“Exceptional!”
Reviewed 20 September 2013

I stayed here with my husband and 2 children recently and it was absolutely wonderful. The place has the most wonderful feel as soon as you drive in. The food is to die for, they are the most wonderful cooks, organic freshly grown ingredients. The vanilla ice-cream the most amazing thing I've ever tasted. What I also LOVED about it here was that even though there is nowhere else to eat, your restaurant still charges absolutely reasonable prices, it's nice to not be taken advantage of, thank you. And, Congratulations on achieving a 5/5 eco-rating.

We spent a month traveling around SE Asia and the hotel that we are still talking about is Bali Eco Stay. This very special hotel is a taste of real Bali and the owners have created an environment that allows their guests to really immerse themselves in the community and the traditions of the area. The food is incredible, the massages are top notch and the activity options (if you choose to partake) are wonderful. We took an incredible self guided hike through the local village and rice fields and the views were so magnificent, its hard to believe the pictures we took are real!

John & Cath are the consummate hosts and I only wish we had booked a longer stay. Highly recommended!

Bali has become an island of extremes from the chaos of Kuta and 'Sunset Rd' to the sanctuary of Bali Eco Stay. That said, sanctuary is by necessity remote. DO use their driver as no-one else will find Eco Stay or tolerate the road. Also you are close to nature and this is an Eco stay, so guests that can't tolerate any animal with more than two legs may not be suited.

The reward is respite in harmony with nature, but with a high degree of comfort. Other reviewers have given the details beautifully so it's enough to say "this was our second stay and we'll be back again".

We originally found 'Bali Eco Stay' using TripAdvisor, which came out trumps yet again. So when you find an appraisal helpful do that reviewer a favour, give them a 'helpful vote' :)

Room Tip: All rooms are good but each suits different groups eg single, couple, family, friends. So look clos...

we had read all the reviews before we left England and as it neared the time of our visit, i began to wonder if we would feel let down when we arrived- i could not have been more wrong. Bali Ecostay is fantastic and beyond anything i have ever experienced.
The drive there was an experience in itself- sadly we travelled there in the dark but the return showed us that we had definitely chosen a very beautiful part of Bali to stay.
We stayed in the Harvest Bungalow which was comfortable, spacious and had everything we needed- the little extra touches like the flask of hot water each day for our coffee, the lovely toilettries and the torches to get us to dinner in the evening were just right.
our view across the rice fields was amazing and although the noise at night took a little getting used to, the beds were amazingly comfortable and we slept well.
the food was delicious- freshly picked and prepared each day- we have never eaten so well or so healthily!!
the activities were just right- my son loved carving with Kadek and my daughter and I loved preparing offerings with flowers and banana leaves.we also experienced a bike ride down to the sea (hills like you wouldnt imagine but loads of fun!)
everyone we met was friendly, accomodating and willing to share a smile and say hello. meeting grandfather in his village and flying kites with him was a hilight of the holiday for us.
from the views to the food, from the wonderfully friendly people to the complete relaxation and opportunities for our children to just be free and enjoy life without a screen, our time at Bali Ecostay was just fantastic. I cannot recommend this place enough and i will definitely be back.
thank you to everyone for making our stay such a pleasure.

Room Tip: the harvest bungalow has amazing views of the rice fields and was spacious for our family of 4.

From the moment I entered Bali Eco Stay I felt the weight of the world slip from my burdened shoulders. I arrived at night and was shown to my perfect Balinese hideway of a bungalow, I felt cocooned and safe in the Buddha Bungalow, and immediately I had a little smile on my face, just like a happy buddha,...yes this is what I was looking for. The river, which feeds the very pretty waterfall was a stone throw away from my balcony, and fish ponds sat literally underneath my bungalow. I made my way up to the restaurant and had the first of many delicious meals...clean, fresh, organic, healthy, local, grown on the property. No plastic water bottles here as the water is pure and fresh from a nearby spring. Even the local Balinese wine (by the glass, thank you very much) was delicious...oh and I couldnt believe how inexpensive it was. After a fantastic nights sleep soothed by the tinkling of cascading water I awoke to a whole other world, one of breathtaking beauty and lush greenness of what seemed like rice terraces that went on forever. After a gentle stroll out through the paddies I made my way to the restaurant, were more spectacular views awaited and my bowl of Black Rice Pudding with Coconut Milk & Papaya, I also had the most delicious juice of Turmeric, Coconut Water and Lime and although I knew this was a health tonic, with the turmeric giving my liver a real clean out it tasted so good with the fresh coconut water and lime it quickly became my drink of choice. I spent 7 nights at Bali Eco Stay and moved to a couple Bungalows a couple of times, the glamorous palatial Harvest and then the very private Little Paddy. All three Bungalows were beautiful decorated with lovely Balinese furniture and homey touches (the water chambers of cold delicious spring water & the thermos of hot water for tea or coffee). I had worried that I wouldnt have enough to do but with the beautiful walking tracks available, a number of workshops I attended (one in the village making coconut oil and another in the resort making traditional balinese ceremonial offerings), regular massages and devouring really interesting books from the eclectic library I was kept wonderfully entertained in a quiet peaceful way.
I cant thank John, Cath, Minnie, Agung and ALL the staff at Bali Eco Stay for making it one of the most wonderful holidays ever. Great value for money and wonderful green credentials.

Bali Eco Stay turned out to be more than we expected. The scenery, the food, the people, the place, all contribute to make the visit there an experience to remember. Upon arriving, it was clear that this was the place to finally really relax. The bungalow we rented had a fantastic view, one that made waking up in the morning somewhat of a magical experience. The sound of the stream further allowed us to relax.

