“At One with the Natural Surroundings.........”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2011

Bali Mountain Retreat is located in a seemingly remote mountainous region of Bali, however surprisingly close to the action of downtown Seminyak! Located on a mountainous ridge overlooking the tropical jungles with views down to the Bukit, BMR is a unique taste of rural life in Bali. Richard the owner is a perfect host with an interesting past full of colour, travels and a life lived fully. The staff he employs are from the local village and are delightful and attentive in that gentle Balinese manner. The rooms are fresh and clean and well maintained, with free WiFi access and good amenities. All with a rustic mountain style using old teak. A lovely walk that we did was a few hundred metres up the road and down to the right along a well-maintained and paved mountain track to the natural springs. Pools have been built into the river with fresh spring water to cool off in.
I thoroughly recommend when you come to Bali to make the trip up the mountain to BMR and enjoy the peace and quiet! Oh and bring a jacket as it can get chilly up there!

I can't rate this place enough - one of my favourite places! The decor of the rooms is stunning, an edge of local flavour but with a modern/western comfort. The food is delicious. Richard, the expat who owns the lodge, is a rare find - an owner who cares personally about his guests and also cares for those local people he employs. THe location is remote enough to experience a different side of Bali yet in reality it is only less than hour up the mountain from the main road. I'd recommend Richard's driver guides too - knowledgeable and friendly. One of the drivers even made a return visit to the lodge for me at night because I had dropped my watch in his car.... such kindness and above the call of duty. The walks which are organised in the local area are also relaxing and a good opportunity for photos and culture. TThe massage I had was brilliant -Wow!!! I was lucky to find this place!

Ideal for those who seeks a stay in a tropical rainforest up in the one of the mountains in Bali -- where tranquility is assumed. BMR is a brilliant match of nature extraordinaire pampered lightly by some modern day living conveniences.

The retreat is naturally landscaped with lush tropical rainforest vegetation on terraced land. The architecture and building materials used are locally grown and found in Bali.

Lotus House, the only one and best-located bungalow on the fringe of the property promises a comfortable stay. There are two connecting rooms - a bedroom with a wall fan and a living room with a refrigerator, a CD/DVD player and a TV on a console table, a leather arm chair and a daybed. French doors open to the width of the verandah with two teak wood chairs and a table. Cool mountain breeze, sounds of the jungle and the occasional drizzle compliment the vegetative mood. If one chooses to be entertained, there is a library of DVDs and CDs available. And, Richard’s (the owner) musical talents, of course. Although en-suite, both the w.c. and the shower room have separate doors from outside the bungalow. But, modern conveniences of dual-flush sanitary system, hot shower, a washbasin and mirror can nudge this slight inconvenience back into subservience.

The restaurant serves simple local food and some vegetables are grown on their own plot. If you can speak some Indonesian, the chef may entertain your request.

Staff speaks some English, are friendly and obliging as they go about multi-tasking what needs to be done for the day. The receptionist is also your trekking guide and does gardening in between hours. Putu’s mother, one of a few masseurs, provides a good strong traditional massage for Rp.100,000 per hour. Various other massages are priced accordingly.

Wifi is available in the upper levels of the resort but cell phone signal seems unable to penetrate through the dense montane elevation.

From the airport it takes about 2 to 2.5 hr but about halfway through the trip and after passing the populated communities, the scene of rustic roadside villages, the vistas of beautiful, refreshingly green terraced rice-fields, coffee and cocoa plantations begin to unfold. As one gets up further up and deeper into the mountain, the road condition changes, gradually to a gravel one-lane road. These are signs obvious to those nature-seeking adventurers and a preparation for a feast of the eyes, a breath of fresh air, by which time, the noise decibel would have dropped to a humming level.

The food here was consistently wonderful, and the day trips to the coast by bike, and the rice paddies and Sarinbuana Village, lead by Putu, were fun and interesting.

One (minor) complaint: the Aussie owner, Richard, has had a career as a folk singer, and in the dining area his CD's are in play at all times, it seems. Eco-lodge patrons come partly to experience the sights and sounds of nature! -- so give us a break from the constant CDs -- and adding a good gamelan recording to the mix would be welcome.

We stayed four nights at Bali Mountain Retreat, which we were surprised to learn is literally next door to Sarinbuana Eco-Lodge. The first three nights we stayed in their most expensive room -- the Lotus House -- but in the Teak House for the final night (since it had already been booked when we booked). The Lotus House is more in the rainforest and the sheets felt wet at night from the humidity, although the air was cool. The Lotus House has a mini-bar but not the Teak House (although the Teak House had a few advantages). The Lotus House was more private since off to itself, while the Teak House includes several rooms.

The hotel has people on staff who may be hired for trekking. We did a mountain to sea cycling trip and a village/rice paddy walk (which was slippery since much rain had fallen). Both treks were great and our guide Putu was wonderful. One day we set off on our own and hiked through the lush rainforest up Mt. Batukaru, at least as far as the temple. The menu is limited but the food was as good as any we ate in Bali. One night we ate next door at Sarinbuana -- their food was comparable but a bit more expensive.

Hidden away on the mountain slope this relaxing spot in a very beautiful garden is very unique on Bali away from the tourists. The rooms are very stylish with everything made from teak wood and with 2 kids it was very nice with option of extra 2 seperate beds in the room. Great places to hang out and relax which was all we where doing while we stayd there. Richard (the Australian owner) was very helpful and present and did also arrange our transfer. Award yourself while on Bali to stay here to enjoy something very special compared to more wellknown places on Bali.
