You don't have to spend a lot of time here, but it's inexpensive, educational (about the man and the dam named after him), and a good place to stop and let the family get out of the car for an hour.

This is site is comprised of many building which were in existence at the time Hoover was a young boy, consisting in part of the small cottage where he was born, his fathers blacksmith shop, and the school he attended. There is a short film depicting his life as a boy in West Branch.

Hoover's presidential library is also located on the site, but unfortunately we did not have time to tour the library.

Adjacent to the historic site is the little town of West Branch, IA. It is very convenient to tour the site, then stroll the streets of West Branch. There are shops, and a few local restaurants to eat in.

Nice historical site, nice clean little town to eat in.

Nice video. They have a well preserved birthplace and buildings that figured in his childhood. It helps to see where he came from and the influence that the Friends had on his person.

Our family of three (two adults and 10 year old) stopped for 2.5 hours at this free attraction off I-80 west. It was a sunny and warm day--good to walk around this educational historic site. We saw a 12 minute video at the visitor center and walked around the site to complete the activities for the Junior Ranger badge. Visitor Center was understaffed in the mid-afternoon.

I live in West Branch so I often walk at the historic site. If you have a little time take one of the trails into the restored prairie. It is beautiful in the summer when the wild flowers are blooming.
