We stayed at Ubud Hanging Gardens for the first four nights of our honeymoon. The hotel was everything we hoped it would be and more. We stayed in a panoramic villa which was beautiful. The restaurant and the food was amazing as was our experience in the spa. We had a private picnic by the river which was really special and we couldn't believe how much lovely food there was. I just wanted to write and say how incredible we thought the service was in this hotel. From the moment we checked in we felt really welcome and couldn't have been treated better. Every member of staff from the reception staff through the cleaners, restaurant staff, spa staff and the people who worked the furnicular were so friendly and seemed genuinely interested in us having a great holiday. The personal touches at this hotel including the wedding gifts we received on our first day really set this hotel apart from others we stayed. Thank you to everyone at UHG for making our honeymoon so special! xx

We went for the first part of our honeymoon and it was just perfect. Service, friendliness, attention to detail - all could not be beaten. They gave us some free honeymoon treats which were fantastic. The spa is excellent, food out of this world, panoramic villa with private infinity pool just perfect (even for evening dips). Monkeys watched us watching them. The trips such as cooking lessons,& guided walks were excellent and to be recommended - don't eat before you cook because you eat what you cook. Itsa little way out of Ubud worth the distance for the setting - you overlook a valley and a temple on the other side of the valley. The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. They set out fresh local fruit in the rooms each day. Just such a luxury experience - treat yourself.

We stayed at this hotel after looking at the photos on the website and realizing that it is part of the american express fine hotels program which has never done us wrong. This hotel is in a beautiful spot, the views are absolutely stunning, the service was very good most of the time and the food was great. Due to the hotels location (and possibly the age of the hotel?) our room was very mildewy smelling. I was not able to put any clothes into the drawers because the smell was so bad. The AC did not work very well, there was monkey poo in our plunge pool for 2 days, a night the small creatures which crept into our room woke us up several times each night. Years earlier we stayed at the Aman property which is right down the road from Hanging Gardens and did not deal with any of these issues. I will again say that the view is worth a trip to the hotel but we would not stay there again. I just think that it needs a bit of a renovation, possibly a better AC system would take care of the mildew smell? I am surprised that this is part of the american express fine hotels system however.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights in September 2010. I would only recommend this hotel if all the following conditions are met:
- You have so much money that you do not care paying a lot of money for a below average service (rooms are very nice decorated, and the whole place has a nice atmosphere, but breakfast is totally below average)
- You want to be isolated from the rest of the world (there is absolutely nothing around this place unless you take a taxi/shuttle and go to Ubud)
- You like the kind of holidays: read/stay still/no sports

DO NOT GO if you like doing sports, walking, mixing relax with some entertainment/night life.

Rooms are very nice, but the pool in the rooms hardly has sun (so you cannot sunbathe by the "private pool"). The common pool is relatively small for the entire hotel, and there is not enough space to swim. There is not a gym in the hotel or any other facilities other than (an extremely expensive) Spa, and (an extremely expensive) restaurant.

A positive thing: they have books and films that you can borrow from their library.

Again, this hotel is good for very rich people that do not like doing anything but reading/staying still during their holidays.

The night we arrived it was pouring down a rain we would hardly ever see in Europe, to the extent that there was a small leak in the room. This however was an isolated incident. The room was beautiful with teak (or seemed to be) wooden floors and furniture. The bed was enormous and was at least two meters wide if not more. The large window from the bed had a view on the private pool and the jungle. As we stayed in a panoramic view, we could even see the temple on the other side of the hill. In the evening we could even hear mantras, sometime for a long period of time. Generally I would say the room is not fully sound proof and if sensitive to external nature sounds, one might get waken up during the night. The private pool was very cold at first but we called the reception and they switched on the heating. We could then happily swim even at night!

The restaurant is very good but ridiculously expensive. Count a good 75 USD per person for a starter-main-desert without wine. The food is French predominantly with some Balinese touch. We generally preferred eating out rather than at the hotel. Also we were a bit annoyed that the general manager only went to wait and speak to tables that took wine. Having said that, their breakfast is simply amazing!

The main downside of the hotel is its location as it is very far away from central Ubud. The shuttle from the hotel unfortunately finishes at 5 PM. It is always possible to call the hotel from the centre and they send a driver for a charge of 15 USD. Otherwise you can bargain a taxi from the center for 100'000 IDR.

Stayed here for 3 nights whilst touring Bali. It looks great on the website but we were slightly disappointed in the location. I had stayed several years previously in Kupu Kupu Barong so the comparison is probably unfair. However, our villa, which was pleasant and well appointed, was on the lowest tier of rooms down in the valley and consequently suffered from a lack of sunlight given the steep valley slopes. The plunge pool was never in sun and therefore cold and we could not sunbathe at the villa. This was compounded by the hotel pool which has a stunning vista but is very small and has room for only 4 or 6 loungers around the edge. The food and service here was good, and it was in a very quiet location with a lovely view of the tree-clad valley, but we would not choose this hotel again.

We stayed at UHG for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. We didnt arrive until 2200, check in was swift and seamless and the reception staff were very polite.
When we arrived at our panoramic pool villa, we were initaially very pleased. However, when we got changed to go swimming we were very dissapointed to find the pool freezing cold! We telephoned reception to inform them, and they said it would be fixed the following day. The following day the man didnt arrive to fix the pool until around 1500, and it wasnt warm enough to swim in comfortably until our last day. We were quite annoyed about this, as we had only booked 3 nights and only got to enjoy the pool (which was a major selling point for us) for the last day! We felt we paid far too much for the 3 nights when we only got to swim for 1. We went for dinner (which was very nice but very expensive) The setting of the restaurant was very romantic and peaceful. However we felt we got the hard sell on the wine list (which was absolutely extortionate) we felt we were made to feel at bit like cheap skates when we didnt order any wine.
Breakfast was rather dissapointing, and one day the fruit was covered in bugs, and we had to alert the staff. We realise the hotel is in a very naturel location, but surely they can think of an altervative way to protect the food from bugs!
One thing you should remember is that UHG is NOT in Ubud. This was not really a problem for us as we were only there 3 nights, but we still managed to run up a large taxi bill.
Overall, the hotel was certianly a very unique hotel and we did enjoy our stay. We think the staff should check the pool temperature daily so any dip in temp can be quickly fixed, we feel ripped off that our for over half of our stay our pool was unusable.
