“Unbeatable food and service, plus best shower in Bali”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2012

My friend and I stayed at this gorgeous resort for one night only but we left feeling like we had made new friends. We stayed in a garden room close to the pool and had twin beds, which were really high and really comfy, and the outdoor shower made us both laugh as it’s the best thing ever – you’re basically showering from the mouth of a huge stone gargoyle! The WiFi in the room was super fast and free – always a bonus.

We ate lunch in the beach side restaurant and the service and food were both exceptional. Try the burger with cheese and fries. I know it’s a western old-faithful but they do it so well. We had a great dinner in the other restaurant and my coconut chicken soup and curried fish dish were definitely two of the most delicious Asian dishes I’ve had in Bali. Try the Irish Coffee with cream afterwards, which the boys will wheel to your table and flame up into your cup right in front of you. Oh and the breakfast is a huge spread – try the bircher muesli, the homemade breads and also the homemade salami and ham. The salami was the best I’ve ever tasted.

My friend celebrated her birthday here and the staff were so lovely. They made her a cake which we had after both breakfast and lunch, and they also left a little note and a vase of flowers on our outdoor table for her. Sometimes it’s the little things at a hotel that make you want to go back. Well at the Matahari there was a series of little things that just made us fall in love with the place.

We both had a signature massage in the spa. The oils all smell incredible and the massage was great, but the spa itself is worth a look even if you don’t have a treatment. You can sip your tea by a huge lily pond, and if you’re on a honeymoon you can have the place to yourself and even sleep on the outdoor bed. Maybe one day!

As for the huge swimming pool, the sun-loungers around it were the perfect spot for me to catch up on some kindle reading, although there’s more of a breeze if you head to the beach and lie on a lounger on the black sand. You can also play giant chess, darts or talk to the dive staff about a diving trip to Menjangan, although we didn’t do that on our visit as it was too windy and we were a bit scared of the current!

I love the eco friendly efforts in place at the Matahari, they not only compost and recycle waste but they also recycle their water to use on the gardens during dry season. I think it’s important for places to make efforts such as this on an island that’s changing so quickly and buckling under the weight of all its development in other areas. I would recommend the Matahari to anyone travelling through Pemuteran, and who feels deserving of a little bit of luxury.

Dear Writesitedubai,

Best regards from Matahari Beach Resort & Spa.

Also on behalf of my entire team, I thank you for your nice comments and the beautiful pictures you have made.
I like very much the entrance of our Parwathi Spa. It's remember me a painting of Ketut Teler, a famous Balinese Painter from Gyannar.

It will be our great pleasure to welcome you again one day to our Paradise. In the meantime, please feel free to contact me at any time if you require any information.

Warmest regards from the North West of Bali.

Sampai jumpa!

this is a true luxury hotel with a spa as beautiful as any i have seen anywhere in the world. Its architecture would make Nero envious. Interestingly, also only spa i have been to in Bali where operators not Balinese {but European -as were most of the guests]. The hotel "rooms" are a series of bungalows, each containing separate rooms - all in Balinese style. The entrance to each room is via a large patio. The rooms themselves are in brand new condition. The Bedroom is large with a large four poster bed and ornate high pitched ornate wooden ceiling. Apart from usual hotel bathroom, there is an outdoor shower - novel but practical in the heat. The grounds are immaculately maintained and when i was there were a blaze of colors. The hotel is all by itself in a remote part of Bali - - if you want isolation, peace, quiet, luxury and beauty - this is the place - a destination in itself

We spent four nights at the Matahari Beach Resort & Spa, in north west Bali before setting off on a dive trip to Raja Ampat.

The resort is fairly compact and the semi-detached villas are spread between the main building near the road and the beach, with the more expensive ones further from the road. Each Balinese style villa is surrounded by lush, tropical vegetation which offers a fair amount of privacy. The villa consists of an air conditioned bedroom, bathroom areas and an outdoor shower. Ours had a large veranda with an outdoor dining area and sun loungers where breakfast was served to us each morning.

The spa is just gorgeous and the treatments good and reasonably priced.

During our stay the main restaurant was being refurbished, so we ate dinner at the beach restaurant. Expect to pay seriously high-end European prices.

The transfer from the airport by road takes more than three hours (when it's rush hour in Denpasar then even longer) and for this reason I would not recommend making the trip for fewer than three nights.

The villas, service, food, massage salon, etc. was 5-star. The dive shop concession was "okay". It's a beautiful resort that also has access to diving... not a dive resort.

A fabulous resort with fantastic rooms, amazing staff and beautiful pool and gardens.
The room was one half of a villa which was very private, spacious, beautifully decorated plus had a superb out door shower. The gardens were stunning and you hardly ever heard or saw any other guests apart from at the restaurants, which served lovely food.
All the staff was fabulous, including the manager who ensured all guest were happy and satisfied during their stay. The resort is built for total relaxation and every little detail was attended to, from chilled towels and fruit kebabs at the pool to turn down service in the evening.
If you'd like to experience total peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle in Kuta, this is a lovely alternative. We'd love to come back again.

Stayed for 2 nights at Matahari on a round trip of Bali. The location is also ideal for anyone coming from Java as well, as it's just a short drive from the ferry terminal at Gilimanuk.

Rooms: Stayed in a Garden View Room. Very Balinese - with a high Balinese four poster bed (you need a little foot-stool to climb up!). Wood carvings and Balinese paintings create a very local atmosphere. Loved the outdoor shower - the water comes out of the mouth of a stone carving. Overall the rooms are spacious and full of character with very large bathrooms and a separate vanity area. There's no tv's - don't worry - you'll feel happier!

Resort: The gardens are the best thing - so relaxing with the sounds of birds and insects and the smell of frangipani! Very tropical atmosphere. The pool is a great place to relax by, though during the day most people were by the beach.

Beach: OK, it's not the highlight - it's black sand but the sea is very swimmable.

Snorkelling & diving: Enjoyed snorkelling at the artificial reef which is just 15 minutes walk down the beach (or they'll drop you there). It's very good snorkelling there - loved it.

Dining: Loved dinner to the sound of the gamelan. Very atmospheric. Great service and a high standard of food. The beach restaurant is a bit more basic. Breakfast was very good too - good choice.

Overall really enjoyed staying here a lot - it's a beautifully maintained resort with lovely tropical gardens and a real Balinese flavour. Totally different to the busier areas in the south.

Oh, almost forgot, the spa is very impressive too.
