“excellent architecture and view, bad taste food!”
Reviewed 23 December 2011

the surya shanti villas are wonderful designed and perfect integrated in the nature. the view from the upper level rooms is fantastic, the interior is simply stylish, all in white and brown colours, really beautiful. only the food in the restaurant is not really good! bad taste and too expensive. (prices are exclusive 21% tax + service charge). It's a pity because with a good restaurant the surya shanti would be perfect.

We stayed at the Surya Shanti for 2 nights as part of our 10-day honeymoon in Bali. We went for top-notch accommodation in Seminyak and Ubud and we made the trip to Sidemen (which was out of our way), just to stay at this property. And we certainly did not regret it! We stayed in Agung 2, which had beautiful panoramic views and lovely communal outdoor space enjoying a wonderful breeze. Any of the Agung villas are beautiful but the top rooms have the most spectacular views. We also had a look at a couple of other rooms and could not fault them, although the Agung ones are more special. The staff were very friendly and gracious and even prepared us a honeymoon cake and petal bath. Gede - who works at reception - made our stay memorable. He is very charming and we wish him the very best :)

Couple of things to mention... There is a 3% credit card charge and there are no ATMs in walking distance so unless you have plenty of cash, be ready to incur the extra charge.

When we were there the villas were not full, so it was very tranquil and relaxing. However, the space around the 2 pools is rather limited so we think that if the place is full it will get rather cosy.

Lastly, the food that we tasted as part of the cooking class was delicious and very authentic, but the breakfast and a la carte dinner wasn't memorable. But the setting more than makes up for it.

This place is a hidden gem. Go before it gets too popular!

Room Tip: Top floor Agung villas enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.

This is a beautifully located hotel. our personal experience was not good, unfortunately, as upon our arrival we were told that our Gunung view room booked on their website had already been taken. As lovers of East Bali the pivotal experience is to experience the fantastic view of the awe inspiring Gunung agung which we first experienced when staying at the Sacred Mountain Resort some years ago. This relatively new hotel seemed like a good choice.
The room we were allocated resulted in one of my worst hotel stays ever:
1. cupboards FULL of mould
2. Toxic moth balls used liberally which made breathing and detoxing from our city lives impossible- we slept with all the doors and windows open.
3. fortunately, we had a mosquito net, but the fan was hardly working so we lay drenched in sweat on poly cotton sheets
4. Off course a shower etc. was out of the question as the water supply to the room was not functioning....

You get the picture.

fortunately the owners were very gracious and apologetic and did not charge us for the night. We did however have to check out as there were no other rooms available

I am sure that our experience was not the norm; the food was delicious and the staff helpful

Absolutely brilliant. I have been to Bali 5 times already and this is (together with Villa Blubambu in Seminyak) the best place I have ever stayed. The location is so beautiful it took my breath away. The villa (Rama) was fantastic. The space, the bathroom but most of all the view! Lovely staff and great food. Thank you SO much. Can't wait to go back!!! Thanks Sylvie!

We were in Sidemen and happened upon this fabulous property while walking. We changed our itinerary and stayed an extra 6 nights. The staff and management were outstanding. The property is owned by French and Balinese. The food was the best of our month in Bali. We thought the meal prices were reasonable for the quality. Both pools were surrounded by incredible scenery. You are living at the top of rice fields. If you are looking for peace, quiet, and beauty, the Surya Shanti Villa is the place for you. There is no problem finding a private driver to take you to the resort from anywhere on Bali. We cannot speak about the spa. It was being built when we were there. We know it has been completed. Be sure and take the included rice terrace walking tour.

Room Tip: Request Top Corner Room farthest from the restaurant area and facing the Rice Fields.

We stayed there 3 nights, and it was a really peaceful place. It starts with a welcome foot massage, together with the welcome drink, and it goes like this during the whole stay !
The breakfast is delicious and the staff is nice. The Spa is really nice as well, ans really worth trying.Even if the food is good, it is not that typical of the country and quite expensive....better try the small warung a little bit uphill...very good food and better prices !

First time visitors to Bali, after frenetic pace of tourist coast and even Ubud, we were somewhat relieved to spend our last 2 nights and 3 days in Sidemen staying at Suyra Shanti Villas. Sidemen represented to us, old, timeless Bali.

Surya Shanti sits high and is surrounded by the lush green terraced rice paddies with a view of Mt Agung. Villa's are sensitively designed and built and capture the spirit of the sacred valley and its culture. Using natural materials, polished stone and concrete and the traditional thatched roofs, the resort and its gardens are immaculate and spacious.

Food for meals is sourced from the local markets and organic garden. One of the highlights of our trip was the cooking class with Surya's Chef Bagus and Nengah (his assistant). Bagus took us to the early morning markets in Sidemen to explain the local produce. Our cooking class was in the purpose built, authentic Balinese kitchen. The fruits of our labour - 7 courses - became our lunch. We consumed it gratefully with a bottle of wine and retired to the beautiful infinity pool overlooking the rice paddies, for a nap and late afternoon swim.

Our room faced out through the valley to distant coast of Nusa Penida. In this eco-friendly resort, the rooms are well ventilated to capture the cool breeze from the valley. Bedding is fresh and the linen and pillows are lovely.

Clearly from this the reader will understand that we really enjoyed our stay at Surya Shanti. This is a great place for honeymooners. The staff are friendly and welcoming and we were fortunate in that they were able to accommodate a very, very late check-out on the day of our flight from Denpasar.
