We really wanted to do this hotel as part of our honeymoon because of the iconic pool and because at the time it was part of the Orient Express hotel family (so good food and good service pretty much guaranteed).
When we came to trying to book (around a year ago) we found the hotel was no longer run by Orient Express and had changed management, we still decided to go ahead but limited ourselves to just 1 night.

We had a lot of trouble with organisation when trying to contact the hotel which resulted in us taking transfers from the hotels we stayed at before and after instead. There was a lot of confusion around trying to book one of the special romantic meals ahead of time too.

The hotel location is issolated in the hills and forests a relatively short distance from Ubud and the views from hotel and our room were excellent. Our private pool was heated and offered a great view, but it should be noted these private pools while being infinity are not sculpted in the same way as the main pool (the ones in all the photos) and this misslead us slightly at the time of booking. The villa pools are not large enough for swimming in, just for relaxing, which is worth mentioning.
Compared to other hotels we stayed at this was the only hotel where our room was not 'private'. Its very possible for villas higher up to slope to see onto your patio/pool and neighboring villas pools do point straight at the bedroom window of their neighbor on one side.

We took both lunch and dinner at the hotel (there are no other options in walking distance). Lunch was good and the view from the restaurant overlooks the iconic pools and valley. Dinner unfortunately was less good, we were supposed to have a romantic meal on a floating island on the main pool but due to rain this had to be cancelled (which was just bad luck with the weather) but the only contingency plan was to eat in the main restaurant or in the room (which wasn't that interesting as the pool takes up the only good view on the patio). As we had been planning a romantic meal that night I decided to go a bit extravagant and take the $75 Wagyu beef and shrimp. I'm pretty sure they don't really expect anyone to order this and its only on the menu to make the other meals sound like better value as it was one of the most disappointing meals I've ever had, overcooked shrimp, unseasoned beef and just generally underwhelming.
Plus points were good waiter service and complementary honeymoon cake.

A final point is when retiring for sleep I kept getting a very strange smell when I lay down, I eventually found this was coming from the pillows which smelled like dirty water; not very pleasant.

Conclusion: Worth seeing for 1 night, check your pillows and consider other options for dinner.

Dear Matthew,

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us at Hanging Gardens.

We are glad you liked our unique jungle setting but very sorry other aspects did not live up to expectations.

The damp smell is one of the constant challenges of our very tropical garden surroundings so we do try to air all guest rooms prior to arrival and apologise for our failure to do adequately for you.

We have launched a renovation restoration program to improve the pool heating features and allow more sunlight to each of our Villa decks. We are truly sorry of this diminished the enjoyment of your stay and hope you will return to enjoy our improvements.

The peace and serenity of our location, a world away from the hustle and bustle of Ubud, is what most of our guests seek out, and we apologise if this location was not appreciated.

With warmest regards,

There are a few mixed reveiws on here so I will tell it how it is. I am a regular guy who ,makes a regular amount of money and had to save up for a while to be able to stay here for 4 nights. I have never experienced such high of standard luxury before staying at this hotel and probaley will not agian until I go on my honeymoon. Yes, there were a few minor issues such as 'bugs in the bedroom' but the hotel is in the middle of the jungle in Bali...What do you expect? People who focus on the negitves of this hotel either have far to much money or don't have there eyes open fully! There is no other way to discribe this hotel than pure luxury. Breakfast - outstanding, service - 2nd to non, staff - super happy, super friendly and super helpful, location/view - picture perfect, quiet and relaxing. If I won the lotto I would catch the first plane back to this hotel. Everyone has to stay here at least once even if its only for one night!

Room Tip: I stayed in room 25 it was quiet, far away from everyone else and very private!

My fiance and I are supposed to visit this hotel in October for our honeymoon - we booked the trip before the hotel changed ownership and now have not been able to reach anyone to confirm our reservation. All of our other hotels have gotten back to us within 24 hours, which seems like the right level of service for the amount we are spending. It's very disconcerting that we haven't heard back from anyone at Ubud (we've now tried 3 times to contact them) and are looking into somewhere else to stay. If the service is like this before we even arrive, it doesn't give a good feeling.

The Hanging Gardens Ubud hotel is a great place to stay. It's tucked away in the jungle right outside Ubud, with peaceful surroundings and amazing views. The villa itself had a comfortable bed, a nice indoor and outdoor shower, a large outdoor seating area, and an awesome infinity pool overlooking the valley. It was probably one of the coolest setups I've ever seen. As an added bonus, there would be local monkeys that occasionally be seen swinging by the room. The food in the restaurant was pretty delicious for dinner, but excellent for breakfast. The staff were very accommodating - we had a very late flight the day we checked out, but they allowed us to store our luggage and even shower up in a vacant villa before flying out. My only criticism is that the pool looks odd at night - it's a beautiful, unique pool, but they had installed multi-colored lights to light the pool at night. It honestly made it look cheap, when all they had to do was put simple yellow or white lights for the evenings!

My wife and I stayed at this beautifully located spot in June 2014. We stayed for 4 nights, a nice villa with private pool. Both my wife and I have visited the wider Ubud area quite a few times over the past 10 years, but first time to stay at this particular property.

Overall, our experience was genuinely a bit of a mixed bag. The location is wonderful. Whether simply relaxing and enjoying the view from the hotel or doing an early-morning mountain bike ride or trek in neighbouring countryside, this is a stunningly beautiful part of Bali. The food is of high quality - whether breakfast buffet or a la carte dinner. We also thought the service was generally very good, with many of the staff having been there for many years.

The areas for possible improvement may seem small in isolation but, in totality, suggest questions over attention to detail - particularly given their relatively high prices. Examples where we were a little surprised and wondered had standards dropped since the change of management last year: slow response times to email queries before check-in, transport to / from resort not that well organised, forgetting to clean room in morning or evening turn-down service, umbrellas made available for guest use sometimes old and shabby.

Overall, this is a lovely property with much potential. However, at this price range, we believe there is room to raise their game further.

Me and my wife came for the astonishing double-layered pool and it was amazing. One of the best swimming pool we have ever seen! we went down to the bar and pool area for an afternoon coffee and snacks, even though the price was expensive but the breathtaking scenery and relaxed atmosphere really worth the penny.

The hotel is nice and quite, panoramic pool villa is gr8t. The pool can be heated with extra $50/day but they heated only to 29' Celsius which is still cold.

Very expensive to book excursions or taxi or even massage in the hotel.

So do any excursions in Ubud. Companies like Sobek but little expensive, also Banting cycling, and Sari Profit for rafting.

But golden rule in Ubud bargain bargain bargain, anything can go down from 50 - 60%
