“Disappointing”
Reviewed 4 December 2013

Room was small, smelly and cramped.
There was no tea/coffee facilities as advertised.
The drains blocked so we couldnt have a proper shower as the water flooded everywhere. The staff never came to fix it as they promised, the bathroom was dirty.
It is at the top of the hill, which is quite inconvenient for those walking.
It was quite dirty around the outside of the hotel, and dingy.
The dining area was lovely, the food not too bad.
In all it was ok to stay there, but you would expect to pay about 1/4 of what we paid for a room such as this. For the money paid, it was shocking value for money....much better off to stay somewhere in town such as the amazing grand hotel for a tiny bit more.

Room Tip: We stayed right at the end of the corridor, the room was dingy and the window opened up onto a ?farm...

Dear Mr. C.Edward,

We thank you for staying at the Tea Bush Hotel, Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka, for two days during you recent visit to Sri Lanka.

We have noted the contents of your review on your stay at our hotel, and do wish to comment on the points raised by you. One of our Directors from the Colombo Head Office made a special inspection tour of the hotel, upon receipt of your comments to verify your complaints, and to rectify any shortcomings found.

* Room was small and cramped - You have selected a Deluxe Room which has the standard dimensions of a room of that grade in any tourist hotel. The dimensions are 4.25 mtrs x 4.35 mtrs. The room is certainly not cramped and the furniture and fitting are positioned in a well planned manner.

* Room was smelly - We have a house-keeping department at our hotel, with a team of dedicated and experienced staff, who would clean each room and the bathroom thoroughly ever morning, shampoo the carpets and spray air fresheners.Their work is re-checked by the house-keeping executive. Thus it may not be possible that the room was smelly.
There were a few stubborn patches on the carpet created by some liquid spilled by a previous occupant. We have now applied a special chemical and removed these patches as well.

* There was no tea/coffee facilities - We assure you that this facility is most certainly available all 24 hours of the day, ON REQUEST. If you requested for tea/coffee, the same would definitely have been arranged from the restaurant to be served at your room, any time of the day and night.

* Drains blocked and could not have a proper shower - The stainless steel gully system installed in the bathroom provides for a regulated draining of the bathroom. This is the first occasion on which we have had a complaint on bathroom getting flooded. We apologize for our staff not finding an effective and an immediate solution to your complaint. The relevant staff was reprimanded over this incident.

However, after your departure the problem was identified and found that although the stainless steel gully cover operated well, the drainage of waste water was not swift enough causing a momentary flooding of the bath area. As a practical solution all such gully covers were replaced with a type that has a greatly increased draining capacity.

* The bathroom was dirty -This we believe was due to the temporary flooding of the bath area, which has now been resolved.

* The hotel is at the top of the hill and quite inconvenient for those walking - True, the hotel is perched on the slopes of the Single Tree Hill, giving a grand view of the Nuwara Eliya town, the Race Course, the Lake Gregory and the surrounding hill country dominated by Pidurutalagala, the highest peak in Sri Lanka close-by. One can also get a grand view of the nearby Lovers Leap and the Glenfalls waterfalls.

You will certainly appreciate that a holiday in the hill country would not be complete unless your hotel would give you a grand view of the surrounding area, which is possible only if the hotel is located on a higher elevation above its surroundings.

* The surrounding area was quite dirty- The area surrounding the hotel is a well maintained hotel garden complete with beautiful plots of flowers and lawns.

The hill country is dominated by tea gardens and plots of upcountry vegetables. In fact the hotel has its own vegetable plot, and the hotel guests are encouraged to uproot the carrots, leeks, etc, and request the hotel staff to prepare their favourite salads, soups or other dishes for them.

* The dining area was lovely, the food not too bad -Our Fine Dining Restaurant offers delicious A-La-Carte menu, which the guest may have, while enjoying the unobstructed grand view of the surround hill country through the glass walls of the restaurant. We have not had any adverse comments on the quality of the food served at our hotel, and have had very good comments from all the guests who stayed at our hotel. In fact, we always have guests who are staying at other hotels, coming over to enjoy the meals at our Fine Dining Restaurant.

However, we are very sorry if the food served on the particular day was not in your favour. We constantly strive to improve further on the quality of our food.

* The room window opened up on to a farm - Nuwara Eliya is famous for its upcountry vegetables, which are grown in the surrounding areas among the tea gardens. As had been stated earlier, the hotel has its own vegetable plots.

Dear Mr. Edward, you are most welcome to stay at our hotel during your next visit to Sri Lanka, to witness the further improvements that had been made after your first stay with us.

In closing may we take the opportunity to apologize for any inconvenience that you may have experienced during your stay at our hotel.

Kind Regards,
Shiranthi Dissanayake

Simply heaven, the views and the trees and the waterfall just simply perfect one of the best view i ever seen..the hotel is not bad ill rate it 5 star for the view and bathrooms as they have one of the best bathrooms ever! but the service is bad .. they close at 10 PM they wont get you anything after that.. the breakfast wasn't as good the food was tasteless and you cant get a WIFI at your room you have to go up to the front desk so you can use the wifi - they don't have a lot of activities to do.

Room Tip: 206 rooms on the 2nd floor

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for taking your valuable time to express your sincere feeling regarding your stay in Nuwara-Eliya on TripAdvisor. But i think you have posted you comments in a wrong Tea Bush Hotel.

Since you have mentioned a water fall and a room number 206 i think you are referring Tea Bush Hotel-Ramboda. Tea Bush Nuwara-Eliya & Ramboda is two different hotels and both have two different management. Therefore i am really sorry if you face any difficulty during your stay In Tea Bush Hotel- Ramboda.

