“See it to believe it!”
Reviewed 11 May 2012

We visited Kuramathi for our 10 day honeymoon in April/May 2012 and booked through Nick at Travel Designers who was fantastic.

Everything about this island is perfect if you are looking for diversity. We are not a couple who wanted a secluded desert island that you can walk around in 5 minutes and eat in the same place 3 times a day! From the moment you arrive on Kuramathi the hospitality is astounding and being presented on arrival with a fruit juice and a cold flannel is a nice touch. The staff are attentive and nothing is too much trouble.

With 9 different types of accomodation to choose from, we started our holiday in a Deluxe Beach Villa with Jacuzzi and upgraded to a Water Villa with Jacuzzi (both fantastic experiences in their own right) and this was handled efficiently by the staff at Kuramathi and didn't affect our hectic schedule of snorkelling and sunbathing! Don't be shy to ask your waiter/waitress at dinner if you can take any remains of a bottle of wine back to your villa, they are more than happy for you to do this and nothing beats a glass of wine in the jacuzzi overlooking the Indian Ocean.

There are 6 restaurants to choose from all of which are great but for that little something special make sure you don't miss The Reef for its location (sunset and stingray feeding up that end of the island is extraordinary) and The Island Barbeque for the ambiance and where they flambée your food at your table. They are well worth an 8am start in order to secure a booking - the Reef only does 18 covers a night! The Palm and the Island Coffee Shop are great spots for a lunchtime snack. We found our hardest decision each day was which, of the vast selection, of cocktails to try next. We loved the Island Special and the Little Dinghy.

The snorkelling has to be some of the best in the world - you really don't have to go far to see reef sharks, stingrays and hundreds of variety of tropical fish. My husband had an amazing encounter with some eagle rays while snorkelling at dusk and got some photos we will treasure forever.

We both had two visits to the Spa whilst we were on Kuramathi, needless to say that we left feeling extremely relaxed and pampered. It is worth upgrading to the outside treatment pavillion over the sea for an extra $50.

Included in our honeymoon package was a candelit dinner on the beach and a sunset cruise which both helped to make the trip extra special. I will never forget sipping wine at sunset watching the dolphins from our boat.

Despite the change in seasons at roughly the end of April we saw no rain whilst we were there and the temperature was constantly above 30 degrees. The sun is fierce so plenty of sunscreen required. A slight hazard we encountered was that we, and seemingly most others on the island, got bitten by an insect of some sort most evenings despite thoroughly covering in repellent. We were informed by our rep that they 'fog' the island at 4am every day but this seemed to make little difference. On the plus side though they were not mosquito bites and tended to have disappeared after a day or so.

All in all it was the absolute perfect holiday, and even that feels like I am understating Kuramathi. I can see why so many people return year after year...I suspect we will be joining them!

We stayed for 10 nights in September 2011 for the second part of our honeymoon and it was by far the most beautiful place we have ever stayed! We have been lucky enough to travel to some beautiful parts of the world but the sandbank at the tip of the island is indescribably beautiful. The food and service is fantastic. I would definately recommend upgrading to the select all inclusive. Two small complaints are that the showers weren't cleaned sufficiently daily and we were not given our room upgrade on arrival (which was booked with Kuoni) but after a few phonecalls this was resolved. Staff are extremely helpful and the island really is stunning. We liked having the choice of restaurants each evening and all were delicious. We had a jacuzzi villa but hardly used it so if I went back I would downgrade the room so we could stay for longer. We hope to return next year.

Honeymooned here in late March 2012 booked through travel designers. Al la carte was well worth it for us. We loved the freedom it offered and other than approximately $100 in tips over the 10 nights, we spent nothing.

We arrived by sea plane which was a good experience. Luggage travelled with us which was a bonus as we'd heard it sometimes follows by boat. We had a 45 minute wait in a modern and comfortable lounge with inclusive snacks and drinks. The seaplane landed at one island after 20 minutes dropping of 6 people and then took off again before landing at a jetty near 'kuramathi service island'. We were picked up by a boat and relieved to pass this island by and cary on to the perfect looking kuramathi itself.

We stayed in a beech villa with jacuzzi which was lovely, 15 meters from the sea and right by a snorkeling channel. Give the jacuzzi an hour or so to warm up! Our allocated restaurant was the largest of the three and lacked personality but as we only ever had breakfast there this was not a problem. If not planning on being a la carte or using the non buffet restaurants i would advise trying to stay at the top or middle of the island as you'd then be allocated one of the more intimate buffet restaurants. All the other restaurants were very good and booking at reception was simple for 7,8 or 9pm. The Reef was the most difficult to book as it has fewer tables so best to book this 3 days earlier (the most advance you can). We actually enjoyed the Thai and island barbecue most in the evenings and the pizzeria for lunch.

