“Tourist attraction”

Macwood Tea Factory
Reviewed 10 October 2013

tourist attractions are some times a hype of attracting you to a particular location and when you eventually get there it's a bit of a let down. The scenery in Nuwara Eliya is beautiful as is the weather as it is.a change from the heat and humidity. the tea factory itself is not that interesting you get to see the machines that roll and separate the tea and sacks and sacks of tea. The explanation was of mediocre interest. What I really wanted to do was walk in the plantations and see the actual tea plucking process. It wasn't a bad experience the visit and it is a touch of history, and the tea in the tea shop did taste better than usual

This is good tea factory with a nice tour, but the place is too busy - takes long to get attention. But staff is friendly.

Mackwoods Tea Factory in Labookellie is about 45min before reaching Nuwara Eliya and is a welcome stop after traveling over 4 hours from Colombo. The fresh cool air confirms that you're close to "Little England"!

Spend a few minutes at the Tea Center, maybe buy some tea or souvenirs there. Dont forget to have a cup of tea with a piece of home made chocolate cake. Yum!

On request and for free you can tour around the factory with one of their staff members, who will explain the intricacies of the process in manufacturing of tea. A photo op in front of a "wall" of enormous sacks of tea could also add to the experience!
