“very quiet and peaceful”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 July 2013

This hotel was booked for us and included as part of a fantastic mountain bike tour we did with Infinity Mountain biking. We arrived at the hotel by mountain bike after spending most of the day riding. The hotel is in a lovely location in the country and is very quiet. When we arrived we got the impression we were the only guests there with staff hovering around looking like they had been waiting for someone to look after.

At dinner time we saw there were actually about a dozen guests but the property itself seems spread over a range of buildings so we didn't really see much of what the rest of the accommodation is like.

There is a strong art theme at the hotel and its signage advertises an artist retreat style of place. Our room was comfortable, one reviewer said a taste of Bali past, I think the hotel probably reflects an older generation of hotel. It was nice though, friendly and very quiet, our room had an outdoor shower which was lovely but was otherwise fairly basic. There is a quiet village around the hotel.

Dinner was quite nice, take the advice of the staff on what is a good local meal as they knew it well, breakfast simple but fine since we were heading off for another day's mountain biking.

From other people's pictures there seems to be a bit of this place that we missed because our stay was quite short. We got instructions to the swimming pool but didn't actually find it and in the end decided we were a bit tired and instead went for a drink and a snooze.

Not the place for someone wanting nightlife or lots of places to choose from to eat but good for a short quiet stop.

Puri Taman Sari is one of the most gorgeous places in Bali, having the luxury of a 5 star hotel but right in the middle of a remote village. You are surrounded by ride fields, three sacred rivers and shady coconut groves. This hotel is actually part of a traditional Balinese compound owned by a member of the royal family of Mengwi, one of the oldest Balinese kingdoms still operating.

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 April 2013 via mobile

Puri Taman Sari is located in an isolated part of south west Bail. BF and I drove there ourselves, from Permuteran via Jatiluwih and Wongayagede. The drive was incredibly scenic, winding through mountains and rice paddies, but the roads heavily eroded and potholed in parts (especially the section where tourists are charged a toll to use the roads!), and there is not great signage to Marga.
Once we finally found our way to the town, we had even more difficulty locating the accommodation. We saw no signage for it, even though the manager insisted that there was a large sign on the main road. If it wasn't for a very helpful military police officer who asked the locals for directions and escorted us, we may never have found the place.
Once there, we were impressed by its beauty. The main premises are a traditional Balinese compound, clearly looked after with a lot of pride and care. We had no idea what to expect, as we had experienced a lot of difficulty finding out about the rooms and amenities both on the Internet and by emailing the hotel directly beforehand. We were most surprised when the very friendly manager proudly told us that he had placed us in the honeymoon suite, and we were blown away when we saw the room itself. It was huge, well furnished, with an enormous day-bed out front and an even lager outdoor bathroom, which was more like a courtyard than a bathroom.
We were really impressed, until we realised how close we were to the neighbouring property and how far we were from the pool (literally a 5-10 minute walk out of the compound, once we were able to find our way there!). Being so close to the neighbours, we were kept awake by music, motorbikes, cars, dogs and, of course, the obligatory roosters. It is not a room to stay in if you want to sleep.
The villas out of the compound, near the pool, although smaller, looked like they would be much quieter.
Being so isolated means that the hotel has a captured market and can charge a lot for its services and amenities, including charging for wifi which appears to be free everywhere in Bali (including tiny warungs), and charging double the price of most places for a Balinese massage.

I stayed here for 2 nights and the setting is absolutely amazing. Set amid the rice fields with authentic Balinese buildings, one could feel like they were in Bali decades ago. Service was wonderful with many friendly staff. Breakfast was included but was minimal and unfortunately not very good. A little off the beaten track but if you want a place for quiet meditation and peace, this is the spot for you.

Dear Hilary,

Thank you for your review about our small compound of village stays.

If you don't mind, would you tell us, what kind of breakfast that you got on the previous day? I do hope we can improving & well manage the breakfast menu for the next time to come, however, there's two choices of breakfast we can provide here at our place:

- American Breakfast (optional)
- Continental Breakfast (basicly included in the package of room booking)

Once again, thank you for choosing & staying with us, and we are more than happy to welcoming you again here at our place.

After 49 holidays in Bali (I love this beautiful island) I finally discovered Puri Taman Sari Hotel in Umabian. Umabian is about 5 kilometer north of Mengwi. Puri Taman Sari was once a palace of the King of Mengwi. Now it is used for receiving guests who are looking for the real authentic Bali as it always was. History is still here. When you walk around in the resort, it is like going back in time. The village of Umabian is very quiet and you won't find tourism here. It is a place to discover yourself and to make your head empty. For me it is one of the most original places in Bali and I am happy I did find it. It really is a romantic place, great for a honeymoon !

Room Tip: In Puri Taman Sari every room is okay, also the standard rooms. But the villa with four bedrooms and...

I took my extended family here in October. We only had one night because the next night and the night before was full. We'll certainly be back!

Lovely staff, and such a pleasure to meet them! A special mention to Beratha who we met at breakfast the next morning : what a delight he is! Speaks many languages so make sure you have a chat with him! Well traveled and he has the best sense of humour. Had both my daughters laughing and laughing ......... well, we were all having a good time!

Saturday night was quiet, but we made our own fun. Lots of joyful conversation which flowed easily due to the nice food (not super fantastic but good enough), the wonderful service (Ayu was terrific!), and the general ambience : other guests probably thought we were quite mad, but we were relaxed and happy. It was a wonderful stay. Rooms were quite adequate and we loved out door showers. Nothing to complain about, but don't set your expectations too high.

Menwi might seem remote, but it isn't. Not far from Seminyak/Kerobokan : and lots to explore in the surrounding area. I'd use it as a base for several nights, and if I were going to do this, I'd try to get a room with rice field views as it is closer to the swimming pool.

Looks to be a great place to have a low key wedding, and your guests would not have to pay to much to stay. would be lots of fun for any sort of family reunion, event ......... I thoroughly recommend it.

Although I only put 3 for kids activities. The 5 year old in our group just loved it, exploring and running around, feeding the fish, playing with Beratha ....... well done Puri Taman Sari.

And thank you Beratha, you made our stay even more memorable!

When this resort popped up as a compliment to my flight booking on Expedia I was skeptical initially, however with the past positive reviews here on Trip Advisor I gave it a shot with my fiancee. How glad I was when I arrived to this distinctively different Bali experience. The staffs here generally speaks English and more often than note serves us with a smile.

Though being close to nature also means some accompaniment by her habitats such as insects and all but the well kept and tranquil setting and surroundings should not be discounted on. Travelers should lower their expectation in accordance to the price paid and natural beauty in order to enjoy the stay.

Recommend: Agree that room looks gloomy sometimes and could do with an additional lighting in the bedroom.

Would like to thank Agung Nancy and Agung Bagus for all arrangements.