Snorkeling was wonderful, just make sure you use one of the snorkeling channels indicated by a board on land and a yellow flag by the start of the reef. You will see sharks and on the way out to the reef were visibility is poorer, you realize they see you well before you see them and they completely ignore you.

Both swimming pools were lovely, both very different but clean and not busy. Towels are placed out for guests on all loungers, beach or pool, no need to bring your own.
The stingray feeding at 7pm at the top of the island is a must see and there are also presentations at the eco centre about the reef which were well worth seeing.

The drinks were all branded. Only very few premium whiskeys/brandies etc were not included and are clearly marked in all menus. There are numerous cocktails to work your way through and the different bars all seemed to have a few unique to themselves. The island is cash free, everything is signed for under your room number.

We were really impressed with the presentation of the island. Apparently 700 staff! for a maximum of 600 guests however the island was anything but crowded and staff were excellent. We had fun trying to capture a good picture of the fruit bats! There are buggy stops on the island if you fancy being lazy or the wife chooses to wear heals! Walking the length of the island is a comfortable 30 minute stroll.

We returned by boat which took about an hour and although we really enjoyed the sea plane arriving, if we are able to return we would use the boat both ways to ensure we could go a la carte again. Also, some people returning on our flight who got the sea plane had to leave 2 hours earlier than those who travelled by boat (possibly a one off bit of bad luck). The departure lounge was also kuoni's own with free drinks/snacks.

Would love to return one day!

Kuramathi,
on rasdttoo atoll- is a fifteen minute seaplane ride from MALE but some still insist on taking the two hour boat ride (a distance of 45 miles). Kuramatti is to the west of MALE. The best beach is near the main reception, Eco Center, and the Main dive shop. This is also the best place to snorkel and the best (beach) house reef. And the best place for kids to swim. If you can find a map of the island it is the fat end, not the skinny or pointed end of the island. The island is 1.8 kilometers long. So, be careful where you stay, you might have a long walk to a dive shop or the reception. There are three receptions on this island and luggage transfer was great and a little transfer bus runs the loop/trip, around the island every fifteen minutes. It’s just annoying to wait fifteen minutes because you have to run back to the room for sunscreen. That’s why I prefer rooms #131-146, in superior beach villas with Jacuzzi category. The beach stops on this side at room 131. Beach villas #13 to #83 are on the windy side; yes, one side has a breeze and the other or over water villas side has none. Think about it, you don’t want an over water villa to get blown or washed away. So, that’s why they’re on that side of the island. While on this topic OWV (over water villas) have great sunsets, no beach, but when tide is in you can snorkel out 2X daily early morning and late afternoon. There are steps down from OWV to the water. OWV are beautiful and you are assigned a high value restaurant because of the money (extra) you pay. There are three basic restaurants they really are in three different categories based on what you payed for youer accommodations the fat end of the island eats at “Haruge”, the middle eat at the slightly upscale “Maleafaiy” restaurant, the pointed end of the island eats at “Farivalhu”. On top of this there are five specialty restaurants; The Reef, Island Barbeque, Siam Gardens, The Palm, Tandodr Mahal. All are fantastic!! But I like the Reef the best. There are three meal plans; full board (lowest), Basic All-inclusive or select All-inclusive.. The select-All-inclusive is the best. Water (bottle) and wine (bottle) no charge. For a drink like “long island Tea” they chare $8-9 USD for each shot of liquor so a long island ice tea could cost $36-40 dollars, but there is no charge on select all-inclusive plan. So, select-all inclusive is the only way to go… ALSO the bars don’t let you take away drinks in a “glass cup”. So bring lots of plastic cups with you if you want to enjoy a drink in your room or on the beach. We ate at the Haruge restaurant. Because our room was in superior beach villas with Jacuzzi category. We ate at the Horuge one to three meals daily, it was great food, service excellent, no need to upscale. You will be assigned a table and you’ll use that same table for the whole trip. Everyone from room #131 for the last 10 years used the same table. Other table may be better but your suck there and its ok.
Scuba Diving
Its great, dive sites are very close most 10-15 minutes. Couple days a week do a three tank dive over to Ari Atoll. Leaves 5:45AM comes back 5:00PM (All day) that night with cold lunch served. There is a toilet on the boat, no camera buckets, large boat, lots of shade and shower (outside). Once a week they do a two tank dive to the opposite of Rasdhoo Reef (Kuramathi’s reef) leaves at 5:45AM and gets back by 12:45PM or op out for 8:45AM or 1:45PM one tank dive. Need a minimum of two divers for one tank dives, six divers for ½ or all day dives each dive will cost $90 USD (boat, equipment, computers, tip, dive fee) per person but its worth it. The water is crystal clear can see forever! Try to get a room near the dive shop, just great! Last thoughts: need bug spray 100% Deet, AC is excellent in villas even though the toilet and shower are outside. Plastic cups (take away bar), need flash lights, swimmers ear drops, take 200$ in 1$ dollar bills for tipping and tip bartenders, even though it’s inclusive you’ll get more, scuba facilities are located in two areas of the island. Frequently one boat was used to pick divers in both location- there is no dive facility on the “pointed end” of the island. We stayed at Conrad Hilton in 2009 on Rangali Island. I’d go back to Kuramathi and save about 4000-5000 USD for the same amount of time. Remember Breakfast 7:30-10AM, lunch 12-2PM, and Dinner 7-9:30PM in your assigned restaurant and your assigned seating (table). From Jamaica by way of Australia and Ahem (DM) both excellent service providers.

