportunities. I don’t think tourists went that way often -we were a bit of a spectacle I think, but people didn’t mind us standing outside the temple watching the proceedings. We felt very spoiled at Villa Wastra, having the pool to ourselves and being invited for lunch, and I think with more guests it would be just the same and even more sociable. I guess this is not the place to come if you feel comfortable with the anonymity of hotels and having everything easy on your doorstep. This is a place for an independent traveler, someone looking for something just a bit special, a bit out of the ordinary.. and PS: keep it a secret as when we return we want to find it just the way it is!