We Tea Bush Hotel-Nuwara-Eliya is a boutique type hotel located within Nuwara Eliya city limits, perched on the Single Tree Hill with a magnificent view of Piduruthalagala the highest peak in the island, Adams Peak the famed holy mountain and the Nuwara Eliya town far below.

We serve the finest and tastiest food and beverages at our fine dining restaurant, and our room facilities include Wi-fi , satellite TV, tea/coffee making facilities, etc. With just nine rooms, our room service is at par with the best in the region.

Our guests have a choice of activities while staying at our hotel. Boating at the Gregory Lake or just strolling at the Victoria Park and the Nuwara Eliya Town are just within walking distance. On request we can arrange a day outing to the world famous Hakgala Botanical Gardens, Horton Plains the National Park among the clouds at 7,200 feet elevation, with peek down the World’s End, the 3000 feet sheer precipice, a visit to a tea factory to see how the tea that you brew back at home is prepared.

I do hope that we will have the pleasure of welcoming you to Tea Bush Hotel-Nuwara-Eliya on a future visit to Sri Lanka.

We were late in reaching Nuwara Eliya, so the driver suggested to retire for the night at this hotel which is some 10 km away from the NE town proper. The hotel is still under construction but the owner has started hiring out the rooms and we did not mind spending one night there. The rooms are massive and the bathroom size is unimaginable. Except the tiling work, in room wifi and some such small details, the rooms are habitable. There was TV in the room but not many channels. Tea/Coffee maker was in the room. On our request a pedestal fan was also provided. But the best part is the VIEW from the window and from the LOBBY. It is breathtaking, water falls running down the hill not so far from your window, the valley, the greenery and the winding roads. You even get a full window view of the water fall and the valley while taking shower. Food was not that great, but then, they are still not operating in full steam. The staff were very good and smiling.

Room Tip: All rooms are overlooking the valley and mountain. Try to pick a room at the far end of the hotel fo...

Location: Liked the fact that it was located away from the town center. Sits above the town in the middle of a hill (Mt Pedro) so this makes for great views. At the same time, just a 5-10 min drive away from Gregory Lake and the market.

Food: We had lunch on both the days and the meals were very tasty (veg and non-veg) and reasonably priced

Rooms: The Standard room we got was a little small and dingy. The Deluxe room was much better. Sadly neither of them had a view. Had to go out to the restaurant / lawn for the view. Only the Super Deluxe room has a view.

Service: Very helpful and co-operative staff who catered to all our needs

Activities: The top of Mt. Pedro (Sri Lanka's highest according to Lonely Planet) is just a 1-2 hr walk away. Even better views from there. Gregory Lake too is nearby.

Extras: Free Wi-fi was a plus. Also had free accommodation for our cab driver.

All in all, would definitely return. Tea Bush definitely does justice to the charming town of Nuwara Eliya.

First this hotel is NOT near Nuwara Eliya. It is in the village of Ramboda. The hotel is very new. The whole hotel has a modern design. The view is amazing, rooms are very quite. It is very clean. We only stayed one night to be close to the tea plantations, but it's also close to Horton Plains National Park and The World's End. It was a fairly peaceful and enjoyable stay, but be advised that the rooms are not soundproofed and the hotel is at the very top of a winding hill with other hotels on the hill that are closer to the main roads.

We had a bit of a dissappointing experience here given the price. The inside of the hotel is very dated and dimly lit so it looks a bit dingy. The communal areas could do with a bit of an update. No one was at reception when we arrived and we had to go looking for them. The staff were friendly enough but the service at breakfast and dinner was a bit weird, with the staff making strange comments to us and hanging around a little bit too much while we were trying to eat. It may have just been because there didn't seem to be many other people around and they were bored. The view is great but it rained the whole time we were there so we didn't get to make the most of it and ended up feeling like we had paid top hotel prices for what was essentially a guest house with a few more staff.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Tea Bush Hotel is a boutique type hotel of 10 comfortable rooms, situated in Nuwara-eliya, the little England of Sri Lanka. The original planter’s granite bungalow, “Shelborne”, as it was then known built in the 1800’s, where most of the hotel rooms are housed adding to the old world charm of the hotel, was the residence of the superintendent of Haddon Hill Tea Estate. All rooms are provided with hot and cold water and room heaters are optional. Ample parking space coupled with drivers’ quarters is a boon for the tour operators. The large well appointed restaurant serves delicious food for both in-house guests as well as walk-in guests. Room service is also available on request. The limited number of rooms makes every guest a special one for the hotel. The high elevation of the hotel above the town makes the view from the rooms and the restaurant of the surrounding hills, Nuwara-eliya town and the Lake Gregory to be quite breathtaking. Mt. Pedro or Pidurutalagala, the highest peak in the Island is close at hand. One could get a grand view of Adams Peak or Sri Pada, the famed holy mountain by climbing the Single Tree Hill just behind the hotel.Guests on their own may visit the Victoria Park and the Lake Gregory which are just walking distance from the hotel, while hiking trips may be arranged by the hotel to the surrounding hills. Guided day tours may be arranged on request to the Hakgala Botanical Gardens with its famed rose beds or to the Horton Plains, the National Park among the clouds at an elevation of 7000 feet, and perhaps a peep down the Worlds End, the 3000 feet sheer precipice. All this would make your stay at the Tea Bush Hotel linger in your memories for long years to come. ... more   less