Room Tip: room 110 has great beach access.

We just came back from Kuramathi last week from our honeymoon! Still dreaming about the place and want to go back soon. Maldives was on the top of our list to spend our honeymoon. I can say Kuramathi was the best choice as the island was gorgeous. After reaching Male airport we went to Kuramathi desk for our seaplane transfer. The staff was very good and helpful with our luggage check in. We only had to wait for 20 min for our sea plane. The waiting was worth in the Kuramathi lounge with aircon, nice snacks and drinks with fantastic views of the sea plane parking area. That half an our seaplane flight with breathtaking views was out of the world and well worth the money. When we reached at the reception they welcomed us with a cool drink and the staff at the reception again was very professional and explained everything to us in detail about our stay. We had taken a Water villa with Jaccuzzi which was an experience of a life time. The area on the resort where water villas are made is the best area with stunning views of the Sea, good for snorkeling and sunset views. We were allocated Malaafaiy restaurant for our meals. I would say this restaurant was much better in ambiance than the other main restaurant near the main reception. If you are going as a couple stay on the second end of the island and not near the main reception as that was mainly occupied by big familes with children and groups. We spended most of the time in Dhoni Bar which again I founded much better then the main Fung bar with stunning view and fabulous sun deck. The staff was really friendly and attentive. However, we noticed a difference in the bar and island coffee shop near the main reception the staff was OK and not very friendly.
We had a basic all inclusive package which was more than good as everyday they had different theme buffet and the selection of food was really good specially if you are a non-vegetarian. So , my husband enjoyed alot. Unfortunately, I am a vegetation!!! for me the basic all inclusive was not good at all as they hardly had any vegetarian dish except for some fried potatoes or steamed rice. Even the salads had meat in it!! If you are a vegetarian don't go for basic all inclusive!!!!! However, the chefs at the restaurant were really nice and they made me a vegetation curry everyday as per bowl. So I could survive for 6 days.

Overall we had a fantastic experience. The resort was beautiful, Staff was very good. They clean the rooms twice in the day. Water sports are good and reasonable. The spa area is very good. Out of 5 days we went for Spa and body massage twice. Thoroughly enjoyed it. I got a hair cut done as well and and the hairstylist from Austria was very nice and friendly.our jaccuzi was broken when we tried to use it and they came and fixed it in half an hour.

I will definitely would love to go back. Just one thing that me and husband did not like and would like to recommend the resort. They had a great hospitality when you arrive and till the time you stay in the resort. However as soon as you check out, they just stop caring about you. Our flight back home from Male was at 11PM at night and we caught the last sea plane from the resort at 4PM. We asked at the reception that can we wait at their airport lounge to catch our flight back home and they said its only for the arriving customers. Which we felt a bit upsetting. The receptionist at the main reception was rude and even after we requested couple of times she just said they can not make any exception. So we had to wait 5 hours under a tin shed at the airport to catch our flight which was a bit of a let down after getting a fab treatment for 6 days.

I think for the price you pay and the amount you spend on the resort services they should provide airport lounge facility to departure customers specially when there are no arrivals in evening!! Rather than just closing the lounge they can keep it open for their departure customers.

