“A sanctuary in the middle of Bali's forests!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 October 2013

My wife and I stayed in this hotel for four nights in August 2013. Ubud Hanging Gardens is beautifully situated on a hillside with the lobby being at the top and the rest of the hotel below the lobby level all the way down to the valley. Nonetheless, guests are not required to use stairs as the hotel has two lifts to carry guests.

We booked the Panoramic Deluxe Pool Villa but were upgraded to the Panoramic Pool Villa Suite courtesy of American Express Fine Hotels & Resorts. While the room was very nice by any standard, I wouldn't quite rank it up there with other premium brand hotels. I sensed that they lacked attention to detail when it came to interior design. Also, our suite was at the top of the resort, which also means that we were closer to all the noise that was just outside the resort's walls. This includes a rooster that woke up at 4am every morning made sure to wake everyone else up with it. Other than that, everything else was great and above expectation.

The staff were wonderful, friendly, and helpful.

The spa, in my opinion, was average at best. It is at the very bottom of the resort by the valley right next to the river, which made a wonderful sound effect. But that's where the positives end. The massage was below average. The room was cold, which left me shivering most of my session.

The resort didn't have a gym, which I found strange since they definitely have the space.

Internet is free but most of the time there was little or no service.

Notwithstanding the above, I still thought that the resort deserved an excellent rating. The natural setting alone is something to be seen.

Room Tip: Rooms at the top can be noisy in the early dawn from dogs and roosters.

One of the best hotels in the world and amazing service!!! Rooms overlooking the lush valley were immense and food even better. From start to finish a brilliant experience.

Ubud also a nice chilled town And worth popping into if you get time.

Can't wait to go back!

I didn't actually stayed overnight so I can't say anything about the rooms, but back in early August, I spent a couple of days in and around the restaurant taking hundreds of photos of the luxuriant vegetation and the breathtaking scenery set in the tropical forest. Food and wine were absolutely gorgeous, and so were the swimming pools especially at night.

The main dining area is located opposite a temple perched on the opposite side of the mountain and the view from the terrace is unique. The first time I visited the hotel it was fairly early in the morning and the weather was quite grey as it had rained part of the night, the hotel and surroundings were hidden in a kind of mist which, when it gradually cleared up revealed the astonishing natural beauty of the place. A spine tingling kind of moment.

From check-in to check-out we loved staying here. Each villa is beautifully appointed and the entire resort is perched on a mountain ridge overlooking trees across from a temple that seems to defy gravity. Swimming in our private infinity pool was surreal. Add fabulous service and the experience was first rate. The resort is about 30 min from UBUD center and we enjoyed its secluded setting. If you want night life and action this isn't the place for you. I hope we can return one day!

Room Tip: I don't think there is a bad villa inthe place but the higher the room the better the view. Requ...

Orient Express Hanging Gardens is a true jewel in the jungle. They have a 4 to one staff ratio and a funicular to take you up and down the valley. Most suites have private plunge pools and there is a spectacular pool overlooking the river. They certainly have the most exciting romantic dining possibilities including a private candlelit dinner at the temple across the river with a blessing ceremony by the monks, a total lifetime memory in the making.

Room Tip: All rooms overlook the luscious gardens. The pool villas are a better choice.

We stayed here to take a break from seminyak. The hotel, rooms, service and scenery are all superb. One struggles to think what they could do better. I especially liked the individual pool villas, which provide pure relaxation in absolute privacy. Staff go out of their way to be helpful. Travellers should realize that there is not much to do around the hotel, but there are plenty of tours to keep oneself occupied. Overall a wonderful experience.

We may be biased because we got engaged while staying at this beautiful hotel but it is one of the most fabulous places we have ever stayed. The location is just wonderful, about 20 minutes outside Ubud in the jungle, you can't help but relax the moment you arrive. The villas are massive and we loved the private infinity pool. The restaurant is wonderful, with a varied menu and exemplary service, in fact the service throughout, from every single member of the team, was brilliant and really made our stay. We were greeted by name by most members of staff and everyone we came across was unfailingly friendly and could not do enough to ensure we enjoyed our time in Ubud. We highly recommend the romantic dinner in the Hindu temple across the valley, which was made particularly special by the excellent service we had from our chef for the evening. The spa is also fantastic and provided the most relaxing location for a massage imaginable. One tiny niggle is that the complimentary toiletries in the villa lacked the luxury factor you expect from a hotel of this quality (with the exception of the lovely Balinese soaps).

Room Tip: Villas higher up the valley have better views.
