If Lonely Planet designed guest houses, then they'd be similar to the King Fern Guest House. The decoure is a mixture of Bob Marley regae and Sri Lanka Traditional. My room had a trap door instead of door! The hotel restaurant is decent as well. I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Nuwara Eliya. Book early as the King Fern only has four guest rooms.

I saw all the good reviews for this so was quite looking forward to saying here. I must say i was dissapointed. My main issue was cleanliness. The first room we were put in (downstairs) was dark, damp, smelly and horrible. The carpet was actually wet, and when we told the staff, they denied it. The toilet wasn't exceptionally clean, but i guess was passable. Also the sheets didn't smell clean, and i felt they hadn't been washed after the previous person. We asked if we could change rooms, but they said there were none available. I slept very badly that night because of all this. The next day we were able to change rooms, and i must say the room we moved to was a huge improvement. It had it's own balcony and wooden floors and didn't have the damp feel. On the whole, the guesthouse WAS quite funky and was small, and cozy so you were able to talk to other travellers there. If we hadn't been put in the first room my review would have been alot more positive, so i guess your experience will depend on your room. if you go, ask to be put in the loft room with the balcony, NOT the downstairs room. One other small issue i had was that: we wanted to go to horton plains national park one morning, so we asked the staff, and they said the guesthouse car would take us for a charge of about 3,500 rupees or so. We paid this, only to find on arriving at horton plains that a couple in the room across from ours also did exactly the same thing with the guest-houses' other car, and had left 5 minutes before us. I think the guest-house staff could have let us know so we could have shared a car with them (there are only about 6 rooms in the place and 3 staff), especially as they pretended to actually care about our journey and want the best for us. (although i guess you could also argue that capitalism is capitalism!)

Room Tip: DON'T get any of the double downstairs rooms

Because of the rainy weather all the accomdation felt damp - and we had to ask to have the bed sheet changed because it had a dubious mark on it. King Fern charge the same as other B&Bs we stayed in in Sri Lanka and in our experience the accomodation was no where near as good.
One positive point was that they did help arrange a good driver for us.

My wife and I had a wonderful time at the King Fern. Nishan, the owner, is a friendly, fun host and an absolute gentleman. Whether he and his staff we feeding us delicious home-cooked food, entertaining us of an evening or simply joining us for a chat, every moment was enjoyable. It was also a great place to meet other people travelling through.
The hand-made beds were comfortable. The gardens and trickling streams were relaxing and peaceful even in Nurelia's notorious rainshowers.
I'd happily return to the King Fern and highly recommend it.

First of all make sure that you book King fern cottage and not the bungalu.
They have only 4 rooms, which are simple and nice with no view.
The garden is very nice, very green.
It's fun to seat at their resturant.
The place is very close to the city centre
The owner is very nice and professional, attentive.
The price doesn't include: Breakfast, taxes and driver accommadation.

Nicest guest house Ive ever stayed in. These guys are awesome! They were so helpful to us, very welcoming and the accommodation is really nice! The beds are big, comfortable and warm, the environment and food are awesome. Bring warm clothes though! Free internet, hot water, towels...everything was really great and I 100% recommend it!