Room Tip: Take water villa with jaccuzii

My wife and I recently stayed here for a week as part of a month long holiday. I must say that as far as location goes, the resort is unsurpassed. The atoll and surrounding reefs are stunning with an abundance of marine life and a snorkeling experience that was out of this world. We stayed in an overwater bungalow with jacuzzi and I can't recommend this room highly enough. Just jump off the deck and it's a 50 meter swim to the reef. The food was exceptional however.... What we thought let the resort down was the staff. For the vast majority of them, any friendliness or personality they showed seemed forced at best. We certainly did not feel 'welcomed' there and after having just spent 2 weeks on a princess cruise ship, the difference in service was chalk and cheese. Many of the staff also had poor English which resulted in us often receiving incorrect food and drink orders. While we got the select all inclusive package which should have meant we could use any restaurant, we were unable to go to the reef restaurant as it booked out by 9 am two days in advance and we wanted to sleep in rather than get up at 8 and go to reception to book dinner so that was extremely disappointing. We were also told that the sunset cruise which was part of our package was booked out until the day after we were leaving!. The final few insults on our day of departure were when the porter counted out the tip I gave him right in front of me and then pointedly made a sour face though I thought $20usd was enough for 2 suitcases!
Finally, as we had a 4 hour wait at Mali airport between arriving from the resort and flying out, I asked reception if we could wait in the resorts lounge there and I was told that would be fine however, when we arrived there they told us that it was strictly for arriving guests only and we could wait in a tin shed of a terminal with no air con for 2 hours until the departure lounge for our flight opened. Unfortunately, a fantastic resort in a stunning location is sadly let down by the staff there and for over $1000 per night it's simply not good enough. While we are already planning a return trip to the Maldives, it most certainly will not be to Kuramathi

We stayed on Kuramathi for 10 nights at the beginning of April and it was PERFECT !.

We had requested a Deluxe Beach Villa close to the sea and refused the free upgrades. We got exactly what we asked for. At the quiet end of the island, the villa was perfect, 10 metres from the sea and even closer to The Reef. We had our own private beach virtually all week and the swim out to the drop-off for snorkelling took less than 10 minutes. We stayed All Inclusive Select and it was well worth the extra money. The breakfasts in our appointed restaurant were excellent, and we had a couple of lunches here as well but every other meal was taken in one of the specialist restaurants. Yep, we tried them all !!. We had many lunches at the Coffee Shop, don't be put off by the title, hot and cold meals, desserts, you name it. Lunch is also very nice at The Palm Italian and the ice cream sundaes outstanding. At night, we ate at the Indian and Thai restaurants, which were great and as a curry wimp, I was very impressed when the staff said i could choose the curry I liked best and Chef would cook it mild, medium, strong or boiling. I had to order wimpy mild (on menu as medium strong) and it was cooked to perfection and no side effects ! We ate several times at the Palm at night and these were also perfect but the best ? The Beach Barbeque, eating under the stars and The Reef at a table next to the beach, with gentle waves lapping close by. Could it get better ? No way, not anywhere. We doubt that you could eat better food at a better restaurant anywhere on this planet. Simply outstanding and a good choice of wines for the AI+ guests as well. Another plus for me - included (unlike a number of AI options on other islands) 12 yr old pure malt whisky at any bar, which is my favourite tipple bar none.

The villa was very comfortable and kept spotlessly clean for us. We also made good use of the air-conned mini bus and golf buggies running around the island. In that heat (never less than mid 90's or 37C every day) and humidity, you need it unless youre in tip top condition, which of course most of us aren't.

Every member of staff we met was brilliant. It would be wrong to single anyone out because this island's management have really got this island set up perfectly. We were in paradise with some wonderful people making it happen.

However, I must now talk about the diving and snorkelling, which is why we love the Maldives. Rasdhoo Divers are undoubtedly the best dive school I've been to anywhere. My wife and I met Matt, who runs Rasdhoo with Helmut, on our flight back from Male last October and he told me to make contact when we arrived in Kuramathi. Our first dive was with Matt, who is a fantastic teacher. Easy going, but thorough and safe and the dive was really enjoyable. Followed this up with 5 more dives with different instructors and they were all out of the same mould as Matt. Although I was already PADI Advanced with Nitrox and 35 dives, my diving technique improved no end and it was down to the approach and quality of the dive school. The plankton on the Hammerhead Dive(no, didn't see any Hammerheads) was the most beautiful, mind blowing natural sight have ever seen and will stay with me forever.

The snorkelling - again out of this world. So many highlights but the best was being with 7 (yes, seven) 1.2 - 1.8 metre black tip sharks off the Water Villas and feeling totally safe in the company of these fantastic and much misunderstood creatures.

In summary, we love Kuramathi. We will go back and don't be put off by it being a big island. It is big enough to lose 600 guests and 800 staff and every day, we wondered where everyone was. It is fantastic in every way and no 5 star resort could possibly better this perfect paradise !

Room Tip: If you like snorkelling and private beach, go for a Deluxe Beach Villa