The restaurant offers incredible views of rice paddies. In the far distance, the ocean can be seen as well. In the evening, with ambient lighting present, the mood of the restaurant is transformed into a very cozy place to hang out for a couple of hours. The food was superb.

We did not take any of the tours or courses offered, preferring to spend our time reading.

Overall, we strongly recommend this little oasis of tranquility in a truly genuine Balinese setting.

You can get closer to the nature and enjoy your super relaxed time time in the place.

If you are tired from the city its good place to be.

However, the river (swiming area) is not really for swimming it just covers your belly ;)

The food is good and you really feel very welcome in the restaurant.

I would like to mention that during the stay everything is counted into your account. At the end of the day your stay becomes really expensive. Even if you are willing to pay more than avarege.

Good luck !

Thank you for your review.

All reviews are important to us as they serve to help determine how to improve our customers’ experience. We take all feedback seriously and try to make changes when it is ecologically, culturally and logistically feasible to do so.

We are happy to read that you enjoyed our relaxing surroundings as well as the food served in our restaurant Kupe Kupe.

Though, we are concerned that you felt unsatisfied by other parts of your stay with us. For your and other readers’ benefit, we would like to address some of the concerns mentioned in your review.

Let us address your first concern: ‘However, the river (swimming area) is not really for swimming, it just covers your belly’

In line with keeping our impact on the environment to a minimum, we designed our swimming area using the existing stream (river). Consequently, water levels are dictated by the time of year: the rainy season sees higher volumes of water rushing through, providing a deeper pool area and the dry season, as was the case when you visited Bali Eco Stay, sees lower water levels. This is not something we are able to control. Furthermore, we never intended for our swimming area to be a replication of deep expansive pools found in coastal resorts. Our swimming area is meant to provide an opportunity to commune with nature in a natural watery setting. Beyond this swimming area, both up and down stream, and beyond the 12 meter waterfall lie many shallow rock pools with a constant flow of mountain fresh spring water - perfect for easing into after a long walk through the local food forests

Your second concern: “I would like to mention that during the stay, everything is counted into your stay. At the end of the day, your stay becomes very expensive.”

Upon making a booking with Bali Eco Stay, guests are sent a very detailed invoice. This invoice clearly breaks down the total cost of one’s stay. It can then be assumed that you were fully aware of accommodation costs before you arrived at Bali Eco Stay. We therefore need to consider that your grievances are either with the food, transfer and/or activity costs enjoyed during your time with us.

To make our guests’ stay more comfortable, we have adopted a system where guests are not required to pay as they consume. For example, meals, massages and/or workshops enjoyed are paid upon departure when checkout procedures are completed. This is a common practice in many hospitality establishments.

Bali Eco Stay is completely transparent with regards to costs. Thus, your comment took us by surprise. With regards to food, our website includes a copy of our menu (with prices - http://www.baliecostay.com/baliecomenu.htm ), each bungalow has a copy of the menu (with prices) and upon sitting in the restaurant, guests are given a menu (with prices) to choose from. Our guests are always fully informed of the cost of the items they order. There should be no surprises when reviewing the itemized list of consumed food upon departure. During your stay, your group consisted of three adults staying in a bungalow. You personally were not always present when your friends consumed food in our restaurant during the afternoon. Upon receiving the itemized list of the food your group consumed, you refused to pay for the food that was consumed in your absence. Did you expect that such items would not be added to the bungalow invoice because you were absent at the time? Surely this cannot be the basis for your complaint. Bali Eco Stay offers a generous complimentary breakfast. Beyond this, all other food and beverages ordered by guests will be invoiced accordingly.

Most activities, workshops and transfers are outsourced to members of our local community. We invite you to read our Community and Staffing policy (http://www.baliecostay.com/ecopolicies.htm) to understand why we feel it is important to provide employment to local villagers. As such, we have created a list of activities and workshops that provide guests the opportunity to interact with local artisans. This outsourcing of activities has a tremendously beneficial effect on the local community by providing much needed employment. Every bungalow has a list of possible workshops (with prices) that guests can enjoy. In your case, a member of your group chose to attend a coconut oil making workshop. This workshop involves the participation of a local oil maker and a translator, two individuals that spend a total of two and a half to three hours with a guest. The cost for your friend was Rps 200,000 (approximately US$20). Is this one of the items you consider in your statement ‘everything is counted into your stay’. Once again, if it is, we fail to understand why this could be the case as prices for workshops are clearly published in all bungalows.

Your group booked a transfer from Pemuteran to Bali Eco Stay. Transfer costs are based on distance and time. For example, the time required to complete the above route is three hours. At your request, desiring to visit areas along the way, your transfer time went from three hours to approximately six hours. Should the driver be expected to cover the costs incurred from your desire to visit temples along the way? As mentioned above transfers are outsourced to members of the local community. We are baffled as to why you objected to having to pay for the extra three hours it took for your journey, which in the end, you did not pay anyway.

When qualifying Bali Eco Stay as a ‘very expensive’ place to enjoy, one needs to try to be more objective. If one’s comparison is based on backpacker’s/homestay accommodation, then yes indeed, Bali Eco Stay can be seen as being expensive. But when compared to five-star accommodation along the beach in Nusa Dua, then Bali Eco Stay does not appear expensive. ‘Expensive’ is a very relative term. Bali Eco Stay prices are based on accommodation prices of establishments in the Ubud area that offer similar levels of comfort and service.

In the end, it is the overall rating that prevails. It is clear that the vast majority of guests who have come to Bali Eco Stay have enjoyed their time with us. Although we welcome all feedback, we also reserve the right to comment when we feel that we have been portrayed in an unfair way.
